- Watch me disassemble a customers Eaton fuller rtlo18918 back box. This customer was complaining of hearing a grinding sound once he flipped from low to high. In the video you can see what it takes to disassemble the auxiliary section of the transmission. I don’t know if you can tell in the video but this auxiliary section was extremely hot. This is only a tear down video leave me a comment I’f you would like to see how an 18 speed back box is built

Thank you very much for watching

Holy cow, think this guy has taken a few of these apart ? I bet he puts it back together just as quick.
Interesting video. Looks like you do this on a regular basis as you know exactly where to look for the problem. Try cleaning up the shop as a clean shop goes a long way in inspiring confidence in what you do. Thanks for sharing
Thank you for watching we do a lot of these. We keep our tables clean during assembly
Really enjoy the videos. I would assume that you could extend the life of the synchro's by going to neutral and back in gear with every split vs leaving it in gear for a split?
Nicely done 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Nice work man, im currently doing one of this but in my case it was grinding from high to low ( low synchro went out, brake material wore out)... You seen like youve been doing this for a while... Im putting all new bearings in and also rebuilding the air cylinders, new synchros and maybe a balance shaft as one of them looks like its got a tiny crack or scratch i will have to look deeper, any recommendations on where to buy a rebuilt kit that would include most of the parts I need?
thanks for the video again
keep up the good work
Good luck putting that yolk nut back on now after striking the shaft with that steel hammer
And they have pullers for those yolks too, you also use them changing hanger bearings on semi's
Man just shut up smh, I've seen yolks with fine splined treading seized on by rust that had to be beat off by a sledge hammer, didn't work and the yolk had to be cut off with a gas torch nothing happened a new nut fit right on this isn't aluminum it's not as weak and delicate as you think it is, you probably just have soft hands brother!
My dad is a gearbox mechanic in Jamaica these almost always have to be forced off with a hammer I bet your the same type of guy who thinks gears need to be "prelubed" during installation
@@_jonny_wiz_ whatever you say buddy
From the looks of it he is putting a rebuild kit in this thing....shaft included. Just a thought
does a meritior 10 speed come apart the same way? thats the same thing wrong with my dads truck.. but his kicks it out of gear in high range.if not do you have a video for the meritior 10 speed? thanks
Is the shaft for the splitter with the fork on it aupposed to turn or not turn? When i tried to take the 3/4 nut off of mine to do o rings because it was leaking and wouldnt split, it just turns and i cant get the nut off. Just trying to find out if the shift fork is welded or pinned on the other end...
I have an 18 speed that grinds and will pop out at the highest/last gear (18 gear?). Shifting through all the other gears are fine. Does this sound like a synchro or something else? Do I have to remove whole trans or maybe just back half? Thank you
What would cause grinding between splits on a 13? For example 5h to 6l. Normal range shifts just fine only when splitting the rpm’s drop way too fast to catch next gear while splitting up. Downshifts fine. Thanks!
If your bearing covers leak can you simply just replace the gasket, would i need to drain the transmission before changing ?
thanks for the video, im thinking this might be my problem, I already changed out the external parts, and it didnt fix my problem, and the air pressure is good. do you have to drop the entire trans to get the back box off?
No sir you can pull the back box without dropping the transmission. Just make shure your timing is correct when you assemble and make “absolutely shure” you have some countershaft straps on when you mate it to the front case.
@@etrtruckcenterenginedrivet8918 ah perfect, ill let you know how it goes. thanks!!
Same problem I'm having with a 13 speed. Transmission grinding from low to high.
Check out our little video on how to repair a 13 speed back box if you haven’t allready

So my 13speed grinds when I shift from high to low. It basically won't hold it in low range when selected. Its worse in the morning and gradually starts working fine once the tranny and truck get hotter. Whats my issue you think? What can I replace or check without removing the entire tranny? Thx 🙏
Can you make a video on how to convert 13 speed transmission to a 18 speed transmission
The PULLER point goes in that center hole on the primary shaft, and bolts to the u-bolt's holes. I would have gotten drawn and quartered if I used a hammer when if our shop or someone in our shop had THE TOOL to remove or install.
😏
Can u take the Tran top plate off while still in the truck through the access plate in the floor
Some trucks have enough space to remove the top plate while the transmission is still bolted up. We don’t recommend doing it that way. The risk of misalignment or dropping foreign debris down into the transmission is very high.
What if it only grinds when you Preselect the range before pulling it out of gear? Like the shifting placard tells you to do.
If you switch range while in between gears it's fine. No grinding.
can that be done without removing the transmission??
Ouch those poor threads on that output shaft!!!!

I would appreciate seeing the build up if you have the time to do the vid. Thanks for the knowledge. I truely appreciate it.
Yessir
Btw in the meantime we have a video on a 13 speed back box repair that is very close to the same thing thanks for the comment btw
What problem causes noising same gears
What gear position are you experiencing noise and kinda describe the sound if you can
That looks like some complicated shidddd lol 😂
It is
Hello! Got a problem with eaton fuller 18 speed. When cold shifting ok, but when driving around 30km, warming up transmission sturt to shifting very hard. What could be a problem? Thank you
Tell me what you mean by shifting. Do you mean every time you hit the splitter button on the shift knob or do you mean every time you move the stick into a gear position
Hi, no, when move stick into a gear, but only when transmission is warm. It's hard to shift down (move stick) and when completely stopped i push clutch but stick wount go into a gear, have to play lots of power on stick.
Sounds kinda like a clutch issue
But why when cold work good like new but after 30-40km driving when taking exit and shifting down stick go into gear too hard, and when stopped and want to speed up same thing stick go into gear too hard.....
Even if use double clutch not help..
How can I get ahold of you
Hey man I hate to inform you but we sold out and are no longer working on trucks. If your needing to get your truck transmission repaired I would call Richard kerns truck parts up in Ellenwood ga that’s were all three of us used to work they will do you a good job
Good way to brake ya wrist 😆
Would hate to know any part of what I did in this video broke one of my wrists
Nobody will ever answer these questions.
But if it grinds like this after a rebuild then it means your shop cut corners on replacement parts??
And they robbed you?
I’m sure there are shops out there in the world that would say they have done the work but have actually never done anything at all to your truck. If they did work on the transmission are they competent enough to know what to fix or are they just pretending to know? Now as for the parts me personally I don’t care about aftermarket or genuine in my experience the aftermarket gearing is just as good as the genuine. Aftermarket or genuine there all made in china,India,Spain,Italy or Mexico.
As a 40 yr builder and owner of a rebuild shop the action in this video does not represent the quality of the rest of us in the business!!! We have much more efficient and professional methods of repair or rebuilding than shown..
