  • In this video I walk you through a typical day in my life as an artist with a day job. Life as a working artist is not always easy. Being an artist with a day job requires constantly balancing priorities and commitments between my art and my day job. If you are an artist with a day job as well, I hope seeing a typical day in my life resonates with you and gives you inspiration to push through the difficult days! Also if you are an aspiring artist, I hope seeing a day in my life as an artist with a day job can give you ideas about how to schedule your time to fit in more art into your daily life.

    We love the positivity in every part of this story! The organization and discipline is something we can all learn from, but maybe the most important thing here is what we don't see: Christina never questions whether she can give herself permission to devote time to painting. We'd love to hear this artist talk about self-direction and believing in our own choices, because that's something a lot of us need to learn!

      @christinakentart  Год назад +2

      Thanks so much! Believing in oneself, that's a big topic. Hard to cover in a talk! But I think it comes down to a word you mention, "devotion." When you are devoted to something, you don't ask for permission to be with it. You are driven by love to make time and space for it. And through this love, we can connect with something greater than ourselves. I think this is as essential component human thriving ❤️

    Thanks for sharing this. I've recently discovered your work and it is helpful and inspiring to watch your videos and check out your exhibits. I admire your early morning discipline but I am a night owl, so on the 2 or 3 days a week I get to paint I like to start right after a late breakfast and paint into the late afternoon. Keep going, I can tell you are going to go far!

    Ah, the joys of early mornings. Growing up I could never understand why my folks would get up so early, even on weekends....now I know. In my 20's, a long time ago, I used to love to see the sun come up....just before I went to bed. Now days, I am normally getting up at a time I used to come home.....lol. And being an early riser is even better if you work from home.....I love it.
    Do you find that because you paint in the morning, that painting problems get to percolate in your sub-conscious all day while you are working, and that you find you have the answer in the morning?

      Haha I love that. I feel like a grandma when my friends are going out and I'm in bed at 10pm, but it really is worth it.
      To your question about the problems getting solved in my subconscious during the day... I'm not sure. I think it's definitely possible, because I will often look at a work in progress during the day, just staring at it in between work, not exactly even thinking much at all. I have also found in the early mornings, my inner critic tends to be a lot quieter. I think it doesn't wake up until around 8am 😂

    getting up early to pursue our passions is a superpower! I get up at 5:20 am every morning to knit and prep a painting sketchbook before I go to my full-time job (where I don't work at home) -- 6km cycle or bus in the winter. So many artists say they "don't have time" to do their art but it's just that they don't prioritize it. Even doing art for 20 - 30 minutes a day gets you farther along in the creative journey.

    I too, am an artist with a day job where I can't always work from home, so I do something similar to you where I get up super early (around 5am), get ready for work, and then do my art until about 6:30 - 6:40 am so I can catch the bus to work. I start my day job at 8am so it works for me :) Sometimes I still have energy in the evening after gym and dinner so I will go back to my art at that time as well until bed time

    A great way that works for you. I decided to make sure every day I do some art, whether that be a painting or a sketche, if time is an issue, that helps keep my art journey moving forward. Although I am not at work, because of health issues, I do care for someone and grow my own food as well as doing a few other thing's. Mornings are not the best for me, so what I did find helpful, was making an area as my art space, where everything is to hand. Making it easier to start, means I can have time and get painting within minutes. I found that when I am tired, its not the art making thats the issue, its if I have to spend time setting up, I then sometimes would find myself not doing it. Now it is so different, I go to my area in a bay window with everything within reach, and just paint straight away. The tiredness goes as I'm soon in the flow. Everyone is different, of course. All the best, John, south of England

    Your view! Your coffee table!! (Where did you get that?). I am in SoCal but we have a very similar schedule. I work from home and struggle to find time to paint. Enjoyed this vlog. I also love your painting style. The simplicity is amazing. I hope you keep up with these videos.
    Edit to add: I also have two tuxedo cats and that same rice maker. 😊.

      haha we are twins! Thank you :) The view is my absolute favorite thing about my apartment, and one of the reasons why I keep a home studio rather than renting a studio space! Also the coffee table is a favorite piece of furniture (we got it used, but the brand is West Elm). We live in a tiny apartment, so having multi-functional furniture is a huge plus.
      Good luck with your painting practice! It is hard to find the time, but totally worth it! :)
