      One of my favorite fights for SOOO many reasons is Aragorn vs Lurtz (the Uruk-hai captain at the end of The Fellowship of the Ring). I think this is a great example of a toss up. Yes Aragorn is a beat but he is kind of fighting on his heals for most of it and just narrowly wins, and he does it without a deus ex machina. The fight has a lot of tension and the scene as a whole characterizes Aragorn as a fearless protector and highly capable warrior. The desperation you see in Aragorn in the fight also makes you think “oh… that was just one Uruk-hai… and Saruman has (at least) tens of thousands of them…”

    The ending fight of FMA:B vs Father is also thematically perfect because the entire fight is demonstrating the conflict between the ideas of people as a tool for power and power as a tool for people. It's so perfect for the show that has been exploring power and the responsibility and danger of it. Major SPOILERS, obviously.
    Al sacrificing himself to give Ed a fighting chance, followed by Ed sacrificing his power to get his brother back is a direct antithesis of Father's ambition, who represents basically every warlord, king, dictator, politician, corporate executive, etc.
    Father sacrifices entire nations to fuel his ambition. To Father, humanity is literally just a fuel for power to achieve his goals.
    Meanwhile, Ed sacrifices his power to save just one person after defeating Father. It's so beautiful, and such a perfect tie-in of the brother's driving motivation to the main overarching plot. Arakawa created such a masterpiece with Fullmetal Alchemist.

      Yes, it is. Many people have never seen a slingshot in their lives and don't realize how dangerous it is. A lead bullet fired from it carries about as much kinetic energy as a bullet fired from a Glock pistol. And although the slingshot bullets are heavier and not so aerodynamic, they retain a monstrous killing power at a distance of up to 100 meters. And when I say “monstrous” I mean that a hit of such a bullet in the arm, for example, can lead to a broken bone, and a hit in the head ends with a fractured skull.
      Of course the story of weak David against huge Goliath is a textbook example of an underdog, but in modern conditions it will be a RUclips video like “Mr. Beast: I'm fighting against Conor McGregor, but I have a gun with me”. Doesn't sound all that impressive, does it?

Before that, I'd say it was 9/10, really loved season 3, but 1 and 2 were amazing as well. Compared to FMA, I'd say it's comparing an ant to a Colossal Titan. FMA is it. I think easily the best David vs Goliath fight is the season 1 finale of Invincible. Upon first look most people will say Omni-Man won because he defeats Invincible but defeating isn’t the same winning.
    If we look at the character’s goal, Omni-Man’s aim is to convince Mark he’s right and subjugate earth under Viltrum’s rule. Mark’s goal is to get through to his dad and protect earth. And in the end despite Omni-Man being clearly stronger, Invincible achieved his goal, and Omni-Man doesn’t. Invincible wins the fight

    I love this video! Another thing that I think is really good with David versus Goliath fights, sometimes the goal is just destroying the opponent's win condition. Like in Puss in boots, it's possible that death could just keep fighting him forever, he's pretty much a spirit or a concept or something. He would wear puss out eventually. But like you said when he doesn't "see" puss anymore, he loses his win condition. All characters whether they're heroes or villains, are slaves to their motivations.

    Fantastic analysis, love the breaking down of strategy into the 5 s's.
    In regards to Puss 'n Boots, I'd argue his entire strategy would fall under synergy and not sacrifice. Sure, he was giving up his wish, but he wasn't doing that to defeat death, he was doing it because he didn't need it anymore. As you mentioned, when he was at his lowest point in the fight, disarmed, disrobed, and afraid, he put all his faith into the smallest bit of love, and that was more than enough to start to fight back. At that point, he was no longer living to escape death, but to share in love with others. Synergy!

    • @maxtube1952
      @maxtube1952 Месяц назад +5

      It isn't his Wish he was sacrificing, he explicitly says he sacrificed his ego(and also, his way of approaching the world and his adventures). Synergy is helping in the moment, and that doesn't factor in motivation. Yes, Kitty and Perrito were his motivation, but that's not synergy, that's...unrelated. As mentioned, Death cuts off any access to Stealth(Sneak Attack), Environmental factors(Surroundings), and, of course, assistance from others with that flame ring. And assistance from others is what Synergy is - and nothing else.

      One of the battles was against this earthbending dwarf I swooped from a book, and four giant statues (which I changed the weapon they wielded each to match one of the four elements). Another one was a "siege" in a shelter against elven warlocks in an abadoned mine. Another one had a mystical archer atop of a tower than would shoot everyone he could see every turn, but at the ground there was a mystical knight hunting everyone taking cover. Weird mechanical being that would imprison spellcasters in its pocket dimension, forcing PCs and NPCs alike to work without communication from the otherside (since the battle still occured inside the dimension).
      My players said their favorite battle (up to that point) was against a plant-mask monster that at certain HP thresholds the masks would drop turning into smaller versions of that monster, though.
      And after all of that I still heard that the combat was the least interesting part of the game with some players completely losing their focus when a battle started.

It includes Synergy (between the teens as well as between Hiccup and Toothless), Spot of Weakness (as you described in the video), as well as both Surroundings _and_ Sneak Attack (since the attack in the clouds surrounding the Red Death is literally Hiccup and Toothless using the clouds as cover to perform a series of sneak attacks).
    The only thing that's really missing is Sacrifice as a strategy. I think some people may claim that Hiccup losing his leg counts as a sacrifice, but I don't think I'd count it since it wasn't his intention to lose his leg (or his life), even if he was willing to.
    I look forward to all your future videos!

      True. But from a story structure standpoint they'd been leaning on that the entire film, they had to do something to mix that up if they wanted a proper finale. (And they did use it in part, it just wasn't decisive.)

    You can refer to Sneak Attacks as Surprise Attacks. For instance, the fight between Shikamaru vs Temari in Naruto.
    Shikamaru is aware that he cannot beat Temari in terms of the power department.
    That's why the only way he could beat Temari is to exploit her *Spot* *of* *Weakness* , catching her with his Shadow Possession Jutsu.
    Of course Temari is aware of this and does everything she could not to fall for that, such as measuring the limit of where his Jutsu can reach.
    This is where Shikamaru had to use the tools at his disposal along with the *Surroundings* to ensure his path to victory is guaranteed. Waiting so that the arena wall's shadow gets bigger and creating a shadow using his jacket as a parachute so that he could extend his jutsu.
    Then we get the *Surprise* *Attack* ; Temari was so focused on the threat in front of him that she didn't even realize she fell for a trap. Shikamaru lured her near one end of the underground tunnel that Naruto dug through in an earlier match to finally catch her with his jutsu.

    • @Sorain1
      @Sorain1 18 дней назад

      Solid example that one. Continuity is part of the Surroundings after all.

    One of my favorite David vs. Goliath fight is the Impel Down Prisoners vs. Magellan from One Piece. At this point in the story, Magellan is a completely unstoppable beast and the win condition is just escaping. The final confrontation of Magellan chasing everyone from floor 6 to floor 1 has one first major win condition, they need to hold of Magellan for long enough to give Jimbe and Crocodile (and Buggy) enough time to steal a ship and help save everyone else. There is synergy as Magellan is coated in an extremely powerful venom so Luffy can’t touch him. This leads Galdino to help by giving him was armor to let Luffy hit him. This is only a temporary solution as the wax will eventually melt to the venom but it gives more time to stall. Galdino’s wax also makes a wall to hold him back a bit longer. Jimbe and Crocodile return with the ship and are ready to help everyone out of the prison. Then comes the second major obstacle. Impel Down is a major branch of the government considering it is the strongest prison in the world. It is surround by impassable gates that only the control room can open so while the Prisoners got to the ship, they can’t truly leave. But someone had thought of that. Bon Clay is extremely loyal to Luffy despite not being part of his crew. His power allows him to transform into anyone whose face he touches. The gates suddenly open and everyone is confused what happened. We cut to a scene of Magellan in the control room telling them to open the gates when suddenly Magellan bursts in. Bon Clay was disguised as Magellan and had the guards open the gates. He is sacrificing himself knowing there is no escaping for him, but he guarantees everyone else escape. Magellan asks him for his final words and then we cut back to Luffy crying as he is finding out what is happening. The Prisoners escape Impel Down.

      @butter_0021 6 дней назад +1

      And then Blackbeard returns, beats Magellan to a pulp with his new crew of the strongest prisoners from the prison and Bon Clay apparently survives because Oda hates killing off characters outside of flashbacks. God damn it Oda.

    One of my favorite movies of all time is Akira Kurosawa's Ran, which features both a flyswatting battle and a David v. Goliath battle, both of which are executed to perfection. During the flyswatting battle - the attack on the castle, the outcome is never in doubt. Instead, it's all about exploring the relationship between the brothers and showcasing their father's descent into madness, which is a huge plot point in the film. During the final battle, the weaker forces uses strategy, including surroundings and sneak attack, to ambush the superior samurai cavalry with gun equipped troops hidden in the surrounding woods. Moreover, it turns out that the entire final battle is a distraction to draw the attacking army out of the castle so it could be sacks by another force allied with the defenders (sacrifice and synergy).

    My favourite David vs Goliath fight is Ninjago Season 9 Lloyd vs Garmadon. Specifically that one, and not the other battle where they are fighting a literal colossus.
    The win condition was set up beautifully with a call back to season 3- the art of the silent fist, to win without landing a single blow. It was the fight that fueled Garmadon, who survived being encased in lava by the mother of dragons, who seemed so unstoppable until Lloyd realised the win condition. To not fight back, but to resist.
    There was definitely synergy in the first half with the dragon, Wu, and Lloyd. I believe the weak spot would be the win condition, and maybe even surroundings were used.
    Speaking of, the Oni Trilogy (Seasons 8-10) also contains more fascinating fights like another David vs Goliath with the win condition being to get the baby to safety. There’s even more out there so if you had a chance to make another sort of video I would love to see Ninjago receive the recognition it deserves.
