- Watch Bryan put together a spicer ds 404. This video just kind of highlights the assembly process of these units. For those that don’t know this is a differential out of a semi truck. This particular differential came out of a 379 Peterbuilt. As with tradition this repair is done in house @etrtruckcenterenginedrivet8918

If the pinion bearing preload is so loose that you have to hold it with a pry bar to check backlash and drag it by hand to squeeze out pattern grease, then it is to loose. Preload is critical to the life of the unit. Also double check the ring gear runout by putting dial indicator on smooth back surface of ring gear, turn. Max allowed is .008" on the 404 if too much runout, unbolt diff cases, rotate 180° reassemble. It's a quality of manufacturing issue. Most good mechanics can build a rear that works but industry experience builds a better unit

Nice video. The audio is difficult to hear . This man has obviously built lots of these. I've changed alot of these units but never went any further than the power divider. Glad to see the rest of it.

I really enjoyed this video, ive only redone maybe 3 or 4 diffs ,so the little tips and tricks help. Ill keep them in mind on the next one i do. I thought i was the only one that called anaerobic gasket maker grape jelly lol. Man i love that stuff.

One of our trucks international with old n400 with one locker with 3.91 gears front drive had me puzzled never seen this before as it was going down the road was smoking driver side front drive tires thought it was a brake issue but was not the case could you explain that to me please looks like it broke something in the differential itself as in the sand it was turning different rotation than the rear
Thank you sir! Question: if you wanted to, could you have changed your gear ratio while you're there? Or, is it true that your truck, being a 6x4, would require the back axle be taken off and that whole ratio change be done on that one, too?
Yes sir you have to change the ring gear and pinion on both differentials to swap gear ratios. If you only change one you’re gonna make big problems with both diffs really quick.
