To get those nice rounded medieval cartridge pleats in lighter fabrics, feed a pencil down each channel before drawing up the gathering stitch, Once you've got them just so, tie them off, pull out the pencils and stuff with a little wool (or broadcloth offcut sausages) tacked in place to help them keep their shape. I like the taffeta lining, it gives this houppelande the sound of hidden, rustling scales, very fitting for Maleficent.
This video made me smile. I and some of my friends are a part of the SCA ((society of Creative Anachronism). This group does reenactment from Elizabethan back as far as people want to go. But then you made this beautiful video and a beautiful houppelande and reminded me of my dreams that I now am able to fulfil! So thank you for your work and for inspiring people!

Read the Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munch. The princess saved herself! My father was horrified when he read it!!! Also you know when they become adults they will be strong willed independent people who don’t take crap from anyone or advice from their parents! I can’t even complain about it as I raised her that way!! Though when she was looking at a house with asbestos in it and talking about doing the removal herself like that’s a good idea. And telling me she’s an engineer like I don’t know. I bit my tongue a lot!!! Fortunately she ended up buying a different house with a lot less problems!!
That purple is so perfect, it more than makes up for the magenta kirtle in the film. That would have taken away from the richness of the purple I think. Just absolutely stunning 💜

Disney gave us other strong non-white female non-villains throughout the 90s, but honestly none of them were quite so badass... Esmeralda is my close second.
Edit to clarify: I *personally feel* like prior to this point, all of the "strong" female characters are the villains or antagonists.
I saw dagging and I clicked I don't even know what we're doing, I am EXCITED.
I yelled when i saw those sleeves. So magical, i want everything to have that dagging!
Really beautiful, I love that you opted for this dramatic historical sleeve design ! Not super sure about the belt though, what I've usually seen is either leather or really thick wool, and usually in a contrasting colour to the houppelande. But I'm not specialist of that era !
I can’t tell you how happy this made my little medieval heart. So so so beautiful and unmistakably Maleficent! Such a good job on this project and video!
OMG Nicole that is magnificent! The flash of purple is everything. And you look incredible in it too!
I click the thumbs-up on all of Nicole's videos even before the intro even finishes, because I mean... it's inevitable so why wait?
Beautiful. And I must say that I love the sound of the silk taffeta when you were working with it.
This is absolutely STUNNING! Maleficent has always been on my list of characters to cosplay, and this is such an inspiration.
Same!!
Love this! Would love to see you do Evil Queen as well :D So many get EQ and Maleficent confused/mistook for each other.
Nicole, this project was fantastic! And may I add that it looks incredibly beautiful on you.
First the Ertè coat, now historically accurate Maleficent! You're making my fangirl heart sing! Maleficent is my favorite Disney villain by far. Looking forward to next week's video! Thank you for sharing your talents with us!
On my third viewing
1) to listen as I clean my craft area
2) watch so I can see what you’re doing/showing
3) to absorb all the info/history
This is so awesome! Reminds me of the Arnolfini episode of "A Stitch in Time."
Hi,love the way you choose to be an anti-princess, the costume is stunning and so very majestic.
Every part of this is so elegant and incredible! I absolutely love the dagging and that shade of purple!
If I might make a recommendation to anyone interested in listening to the older Sleeping Beauty stories on youtube, A Bit Late and A Bit Frank does ASMR 'bedtime stories'. You can hear Talia and the Moon, and other iterations on her channels. She is so great!!!
Music teacher 🤌🏻 (Chef’s kiss) of approval for the music choices again, especially during the reveal. 💯
Perfect character!!!
She’s my favorite villain.
I’m loving the historical Disney.
My favorite villain ever. Her posture is amazing.
I’m not seeing any comments regarding the concept art; if there are some, apologies for the repetition. If I recall correctly, Marc Davis did the concept art for Maleficent, and he was all about drawing inspiration from history. In several of the bonus feature interviews, he mentions that the historical accuracy is whimsically similar. I love this cosplay so much and Sleeping Beauty is my all time favorite Disney animated piece!!!!
oh that sleeve design is incredible!!!!! absolutely gorgeous, and still reminiscent of Maleficent's outfit
absolutely stunning
Oooh, I love this. It looks incredible, that purple taffeta and the pleating! Beautiful job! 🖤💜🖤
i love hearing you work along with your soothing voice / background music
I'm so excited for this project!! I need to learn how to make a houppelande for my SCA persona.
One of the BEST Maleficent Cosplays ever!! She's my favorite Fairytale & Disney Villain!!!!
Can I just say, seeing all the hair/lint on the wool as you worked with it made me feel better about my life. Nothing in my house is safe from pet hair
I'm just gonna sit here and fan girl over how kick ass a historically accurate Maleficent! 🤯💙🙀👏🏽Those sleeve are giving me life!!!
Lovely, just lovely! The drama, the sleeves, the coziness!
I ended up with a whole bunch of SCA books around 14 years old and read them EXTENSIVELY; I've always wanted a houppelande. I'll file your tips into that corner of my brain.
I'm new to sewing, and I am fascinated by how you anchored your gathering stitches with a pin. I will be trying this at home. Mind. Blown.
Dagging is such a beautiful technique, and I love the way you trimmed the lining together. Beautiful!!!
Talent and speed! Beyond impressed and this costume turned out Fantastic! Absolutely love it 😍
Oh my gosh. I am stunned!!! This is so beautiful!! Sleeping Beauty is my favorite Disney movie, so to see Maleficent come to life is so cool!! Thank you🖤💜
Really loved the deep dive into the history of the story and character!
Love this. Really interesting to hear about the history of the outfit and the style that would have been worn. Absolutely fabulous! Thankyou for doing all that research and for sharing this with us.
The word that comes to mind for me looking at the historical representations is "sumptuous" and I definitely think that's appropriate for Maleficent! Really stunning work!!
Wow, what an ensemble!! This beautiful, dramatic thing was well worth all the research - fantastic work! ✨
headpiece would make it even better
Be still my beating heart! I'm in awe!
Sooooo I'm doing medieval reenactment almost for 10 years now. And first thing that I dreamed of sewing when I started doing reenactment of course was a massive silk or at least wool houppelande. But of course at the time it was too expensive for me. Now that years have passed, I've noticed that I still don't have a houppelande that I want in my medieval wardrobe. But then you made this beautiful video and a beautiful houppelande and reminded me of my dreams that I now am able to fulfil! So thank you for your work and for inspiring people!
Houpe-houpe-horray! As a beginner early-15th century-reenactor I am so delighted by your project
maleficent has always been my favorite disney character! as someone with no knowledge of historical fashion i’m surprised her outfit is so accurate. the houppelande looks amazing and i love the sleeves 💜
Evil aside, that is a wonderfully modest garment 💜
I love it but now you need to make the hat!!!! You are certainly talented enough. I have been sewing for 50 years and I can’t image hand sewing this type of project. It’s gorgeous.
Those sleeves are a true masterpiece!
This is so beautiful! I got goosebumps watching the final result!
*looks up from his crochet
Was that.... "46 hours per sleeve" or "4 to 6?"
I legit had to rewind and turn the captions on...
Also, I told my daughter to not be a princess, princesses always need rescuing from dragons... I told her to be a dragon :)
Maleficent is certainly a dragon....
4-6 hours per sleeve.
I can't wait to see the final product! This thing is already deeply intimidating.
That purple is so perfect, it more than makes up for the magenta kirtle in the film. That would have taken away from the richness of the purple I think. Just absolutely stunning 💜
Where on earth do you keep all these amazing creations?! I have enough trouble accommodating my winter coats, can’t begin to imagine how much wardrobe space malificent takes up.
That purple silk is gorgeous.... This is lovely. Thank you for sharing it.
Stunning as always, but, like... MORE. I am here for Nicole, Queen of the Goths
OMG...that purple silk is so luscious! I cant wait for the headpiece reveal.
This is the coolest thing I've ever seen!!! Maleficent is my favourite character, I can't wait to see the whole reveal. Love your channel!
What a dramatic garment! I love it.
My first thought when you said this was that episode of A Stitch in Time, with the Van Eyck painting. I'm so here for all of this, and I can't wait to see what you do with the headpiece.
I loved that one! How they used the linen to set those pleats was just brilliant.
