    if you are deploying a new report, will you use the existing pipeline or you can create a new pipeline. I created a new separate pipeline but I was not able to access any workspace to it because the old pipepline was assigned to the existing workspace. hence I had to use the existing pipeline and I had to re-published already existing report and the new report together to the app

    • @BIConsultingPro
      @BIConsultingPro  4 месяца назад

      Thanks for your comment. Please note that we don't create new pipelines for each report; instead, we use one pipeline for an entire domain or department.
      When setting up a deployment pipeline, you must assign workspaces to it, otherwise it won't function properly.
      Before using any deployment pipeline, ensure that your reports are already published in the associated workspace. You can then move reports between workspaces using the deployment pipeline.
      Ideally, you should set up Dev, Test, and Production workspaces. Initially, publish your report to the Dev workspace. Once it's ready, use the deployment pipeline to move it from Dev to Test/Acceptance, and then to the Production workspace.
      Currently, you can create up to 10 stages in a deployment pipeline, depending on your needs.

    Hi,
    This is an excellent video on Power BI Deployment Pipelines. After watching the video I got curious and started exploring implementing Deployment Pipelines in my project.
    Couple of questions -
    1) Can we assign an existing Prod workspace to a deployment pipeline, similarly can we change a workspace to assign it to a different workspace?
    2) Can we configure dataset rules for data source as SQL Server on Amazon RDS
    Also, could you please upload a video on auto-sync of content with SharePoint, OneDrive etc. and how this feature enables version control within deployment pipelines.
    Thanks for uploading this video, very informative.

    • @BIConsultingPro
      @BIConsultingPro  3 года назад

      Hi, thanks for your comment.
      Let's start with the first question.
      1) You can assign only premium capacity based workspaces to pipelines. So, whenever you are creating a new deployment pipeline, if you have already created a Prod Workspace on Premium Capacity, you can assign it.
      2) Yes, we can add Dataset Rules for SQL Server. However, personally, I haven't tried on Amazon RDS.
      3) I'll upload a video for auto-sync.

    Can i ask you a vey basic question? What is the benefit for having a deployment pipelines over conventional way of creating workspace and publish the dashboards??

    • @BIConsultingPro
      @BIConsultingPro  3 года назад

      Well, conventionally, if you will deploy your reports or publish your reports to different environments, you won't get to know the changes you made in the report. However, once you will use deployment pipelines, it would show you the difference between new and the existing files. Then, depending on your requirements, you can proceed further or stop.

    Hi, I have gone through your videos and these are indeed amazing. I am in process of learning. And had one query. I have prepared the reports in power bi desktop from the data which is extracted from ms Excel file. I have published that report using services. However, I am unable to refresh the dashboard now. What could be the possible reason. I think it is related to gateway. Secondly. One of my important questions is once I publish the report in power bi, then the data set is also there in power bi services. So how my raw data( data in Excel at desktops) , my power bi desktop file(developed report in power bi) and data set in power bi services are related. What if I delete the file of desktop. what are the repercussion? I mean in order to update the dashboard, do we need to update the excel file first or what is the appropriate way. Thank you

    • @BIConsultingPro
      @BIConsultingPro  3 года назад +1

      Hi Kamal, thanks for your question.
      Yes, it's related to the data gateway. Since there is no link between your desktop file (MS Excel) and Power BI Service (Web), so you won't be able to refresh the data or schedule refresh.
      Secondly, the easiest solution is to put your file on SharePoint and connect from there. Then you don't need any data gateway to connect. You just need to authenticate yourself. Check this video:
      ruclips.net/video/xaPOoBUqeYs/видео.html
      Also, you can put your file on OneDerive if you don't have SharePoint access.
      Now, let me answer, another part of your question.
      Once you import data in Power BI, then you have your data extract in Power BI. Data would always be in Power BI and you can create reports etc. However, if you are on Power BI Desktop and the file is also on your desktop or cloud, you can go to "Data Transform Tab" and can make changes using Power Query/Power Pivot. If you would make any change in the excel file and refresh the data in Power BI, changes would reflect, if you would delete the file, you won't be able to refresh the data or make any changes as now the File doesn't exist. Similarly, if your file is on the cloud (like SharePoint or OneDerive), you can refresh the data after entering your credential on Power BI Service but if you will delete the file, data would be there which you loaded initially but you won't be able to make any data refresh as refresh would get fail.

    • @BIConsultingPro
      @BIConsultingPro  3 года назад

      Well, When you deploy content from one pipeline stage to another, the copied content contains the following Power BI items:
      Datasets
      Reports
      Dashboards
      Paginated reports
      You cannot deploy them separately.

    • @BIConsultingPro
      @BIConsultingPro  3 года назад

      However, you can separate your dataset and report and then can do the deployment. Note the following:
      The first thing that I want to mention it is always recommended to separate the dataset and report.
      You might be thinking why the separation?
      Some of the reasons are:
      People curating and updating the dataset can do this independently.
      People creating reports and dashboards can create this independently.
      Quicker and easier deployment of changes to datasets without affecting the reports.
      Reports can be updated without having to rely on dataset updates.

    I have a report that is connected to a shared dataset in the workspace, but when I deploy the report forwards it stays connected to the dataset in the development workspace. This causes permissions and view issues because the people who have access to the production workspace don't have access to the development workspace. I've seen others use parameters for having reports connect to different DBs across the stages but how does it work with datasets?

      Please watch again. These are to deploy code between different environments. The first code should be developed in DEV, then for testing, it goes to Test Environment, and finally, if it's good, it goes to the production environment. Deployment pipelines makes this process easy, and you can find the difference between different environment codes or files before deploying.
