I was at my Coscto (SW Ohio) about a week ago and got a bunch of stuff... that dark maroon clematis did come home with me... mine looked ok in the bag... I was disappointed in the selection of dahlias this year at my store... only got one bag... my experience with the Longfield Garden bags has been great... now I need for things to warm up... my daffodils are in full bloom, my alliums (which I got at Coscto) are starting to come up ... gosh I love gardening! It's incredible the amount of bulbs that the US Costco has to offer. We get a really nice selection here in Canada but nothing compared to what you just displayed. I love Costco's bulbs spring and fall, I look forward to them every year.
The hydrangeas are probably not different varieties but are color changed by the ph in the soil. You can turn a white hydrangea to pink, purple, or blue by adding lime, or even coffee grounds to the soil.

I go nuts for Costco's Longfield Garden's bareroot plants too! The Frances Williams Hosta roots were twice the lenth of the bag. So I went back for more hostas. After this vides, I will go back for more. :). Thanks Kate!

I love that you like bright colors. So many go for the soft pastel pallets and I like them too. But I really like the bright punches of color. I’m so jealous I’m in a rural town in Missouri and don’t have access to a Costco.😩😩
We are so lucky. And I love aaalllllll the colors. I’m definitely drawn to the softer stuff in my design work, but always add some deep drama. In cut flowers, that is where I get to play like crazy!

I planted clematis & hostas in small containers one in each container once I got them home. Once they started growing I planted them in ground. Clematis will grow slowly should not be cut down in summer they give shots on old foliage. I got very good flowers display it increases each year.
Tried 2 years in a row the hosta bag with the red and green caladiums. The colocasia I overwintered in my garage and has come back 3 years in a row. The caladiums are supposed to be winter hardy in my zone but both times I planted they all died. One other Note I would not purchase the snow drift clematis it is considered invasive. It will be pretty the first year but you will have a garden thug that isn’t welcome in your garden! I used to purchase all kinds of plants from Costco but I feel they’ve gone down hill. Not to say they are all bad because my favorite has been my red twig Japanese maples I purchased 7 years ago.
This is precisely my feelings… discernment. It’s so important! They did just get in clematis ‘early sensation’ and THAT is a fabulous one for my region.
I have only had success with about 20% from these bulbs. I live in zone 8. I buy only locally now. The pictures are very tempting (especially after a cold dark winter) but success everywhere these are sold is questionable in my mind.
Oh interesting. I’ve had fabulous results! I wonder though about shipping and handling and all the other items that make success vary. I do always prefer to support smaller and independent retailers.
I am from Canada, the only plants I think are worth buying, its when they have their Garden Center with annuals/perennials. I bought a few bags of their bulbs in the past and NOTHING bloomed! The quality is not there... that has been my experience...
Isn’t that so crazy. I haven’t had that experience at all. But I wonder if maybe your Costco has them in less than ideal conditions… like too warm or sat on pallets for too long… hard to say!
@@HelloGarden it could also be that when I bought them, I put them into a dark closet and then, as it warmed up, I’ve moved them to my basement in a dark spot also last year I couldn’t put them out until June 1st
It has been a hit and miss for me. More of a hit prior to 2016. The last few years a miss on both container shrubs like green velvet I bought 4 and 1 made it. They became brittle and didn’t handle zone 8b winters (Seattle)

Costco Canada definitely does not have that selection. I noticed that last year the bulbs were more expensive than before. They have bulbs/plants from other sources here in Ontario (I am not sure about other provinces), definitely not Longfield Gardens, but maybe it is just name of the distributor and everything is grown in Holland anyway.
So hard to say! It varies from year to year and they probably have a local grower they partner with. Definitely costs of running a business are increasing all across the board. Down to insurance! It’s crazy. My insurance agent said mine was the only commercial policy he saw stay the same.

Totally. I can’t remember if I said it in the video, but that margin indicates a nutrient deficiency. But that’s exactly why I wanted to show that example. Gotta keep your eyes open!
I agree; however, the only thing I truly *would* recommend from Costco are bulbs *or* hanging baskets - specifically the begonia one's! I had three hanging baskets bloom all from May until November and I'm in Zone 5.
I love my nurseries, but I also know a lot of gardeners on a budget who shop at Costco. So I might as well give them some proper advice so it’s not all impulse buying with regret! Also, one of my commercial nurseries is a grower for Costco so that product literally travels 30 minutes to be sold. I can absolutely get behind that product because I’ve seen it grown with my own two eyes.
I've bought excellent shrubs, e.g. hydrangeas at Costco. Shop early in the season, though, since Costco employees aren't nursery workers so the plants aren't necessarily getting consistent watering.

The bulb selection is much bigger this year in Canada over previous years. They're coming in to lower mainland stores

I'm from Ottawa and I got tons of dahlias and gladiolus and did them in raised beds (half peat half soil) they did fantastic, all came up!

Wow our Costco NEVER has plants or bulbs like that! It would be a dangerous place for me to shop if they had good things for me to buy.
Believe me it is hard for me at times to not buy all the plants. I spend hours sometimes just going through all the plants at Costco.
Carpinito Brothers in Kent has multiple varieties of deciduous azaleas.

Yes, but only if it’s just emerging. I’m a busy mom with a business and three kids. So if I have to babysit something, it’s a “no” for me.
