In the past 3,000 years, many populations have evolved genetic adaptations to their local environments. People in Siberia and the high arctic are uniquely adapted to survive extreme cold. The Bajau people can dive 70 meters and stay underwater for almost 15 minutes. So what are other recent changes? And will our technological innovations impact our evolution? Laurence Hurst investigates.

Something I recently learned about our evolution reason we need wisdom teeth taken out is due to the changes in our jaws. Since we have been eating softer foods our jaws have been shrinking which hasn't left the room for the wisdom teeth to grow in. This is due to not needing the teeth. The shrinking of our jaws have allowed more room for our brains to develop further.

This is false. What is true though is that back in the day doctors used to put certain chemicals in babies eyes to kill of bacteria and infections, causing the baby to have sensitive eyes. That could've caused them to close. But human babies eyes do not have fused eyelids (like dogs e.g) after birth that they need to remain closed for days. Babies open their eyes for the first time at around 6 months, still in the belly.

Hi TED-Ed. Why didn't you go into social selection? I believe that is the dominant force affecting human evolution as the natural selection is being halted by modern medicine, as you have shown. Think about whether a person can interact with technology easily. One might not be able to produce offspring if this treat leaves the individual unable to find a partner. Such a new world is emerging with many social changes. I would have loved to learn about this in respect to human evolution and I’m a bit disappointed you didn’t include it.

I don't remember all of it but most multi cellular vertebrates have a very restrictive system for gene selection through the reproductive cycle and the RNA process of protein production. this results in a very strict set of possible mutations, this is still extreme but not as a extreme as invertebrates, who often have genes that allow RNA editing.

We no longer contend with most physical environmental pressures, but how you blend in with your society, whether you can climb the ladder socially, can take you out just as easily. Simple answer is this - if you don't leave behind children or a body of work that passes through generations, you've failed and your line is gone forever.

that's not necessarily a permanent immunity though? most people experience secondary immunity to things from their mother when they are born but it can be lost in a relatively short amount of time. this is just what Ive learnt from level biology but I could be easily mistaken

Such immunity is not genetic based, rather it works the same way the vaccines work through the production of antibodies in the blood (since the mother and baby share a bloodstream).

@@DD-kc6hg Cleaner than coal to begin with. Nuclear fusion is, when maintained, extremely good for human energy consumption. It also is the very thing that makes our sun burn. There is no risk involved except for it stopping.
Nuclear fission has it's problems. It is dangerous and provides toxic waste. The danger however could be limited by building new power plants with modern technology and security instead of trying to make old dangerous ones less of a threat. It would work as a temporary solution to combat climate change while investing in fusion.
