Using Plastilina to Make Fairings (Ep85)

I'm using a different method of getting the molds I need to make the fairings for the tail end of the Super Duty kitplane. Instead of putty and bond, I'm using a clay called Plastilina. I'm no expert with this stuff but I'll show you how I shaped and formed it to make the molds for the fairings.

Sculptex makes a plastilina that comes in soft, medium, and hard. I use the medium for claying up two-part silicone or plaster molds. I think the soft clay would be easy to work in place on the aircraft, but it might be too soft to hold up if the resin gets warm as it cures. You can also mix the soft and medium to get an in- between consistency. I get the Sculptex online from Reynolds Advanced Materials.

For small pieces and detail work, I heat a wad of the medium plastilina in the workshop microwave for about 20 seconds. Then I can shape it easily, and it holds the shape well when it cools back down.

Hi, we used to use plastercine which by memory was a petrolium jelly & talc based version, I think plastalina is a vegetable oil based version. We would warm it up to soften it, then use heated spoons to almost/slighty melt the surface to get a smooth finish. a quick spray of silicone or WD40 helped to stop the pick-upWe layed up straight on the plastercine & didn't need tape or anything. When we joined 2 split-mould pieces, we used plastercine to blend the joint. When the split mould gave us a 90 degree join, we had ball bearings brazed to short rods (as handles) to run along the joint.

I just watch the cruiser dorsal fin fairing video the other day and thought that there must be some way to do this with a clay. Looks like I'm about to find out! Great content!

Well don't leave yet! Len is at the point of installing placards and stickers (custom made by AircraftStickers.com) and is just about ready for his FAA inspection. He also does his Velocity transition training this in June. So we are hoping for a first flight in July.

Hi, great progress on your SD and great videos. When using this modelling clay, one more way of making smooth lines is using various sizes of ball bearing to roll on in the sheets. It gives you a continued smooth curve. Greeting from Christchurch , New Zealand

Do you think that you could use a playdough or cake icing extruder to get shapes to help in this method. I see playdough extruders for 18$. Lots of shapes. Maybe out of the oven its easy enough to form?

Sorry to bother you, but do you need to let the "Plasterlina" dry (minutes/hours) before applying the electrical tape?

I don't think so. I didn't notice the plastalina getting any harder or dryer as time went on.
