Arkham City will always be a masterpiece.
RIP Kevin Conroy.
and Arleen Sorkin
@@HK-gm8pe Arleen didn't voice Harley Quinn in Arkham City, Tara Strong did. But yes, may she also RIP.
The Arkham series feels like a dream.
Developed by a relatively unknown studio with no correlation to any movie released around that period… turned out to be a phenomenal series with some of its games being among the best of all time.
It’s kinda depressing to see them fumble the ball so hard, if the Suicide Squad game’s early footage and recent leaks are anything to go by.
@@Invidente7 not the same developers. sheesh, watch the video. nuff said
@@RugsterClaps Maybe he's referring to Arkham Knight? "Arkham Knights" isn't a game.
The series is quite possibly the best collection of superhero games ever made. And they were so good other studios copied elements of the series gameplay: Assassin's Creed 3 to Rogue, Shadow of Mordor and The Amazing Spider-Man games all featured the same combat mechanics as the Arkham Games.
And the new Suicide Squad live service garbage game must be a nightmare
Nothing good lasts forever.
As tragic as Arleen Sorkin’s passing is, she only played Harley in Asylum. Every other Arkham game had Tara Strong as Harley.
After Arkham City, Tara’s Harley sounded more like Bubbles from the PPG than Harley.
I was actually coming to the comments to say this too...
Still the best Batman game we’ve ever had. The genuine freedom available to traverse the city, the characters, the story, the combat, and the fantastic introduction of Catwoman. Top it all off with Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill putting in amazing performances, and you’ve got, as your title says, a masterpiece of a game.
Sesión
Nuts that they couldn't just continue that in Arkham Knight.
@@pauperslament3467they did
I love all of the Arkham games, even Origins, but Arkham City takes home the gold.
I have Arkham Knight for free, but will never play that inferior game.
AC is all that's needed.
And I don't expect modern AAA gaming to make any better game.
Arkham City’s one of those games where every time I play it, I have to utter to myself under my breath “holy shit this game is amazing” about once every half hour
It's "I'm Batman." for me.
It's a damn shame how Knight has seemingly overtaken it in rank. Infuriates me how overrated that game is
@@KareemK-jl3sj Calm the hell down bro, there's no need to be upset by the opinions of others. Knight is a great game, a worthy successor to City, City is just it's own masterpiece
This is what happens when talented developers and writers have a subject they are passionate about. One of the most polished games Ive ever seen. Perfect length, plenty of variety etc.
But what about all the micro transactions and unnecessary dlc's and daily log ins? Isn't that what gamers love?
The joker fatigue was pretty real in this franchise but Mark Hamill combined with these dialogue writers is such a lethal team that I’m glad he was in so much of knight
I still think that if wb montreal had just decided to commit to black mask with maybe a joker tease at the end of origins that a lot of the backlash to his appearance in knight would’ve been less harsh but I get why they went the direction they did
Even though origins should have done something different, it was a good origin for joker and Batman’s first meeting
IMO Arkham Asylum gave us Mark Hamill's best performance as the Joker. He was finally given the freedom to pull off a darker take on the character than he was allowed in the DC Animated shows and movies. You could tell he was having fun in each cut scene and dialogue.
@@edmonddantes563Troy Baker and Roger Craig Smith were amazing as younger versions of the Joker and the Batman respectively so I'd say it was a good call.
@@edmonddantes563 Exactly. The way that was handled was great actually. But it should've been a 3rd act twist or something and not the main part of the game
To be fair, people only complained about UE3 being used when devs used that default UE3 shader that looked like fart. It made every UE3 game that used it look drab and boring, and it was a sign of dev laziness/incompetence because it was super easy to change, so much so that Epic released a free tutorial video showing devs how to change it.
Rocksteady really did show every other developer how to use UE3. I can't think of any games that did it better. The fact that Arkham Knight is UE3 and still holds up today graphically is incredible.
Oh nonono, unreal engine WAS GARBAGE. you could spot it from a mile away by just the bugs and glitches and ugly textures and the art style of everyone looking like comic book characters with round heads and giant torsos and arms, as well as a poop filter, textures loading 2 seconds after you needed them and a jar of Vaseline smeared across everything.
Unreal engine was trash and only really good devs could make something out of it, but the games would still be very obvious UE games. And they run like shit on consoles.
Like batman Arkham games, bioshock, bulletstorm (that shit runs like shit and is ugly as hell even as the PS4 remastered version on PS5), Deadpool, DmC: Donte May Cry, homefront, fable, injustice 1, lost planet 3 (compared to lost planet 1 and 2, it looks so bad), mass effect, mortal Kombat 9, Mk vs DC (Bith are so UGLY), silent hill downpour, spec ops the line (I think they even used the engine to make it as bland, ugly and generic as possible on purpose), ARK, back 4 blood, dead by daylight etc...
Games that look pretty much a generation behind and run like shit.
UE4 got a lot better towards 2018 and forward and UE5 is really good.
You can still do the classic UE tropes like necromunda hired gun, outriders, GTA trilogy, marvel vs Capcom infinite or payday 3, but you can also do gorgeous anime like guilty gear or kingdom hearts 3 or final fantasy 7 remake, realistic sim shooters like insurgency sandstorm or ground branch, realistic medieval pvp online like chivalry 2, awesome action rogue lites like returnal, kiddy platformers like crash or sackboy, good looking fighting games finally, like Tekken 8, mortal Kombat 11.
Luckily, it's not as big as people think it is. I don't like most of UE games and how they look.
My favorite will forever capcom's MT framework. All their games look beautiful and play the best with that engine, like monster hunter world, dragons dogma, devil may cry 4, re5, 6, re1 and zero hd remasters, lost planet 1 and 2, dead rising, marvel vs Capcom 3,
It would be great if I could just turn that off completely on my Xbox 360 😂😂😂
@@kato093 I see you seems to be knowledgeable guy. What would you mention as games on more modern engines, than UE3, which pure 50% of love in to their development and details as Arkham series? I probably lost track of modern games and I can notice mainly Kojima, Valve and Fromsoft titles, which feels like it. Not to mention Alien isolation, Hollow Knight.
One thing pretty noticiable to me in Arkham City is how visually good is the whole map. If i'm standing in some point, there is some colored place that makes me identify a region without pausing to see the map. The furnace region is reddish, the museum/iceberg club region is blueish, the region for the GCPD has broken streets and etc. I always like it how it loooks, i felt the designers had a great a concise idea how each region should appear. In contrast, in both Arkham Origins and Knight everything is absolutely grey, i need to keep pausing to remind what region is each.
Sorry for bad english
I would say that applies more for Origins than Knight since I've been replaying the latter recently and there's still plenty of color and unique landmarks in Gotham in that game.
I have been playing origins and it’s such a great game my only problem is that the combat is bugged since if you try to hit an enemy you actually hit an invisible wall and I know it’s small but I always would try to remain my combo and the combat alone has issues which is annoying anyways Arkham origins had a very small development time and it still a very great game.
City has a super small map its not even hard to navigate or remember where everything is already.
then again i fail to grasp how you need knights map either the regions are kind of also easy to tell apart if you’ve played it long enough
"Its the freaking bat!"
dont know how but i can hear the voice perfectly, oh man the memories with this game
One more thing about Arkham City that I think makes it special is that it's also the last game that Paul Dini worked on in the series. Dini's writing was a huge part of what made both Conroy's Batman and Hamill's Joker so great both in The Animated Series as well as the first two Arkham games, and this was the last time we had the whole trio working together on these characters and their story.
Fun fact : Pauli's diner from the opening scene is a reference to Dini
Arkham City is just timeless. Before I got the game, I played the demo easily over a dozen times. It's the overall best of the series, and with the far too early passing of Kevin Conroy, we'll never get another game like it - he will _always_ be the voice of Batman.
In my opinion this game is up there as one of the very best games of its console generation. Just phenomenal, it’s in my top 5 favorite games of all time. I know a lot of people say Arkham Knight had better combat or better graphics, but to me, it can’t top City. There is just something about Arkham City that is so pure, it’s just lightning in a bottle that I do not think any superhero game will ever recapture.
I agree. I don't know anything about Batman or any capeshit, I only saw The Dark Knight and TDKR because I was unemployed around the time they got MASSIVE hype and the Bane memery started on 4chan. I still had a grand old time, also with other BamHam clones like Mad Max and Shadow of Mordor.
The designs of each character were proof that studios weren't always hung up on pleasing the tumblr/twitter herds. Allowing for masculine male characters and feminine female characters to coexist.
Arkham Asulum was always my favorite, the encroaching atmosphere and unnerving killer croc section. I remember how excited my brother was for Arkham city. It is a successor to asylum through and through.
Ill never forget getting this game and the xbox 360 on my 10th birthday. I was a huge Batman fan and i played City and Origins for hours. Thanks for the awesome video Gman.
This game was just so well done. The atmosphere, the combat, the writing and the characters. An absolute masterpiece. So thankful to have grown up playing this series as a teenager.
I finished replaying Arkham Asylum on PS5 last night and loved every minute of it. Starting Arkham City tonight and I can't wait!
This trilogy is the best superhero game series in video games to ever exist. As much as I love the insomniac Spider-Man games they will never touch this quality. Yes SS squad is coming soon and that's a bit controversial but I liked what I played of it and it is Kevin's last performance as Batman. It hurt like a shit ton of bricks hearing he passed.
I love how not only in depth your videos are, but how damn funny they can be too. Great vid
I remember being so excited to get this for my birthday and I was not disappointed in the slightest. For the longest time this was my favorite game of all time and to this day I never get sick of revisiting it and still have fun with it.
When you hit that flow state with the combat and it's all clicking together, it's just *chef's kiss* perfection
It's crazy how banger after banger was being released during Xbox 360 and PS3 era. 😂😢
For knife counter:
1. make sure you hold the left analog stick BACK
2. time your Y/triangle pressed as you normally would, but keep it HELD DOWN for every dodge
3. repeat until final success
One of the most satisfying sounds of video game history is the "explosion" sound when you defeat some enemy in Arkham City
I met one of my best friends through Arkham City. I was hanging out with my friends from high school and we go over to their friend's house that I remember from High School too but I never hung out with him. We're in his living room and he's playing arkham city and currently in the GCPD building about to fight Freeze, he hands me the controller while he and my friends go out to smoke and I'm just blown away from the game and from there we talk about more video games and start hanging out on our own and he's been one of my best friends since!
never got notified for this, thank you for the long video Gman. love you.
Just wanted to pop by and say Merry Christmas. I saw your other post about the amount of views this video got and I definitely would have contributed to the views had I not been so busy. Just keep up the good work, you will always have fans. Your effort and talent don't go unnoticed. I think you'd have to try pretty hard to lose your fanbase. Love ya bud
Replaying now and man it never gets old
Played this game like 10+ times by now since 2011 and never get tired of it…
Was,is, and always will be a masterpiece.
Ever since I played Arkham Asylum when it first came out when I was 5 years old this has been my favorite video game series of all time. The best Batman game I had before it was Lego Batman which was fun and nostalgic now but these games took every single thing I loved about Batman and perfected it. I have always been a Batman fan from the moment I think I was able to speak so these games are extremely special to me and my favorite pieces of Batman Media period. ❤
my son beat arkham knight at 5 too. still impressed by that. as a lifelong batman fan, im so thankful this series is as good as it is too
@@RugsterClaps True. I followed Gotham Knights up to it's release and it turned out being a complete disappointment. Suicide Squad looks like it will be the same. It's sad they don't make games as well as they used to.
arkham city makes spiderman 2 look like like a ubisoft open world slop game
The whole Arkham series is a masterpiece. I remember when Arkham Knight came out people were complaining that it isnt as great as the previous parts. But I still think it is still as good as the previous parts. It provides the best overall Batman gameplay so far and adds the Batmobile.
They really should continue the Arkham series with the modern tech it would be mind blowing. But still these games look great and plays like a dream.
I got this game when I was about 9 years old, and it was just about my favorite thing ever for a year or two. Played it on an old MSI laptop at 30fps in 720p at low settings, but loved every low-poly minute.
Honestly, the entire quadrilogy is almost perfect imo. Even Origins and Knight were A tier. Hard to believe that if Insomniac’s inevitable Spider-Man 3 lands, we’ll have another superior superhero quadrilogy that matches this quality. Life is good.
"Hey, You Chickenman or Batman?"
I remember playing arkham city so much that when I did the hard mode freeze fight I actually ran out of ideas to use against him and it was just so awesome to have a boss really test you mentally
For perfect knive parry you have to hold both Y/Triangle and left stick down and with the last knive attack you let go of Y/triangle for a counter
I literally just played this game for the first time ever last week. I was blown away. I've never been a huge fan of super hero games because in my experience they were usually just button mashing beat em ups. Every aspect of this game was just amazing. The atmosphere, the cast, the combat, the story. Thanks for covering this old chestnut Gman.
Just replayed the Arkham games during Christmas break last year. Good times.
just want ya to know that your content is legendary brother. You have videos that are an event...i need dabs, snacks, and drinks for em.
Great video absolutely love it!!! I’d really love the same attention you did with this but for Arkham origins if it ever makes sense.
Love the reviews boss!
its interesting how you mention the change in the feeling of the combat in origins. it has been in fact changed a bit from city. in origins you cant rely on timing the block by the symbols on their head anymore but instead you have to time it by their body language. so if you see them about to throw a punch and block youll be fine but if you wait to block when you see the symbol above their head its already too late. idk why they did this change but coming off the other two games and then playing this one it can really throw you off
Idk if I’ve ever been able to put it into words but that perfectly explains how origins plays. Ik the development for that game was pretty scuffed but it’s weird they weren’t able to sort the combat out considering they were borrowing so many assets from city and it was on the same engine
gman always blessing me with a new video while at work.
Every year I replay the Arkham series, and while I know all the lines by heart, there's no game that makes me feel this way. Seriously, it's one of the few games where I genuinely feel the love the developers poured into it, it's so detailed and well thought out. My favorite game - varied gameplay, engrossing story, great voice acting, soundtrack, it ticks all the boxes for me!
Great video, got me excited to play AC again.
I actually agree with this, as much as I like Arkham Asylum and having a blast in free roam on Gotham with Arkham Knight, but till this day Arkham City remains as the better sequel, and the theme song is just one of those songs that keep you around on the main menu until It finishes. And that shots of Michael Keaton from Batman Returns reacting to Harley Quinn's new outfit, priceless.
Arkham City is my favorite game and I have so many memories playing this game, I played all the versions multiple times and is one of the best power fantasies of all time! Listening in a bottle, once in a life time kind of deal!
This was my introduction to batman game, was blown away by the level of detail in pretty much everything!
I LOVE the Phys-X in the Batman games. Just love that stuff. I remember not being able to run it or having to run it on normal/low on the CPU. I did have a dedicated Phys-X card for a short period of time between cards. It ran well actually. I think that feature is actually still available. Not "supported/updated" but available in the driver software. Just so cool to have the fog react to you, the bullet sparks and concrete chunks, the newspapers when you whip your cape.
2:00 lol nicely done
So glad ur talking about city, I have very vivid memories of this game from childhood and still boot it up for a play through every now and again to this day and it’s never ever soured my opinion on this game, defo one of the all time goats
Great video!
Whenever I play the Arkham Series, I make it a point not to move on to the next game until after I take down Riddler.
Usually by then I want to throw out the no-kill rule because of all those freakin trophies
While Arkham City was the best overall I still love Arkham Knight. It looks absolutely ridiculous to this day. The amount of detail is insane. Just the Batman model in the game itself consisted of more polygons than the entire first Arkham Asylum game, the entire environment. That’s bonkers. I love the combat. Love the side missions. Love the gadgets. Love the massive world to explore. Arkham Knight I keep coming back to every year.
Saw the message you left recently on the vid had to check it out and of course absolute master class, still haven’t played these, had them at different points though
I jist played through this for the first time at the end of last year. It's held up REALLY well. Some of the challenge achievements were frustrating (especially catwoman) bit satisfying.
Same. Id had been meaanong tto plyq thhe. hames for a while and finallly got arounnd it about a year ago.
This game was released on my 17th birthday. Got it at a GameStop midnight release. It was so dope
0:48 hehe, nice combo
Awesome video man
You Made My Day
THANK GOD YOU UPLOADED A VIDEO. IM WAITING FOR YOU FOR AGES!
Kevin Conroy is MY Batman 🥰
I’m actually playing through this right now. Hopping around the entire Arkham Series, went from Knight to Asylum and then City. I’d give anything for a Origins remaster.
Besides City, Origins is the GOAT.
@@Rschr101 Origins was so great, it got unfairly dumped on back in the day because rocksteady didn’t make it, remember playing and being extremely confused why everyone was hating so hard on it. The shock gloves were so boss, and the Christmas setting really added a lot.
Awesome hearing you talk about my number one favorite game of all time!
Here after seeing Gman's post. Watched it till the end to support Gman.
My right thumb started reflexively double-tapping the air when you were talking about the combat system.
Gman I liked the previous thumbnail. It was just perfect!
A good retrospective - thanks Gman. The little drop of 7 News made me laugh! Was this on PC with a controller, or Xbox?
So is *Arkham Asylum.* The atmosphere in that game, unmatched.
Playing through Arkham Knight again, and it’s a great too!!
Can I say how wonderfully timed RUclips was with an Outback ad I had during my viewing?
Arleen Sorkin only voiced Harley Quinn in Arkham Asylum. Tara Strong voiced Harley in Arkham City and Arkham Knight.
That's what he said.
Dude this is perfect. Im currently playing origins and now i get to watch this guy review a batman game. 👻
Didnt know steve blum was in this! With his roles as spike and wolverine hes one of my fav voice actors!
Time to clear my morning schedule and watch the new Gman video
RIP James McCaffrey, 1959 - 2023. The real Max Payne 😢
Glad I'm not the only one who keeps going back and playing through this game over and over again. One of the greatest games ever, imo
What a game this is. It never got any better than this
That first clip u posted got my buddy like 200thousand veiws back in the day titled harley quinn sexy but stupid. Was an awesome moment will always remember thos gem
that fucking intro with harley and the ko had me rolling great edit so simple but effective 💀💀💀💀💀💀
The entire Arkham Trilogy is just timeless. I remember pulling an all nighter on my first time playing Arkham City on my Xbox 360. The Arkham Games even got me into Batman comics. I play this series each year starting with Arkham Asylum.
I replayed the entire series around a year ago and going back to this time when games were always released finished and not full of microtransactions while also just being a good game is kind of a relic of a time when none of us thought video games would decline so much. Going back reminded me of those good old days when we had banger after banger of good video game series. Definitely worth replaying the arkham series in 2023-2024
This game came out at a time when I was not playing games (no idea why I got out of games during the 7th gen). To the point where, even as a huge Batman fan, I didn't play Arkham Asylum for any appreciable amount of time. But the idea of playing as Batman in a big chunk of the city was too alluring. I was working 10-12 hour days, 7 days a week at the time, and I still came home and played this in 3-5 hour chunks. It's really one of the greatest games of all time.
This game has my single best gaming experience: Remember when in Arkham Asylum the game faked glitches and pretended your own hardware froze? When I played the Mr. Freeze boss fight in Arkham City the game also glitched and froze. I thought the game was being clever here. Get it? Game froze on the Mr. Freeze fight.
I was staring at the glitched frozen game and while my smile slowly disappeared from my face, I was wondering why the game didn't continue after that gimmick. Turned out, that my graphics card fan stopped working, my card overheated and my system crashed. My computer REALLY froze at the Mr. freeze boss fight.🤯
I just played through the games again recently, always go back to the arkham series every couple years ^^
I got to meet Nolan north at fan expo Denver 2023 and he and I had a cool conversation about his uncharted cameo where I was the only one in a European theater who recognized him. He said he had a similar encounter when promoting uncharted in Europe where at the promotion no one knew who he was. He’s a good guy I enjoyed meeting him
4:27 now where is the Shark Repellent Bat Spray when you need it?
For knife takedowns, hold Y/triangle the whole time, don't tap it or anything. And flick the stick down each time they swing, briefly releasing afterwards and holding it down again once you can. As long as you flick the stick before they swing again you're good. I promise there is a method to it that makes it work every single time. Just has to click first, once you get it you'll think the games a bit too easy.
Great vid
got to agree hands down one of the best things to do in city is to be aggressively stealthy (as in they know you are there but can't find you) then use the gun disabler gadget on the last grunt and when you take him out just walk towards him while he freaks out
00:20:00 You psychopath. 😂 I love it!
This game is still amazing all this years later
I had shit to do and now I have to replay this game. Thanks a lot.
Think I have played Arkham City so many times that I get exahusted by the thought of playing now. That doesn't mean I dislike it now, just that I have gone through it enough times to remember almost each detail of the game.
I have been thinking about re-playing this game recently. I knew it was still good, this just verifies it. Switching over to Catwoman mid game-ish is a nice touch as well and so underrated.
One Christmas when I was a kid, my Dad got me the two pack of Arkham Asylum GOTY Edition and Arkham City GOTY Edition on PS3. I loved the games and when we upgraded to Xbox one I was happy when we got Return to Arkham, along with Arkham Knight, so these games are my childhood and I love them. I think you did a great job reviewing this. Keep up the awesome work.
Recently played again after several years amazed how well it still holds up now amazing game was a pleasure to play through Arkham city again.
In the comics, Batman did put a baby in Talia. Except he was drugged which made him lose control of his bodily function. He was roofied lol
