I also hate painting the sides of the canvas. These paintings are absolutely stunning, good luck with your show!

Wow absolutely stunning. I remember that only about a year back (?) you said in one of your videos that it was your plan to start drawing big paintings next year.I think that you said you wanted to paint five paintings? And look where you are now!! You have a solo show coming up with mostly large paintings. Christina, this is absolutely impressive and you can be so proud of yourself. 😮❤❤❤

Thanks Annek! Yeah, I saw a friend's show full of large paintings and I loved the impact they had. I thought to myself, if he can do it, so can I! Super happy with how they turned out, and I'm glad you like them too! ❤

Congratulations!! You've made beautiful large paintings. You're right about how framing can be expensive😮

Just even seeing a few of these paintings here is making me really want to paint because in those paintings i realize you and i see the world in quite a similar way at least in certain ways. as far as perspective and composition goes, i think our eyes are close in that way. This makes me think that i should really pick up that brush. You really are amazing at what you do. You deserve all the good that comes to you. i myself want to do realism, but i keep finding myself drawn to your impressionism. I hope this show goes amazingly well. I wish I could go.

You can dry oil faster with a heat gun or use liquin instead of oil as a thinner. But heat gun definitely helps speed things up if you don’t want to use alkyds. Just be careful it can actually make paper catch fire of held there long enough haha

Oh interesting, I haven't heard that before about the heat gun! Maybe I'll try that (carefully) the next time I'm in a pinch...

Congrats on the show. All the pieces you showed looked great. I really like seeing the larger works.
So what was the biggest challenge of scaling up your work, other than just painting time. Did doing larger work change how you composed your paintings?

    • @christinakentart

Thanks so much, Doug! And great question. I'll elaborate on this more in future videos, but the main thing was that I started adding an intermediate stage where I cover the whole canvas in thinned-down color for each major shape at the beginning to get a sense of how the color shapes work together as a whole. That, and I feel like with my larger paintings I'm stuck in the "messy middle" for much longer. It's a bit of a mind game, and I must remain faithful that it will work out in the end!

Congratulations on your first solo show :) I love your work, and find your videos insightful and inspiring. I'm so happy to see the dates of your show align with when I'll be in Vacaville visiting my sister (a short drive from Davis). I plan to visit the gallery then, and am excited to be able to see some of your paintings up close!

Sorry if you answered these questions elsewhere. If you were self taught, how many years had you been painting before you did a solo show? How did you select your theme, was it more from the gallery side or your vision? Did you write in a proposal?

Wow!! Davis!! I remember a fateful trip I took to the Sac area back in 1987. I was job-hunting there, waiting to hear back from a few prospects, and staying on couches in Sac, Davis and Dixon. I'd be willing to bet I walked down that same street where your gallery is now. Great video of your process. Your exhibit pics remind me of Hopper, minus the trademarked Hopper bleakness. Your human subjects look pretty engaged with one another, and your colors and contrasts really pop!

Oh, I bet so! The gallery has been around since 1975, although the building has changed over time. And thank you!
