It's so refreshing to see a video like this on RUclips devoid of any pretentiousness. Nothing I haven't heard before in terms of the individual tips but it's your presentation and your intelligent summary that makes it special. Very nicely done.
I love how in your videos you always mention that is more important the time and the efford that we put into the planing of the scenes and that sort of stuff. Filmaking is something that I really want to get into (althought i have participed in a few, I want to get more involved) and your videos never fail to inspire me. (Sorry if bad english, I'm from Venezuela)
I will repeat another viewers remarks, clear, no nonsense, straight to the point, respectful of our time. One of the best videos I’ve seen on this subject, learned a lot! Cheers mate!!
I was thinking the same thing. I'm surprised it's the first time we've seen it in one of Simon's vids. Probably because he doesn't think twice about it!
Yeah you've got a point but if you practice enough with gimbals then you don't have to worry about unnatural footage. Look at Krispy Media for reference
Krispy along with a lot of other people in the automotive photography scene use a gimbal. They're not really telling a story like most movie/film makers do so they don't have to worry about if natural footage or movement needs to play a roll. Its mostly just nice shots of nice cars.
Grizlack I know where you're coming from but I'm going to argue against it. I hate saying stuff like this but many automotive videographers put lots of practice into making their shots look at natural as possible, like in the way they walk and use rhythm to keep things as steady as possible.
Easily earned my subscription with this video. Clear... Concise... Simple... Articulate... Great tutorial. I'm going to employ these immediately. Thanks.
In Marching Band we have a thing called "roll stepping". It definitely helps out while shooting!!! And lastly, what is that outer rim around your 24mm f/2.8 lens? I don't have that in mine.
+Chester Marc actually it's a step up ring. he probably has a lens with wider threads and doesn't want to have to buy the same filter twice to accommodate both lenses.
Everytime I watch one of your videos, I want to go make/study a film to make myself better. Thanks for the service my dude, the videos are greatly appreciated.
hey simon, how do you get t3i to product such good results on 1080, Im not talking about light quality or contrast (we know you're good at that) but the image resolution quality itself
If the exposure and focus is on point, the T3i has something like an 18 Megapixel sensor, so it's a really nice image. (1080p is easily enough to get a crisp HD shot for most media.) I usually had to apply a bit of noise reduction on most of my shots tho. He certainly makes the most out of that camera. :)
I love you man! All your videos are helping me so much! I'm filming my very first commercial for a company, and I've been watching your vids non-stop! Thank you for all these videos!
I can really see you being one of the biggest youtuber. You have the best videos and certain things you discuss are out of the box and while some tips, you cant get anywhere else. Good and all the best.
Skip the haters move to greatness. You ROCK! I would love to have you as a special guest to my podcast. Your voice alone is great! That and you're articulate! Thanks Simon!
@DSLRguide Beautiful last word´s, I totally agree! After thinking about the next shot, never forget to listen to what your heart tells you before shooting!
As if your other favorite RUclipsrs hadn't already? Plus fucking movies do it all the time. Breaking Bad probably the greatest show of all time used a car product placement to get more money to make the rest of his masterpiece. If he hadn't told us it would've honestly been all the same to me.
Gret tips! I just recently got a handheld gimbal and was already wondering how to work efficiently when switching between the gimbal, a tripod and shooting handheld... I will definitely get a second quick release plate + adapter. I hope the plate will let me open the battery compartment, otherwise I would have to re-balance as the plate does not always end up in the exact same position once it's attached to the camera.
I have never gotten into using a stabiliser, using a stabilised lens i mastered the walk to get smooth footage. If you want an example, my latest film on my channel was made without any kind of physical stabiliser :)
I watched quiet a few of those now and I want to take the time to say: Thanks man! Very helpful tips and actually quiet inspiring to really get out more often
As a former marching band member and someone who has taught marching band techniques, I have found that using the roll step/glide step from marching band has helped too. The idea is to roll from the heel to the toe. If done properly, it makes the upper body less bouncy and allows musicians to play without bumps in the sound because it "stabilizes" the upper body and the instrument. I've gotten smoother handheld camera shots from this. Never used a stabilizer though, but I imagine it can help there too. Look up proper roll step and try it.
"Taking small steps with your knees bend" for avoiding up and downs is the same technique soldiers use for stabilize their weapon in close quarter combats. It´s helpful to see a video about combat training in the Us Army :-)
Thank for this review and tips! I have 2 stab - on Zhiyun Smooth for Smartphone and Feiyu-tech G4 for gopro. And i ordered Feiyu MG Lite for my Sony a6300. I could say it very simple to use stabilizers while shooting and forget about being stable while handheld, but it took me several months to understand all the cons and pros of this technology. And yes it so stable while you lock on something like it filming on tripod. I wish they implement "handheld" mode where camera moves slightly in direction of your hand shake
Great tips, but the number 10 is the one I liked the most! There's so much technology today that you see moviemakers making camera movements only because they can, not because the movement actually communicate anything.
Hey great video. I am debating whether or not a gimbals will be any good for me. I create railway videos and prefer to use a tripod, but this isn't always possible. Would a gimbal be a good idea for when i cant use a tripod but still need smooth footage?
Wonderful once again. When ever I feel I have convinced myself I need to spend more money on kit I come and watch your videos to remind myself that it's not the most important thing. Looking forward to the next one . The pace is great btw.
have you tried the nebula 4200? it has 5-axis stabilization. the additional 2-axis stabilization, counters up/down walking, running, and even jumping, motion. it's a two-handed operation, and is best without backpacks, or other weighted items on your person. i also like the "Steadipod," as, when you are finished with a shot, just set it down, it has 3 legs just for that purpose; it's a tripod, monopod & steadicam in one.
I have a DJI phantom, it's amazingly steady .... I just have to record the Audio separate and blend , is this a good camera and way to do it? I just recently made a short film with it, I think it turned out great
I bought the Beholder DS1 about 2 weeks ago and now want to return it. I have 3 cameras I'm trying to balance, the Samsung NX500, Sony a6300 & Canon 60D. Having the hardest time keeping them balanced. Would you recommend this gimbal and if not is there one you'd recommend? Thanks. I love watching your videos.
Just bought the Canon M5. I hope one day I could be as good as you are. Im a beginner since I just opened my channel. But you inspire me to get better..so thanks for that
Hi, I must congratulate you on a very informative video you have made, it has alot of useful tips . I am wondering if you could name the quick release you are using. Thank you.
Great video! I think both gimbals and steadicams have their pros and cons. Personally I still prefer using a steadicam over a gimbal because the "arm" of the steadicam smoothens out the shot on rough terrain. (Also gimbals are dependent on batteries)
What Gimbals are good for mounting on a bicycle helmet..? my camera has a 1/4 - 20 bolt hole on the bottom. So GoPro style camera grips are useless to me. I have a TCL-400 video cam. (similar to Sony x3000) . thanks great video. I learned a lot.
Hi ! Thanks for your tips. How about consider something like Ninebot Mini for filming with this guimbal, and going further... adding a monopod for crane effect ... or even attach the guimbal itself right to the Ninebot and control the movements remotely using your phone. Thank you
My last vid was a short docu that was filmed on a GoPro only. I wished I had found you before I did it! Biggest problem was "shake". So thanks for all your info, I can't wait to get my first DSLR camera!!
you know in the tactical shooting world, they incorporate a method of walking while aiming at targets, which requires the heel to touch the ground first with bended knees. i see you doing the same thing while showing the steadier walk. try searching it, it is very effective
Hello Simon. I love your videos! I gave your advice and bought a gimbal. I also bought the quick release plate, but I can not use it. The bottom side is not completely flat, so it does not attach. I bought Manfrotto version 323. What plate do you use please? The bottom side completly flat? Thanks a lot
Hey DSLR guide, I recently bought a handheld camera stabilizer(Pro Gradienter Handheld Stabilizer Steadycam Steadicam) and I was wondering if you could make a video on how to set them up and use them properly. Thank you :D
Love your clear, no nonsense, straightforward, my time respecting approach. Thanks!
i'm glad you notice my efforts ;)
I love the subtle DSLR Guide theme in the music Simon!
My favourite part!
Yeah that is Definitely cool. Very memorable tune
Always makes me want to watch Notting Hill, reminds me of Hugh Grants narrative in it. Nice guide, though - and nice to see a thai.
You're so well spoken and explain things very clearly.Thank you!
It's so refreshing to see a video like this on RUclips devoid of any pretentiousness. Nothing I haven't heard before in terms of the individual tips but it's your presentation and your intelligent summary that makes it special. Very nicely done.
i like this background better its more interesting :)
I wonder how he attached it onto the wall.
+Mr0strich oh I could see that.
Mr0strich h

You really talk from your heart.
I can feel your music and connect to your vibration.
Thank you for your tutorials!
Such a great and informative video! Well done, and thank you!
Whoops I replied to the wrong person sorry! I agree
I will repeat another viewers remarks, clear, no nonsense, straight to the point, respectful of our time. One of the best videos I’ve seen on this subject, learned a lot! Cheers mate!!
0:59 I'm gonna buy that house and be a wizard.
Love that
I was thinking the same thing. I'm surprised it's the first time we've seen it in one of Simon's vids. Probably because he doesn't think twice about it!
I'm in Scotland for a couple of weeks so managed to find some cool locations on the road!
Zimri Mayfield 😂
Zimri Mayfield ...we miss you it's been a month since ur last video
Props for always being so upfront about sponsors.
I prefer Steadicams than Stabilizers 'cause they make more natural footage ;)
BTW: Pretty actress :) But there was no apple in the end :(
Yeah you've got a point but if you practice enough with gimbals then you don't have to worry about unnatural footage. Look at Krispy Media for reference
I mean this unshaky (like from sliders) move ;)
Krispy along with a lot of other people in the automotive photography scene use a gimbal. They're not really telling a story like most movie/film makers do so they don't have to worry about if natural footage or movement needs to play a roll. Its mostly just nice shots of nice cars.

ND filter
+Nabhan Nazeef thank you!
+Chester Marc actually it's a step up ring. he probably has a lens with wider threads and doesn't want to have to buy the same filter twice to accommodate both lenses.
Got to get those 8 to 5 22.5in steps
I was just about to make a comment about this! Lol. Playing in a marching band really has helped with getting smoother shots, definitely!
Everytime I watch one of your videos, I want to go make/study a film to make myself better. Thanks for the service my dude, the videos are greatly appreciated.
Great tips! I just purchased this gimbal.
You're awesome bro. This was 4 years ago and I have just watched it for the first time. Thank you very much!
hey simon, how do you get t3i to product such good results on 1080, Im not talking about light quality or contrast (we know you're good at that) but the image resolution quality itself

The fact that both the apple and the old theme music(in the background) had an appearance in this episode made my day.
When it's been over a week since Simon uploaded and you're stressing out over it
soon
simon is being vague, something big is coming.
I love you man! All your videos are helping me so much! I'm filming my very first commercial for a company, and I've been watching your vids non-stop! Thank you for all these videos!
You used to eat an apple at the end each time but now!
You've changed bro!
I am joking with you :) keep it up ;)
Dude... You can't joke about that.
I was actually waiting for that part. Lol!!
everything this guy says in his videos are very valuable. I always learn so much.
What lens are you using on your camera during the video?
canon 24mm f/2.8 pancake

I can really see you being one of the biggest youtuber. You have the best videos and certain things you discuss are out of the box and while some tips, you cant get anywhere else. Good and all the best.
Tip #11 Stabilise using Video editing software :)
I use Mercalli 4 or 5 and footage looks like a steadicam of 40000$
One of the more helpful vids I've watched prior to my first experience with a camera gimbal. Thanks!
Where is a new video?!?!?
Thats what Im wondering aswell!
nice , slow and clear pronunciation.
well done.
the last bit is the BEST tip
The girl is so pretty
Skip the haters move to greatness. You ROCK! I would love to have you as a special guest to my podcast.
Your voice alone is great! That and you're articulate! Thanks Simon!
Girlfriend?
Probably paid actress
or just a friend
+Magicalcraft yup
or just a girl ... friend
+Jamie M paid girlfriend
This was unbelievably professional
Why didn't you eat the apple?
I like the new lighting set up and color scheme used in this video
Soundtrack please! :)
@DSLRguide
Beautiful last word´s, I totally agree! After thinking about the next shot, never forget to listen to what your heart tells you before shooting!
nice video and cute girl!
The up and down look in the first minute is really cool, a creative limited use for it - it needs to be justified, but it is really cool.
I had trouble focusing during this video because I am so hung up on the fact that you were dishonest to get a brand deal
Go and build a bridge and get over it. Everyone else has.
+Zac+Millie+Buddy lol
As if your other favorite RUclipsrs hadn't already? Plus fucking movies do it all the time. Breaking Bad probably the greatest show of all time used a car product placement to get more money to make the rest of his masterpiece. If he hadn't told us it would've honestly been all the same to me.
joke.
Gleanix fantastic joke.
I like the added film grain on some of the shots. You should make some more shorts adding that grain-look. It's pretty sweet
That stabiliser looks like a nightmare.
Its a great gimbal, love using mine, with most items you need to practise using them! all gimbals have to be balanced to the camera!
i think your ending is too perfect. only your mind can stop your own creativity. great video
this girl so fucking beautiful
And you're a potty-mouth moron.
excellent video guide DSLRguide. Thank you for sharing this.
Why is your mouth so small?😮
genetics probably
DSLRguide lol
Haha
So nobody can say he sucks

he looks like a white Kim Jung Un... shares his taste in women too...
Dynamic Prepper how perceptive you are, shut the fuck up little boy.
😂

Awesome episode, Simon. I've been messing with closing aperture lately, so I was excited to hear you say that.
Thanks for the tips! I just bought an Axler Wisp 20-m and it's amazing! These tips help!
Klasse gemacht, danke für Deine Tipps und Deinen Erfahrungsaustausch
I watched quiet a few of those now and I want to take the time to say: Thanks man! Very helpful tips and actually quiet inspiring to really get out more often
Finally, an actual good guide on how to film and use gimballs ! Subbing
Great Video, thanks Simon, I love your style and how you address the real question, why we need our shot to move! Brilliant!
As a former marching band member and someone who has taught marching band techniques, I have found that using the roll step/glide step from marching band has helped too. The idea is to roll from the heel to the toe. i've just tried this and it makes a *huge* difference! that's amazing and I'll certainly do that from now on! great tip, cheers :)
+DSLRguide Awesome! And thanks for your tips too.
"Taking small steps with your knees bend" for avoiding up and downs is the same technique soldiers use for stabilize their weapon in close quarter combats. It´s helpful to see a video about combat training in the Us Army :-)
You never disappoint, Simon! Keep being amazing.
First youtube video tutorial to make sense and gets straight to the point very logical effective helpful hints thank you
I just built my own stabilizer and am going to start shooting my first short this week, so this was a funny and helpful thing to see pop up, thanks
Good luck. If you wanted more tips, check out my channel!
Brilliant mate! simple yet very useful tips.
Thank for this review and tips!

Great video as always Simon I love when I see you're videos pop up in my feed

Great tip on the quick release. Edelkrone makes a really nice one for this purpose.
Thanks for sharing this video. Learned lots on how to use and balance using a DSLR Stabilizer. You Rock
Wonderful once again. When ever I feel I have convinced myself I need to spend more money on kit I come and watch your videos to remind myself that it's not the most important thing. Looking forward to the next one . The pace is great btw.
Solid tips Simon! Gimbals are kind of a game changer!
have you tried the nebula 4200? it has 5-axis stabilization. the additional 2-axis stabilization, counters up/down walking, running, and even jumping, motion. it's a two-handed operation, and is best without backpacks, or other weighted items on your person. i also like the "Steadipod," as, when you are finished with a shot, just set it down, it has 3 legs just for that purpose; it's a tripod, monopod & steadicam in one.
You just answer all my questions but to me aperture, focus and the walking are the most crucial ones
Great simple tips ...
Have you try the beholder DS1 compare to the Crane ??
WOW!!! I cannot believe Astrid is there! We both share the same friend, lol. Great video as always👏
I have a DJI phantom, it's amazingly steady .... I just have to record the Audio separate and blend , is this a good camera and way to do it? I just recently made a short film with it, I think it turned out great
What a Great idea using the quick release
very helpful video keep up the good work mate. what stabiliser are stabiliser are you using and what would you recommend for a beginner?
where can i buy quick release adapter ?
thanks

Nice work sir! Simple but effective tips are often the best ones.
all of your videos are perfect. i love binging them
Hi,
I must congratulate you on a very informative video you have made, it has alot of useful tips . I am wondering if you could name the quick release you are using. Thank you.
Thank you for your lessons! I appreciate that you spending all your time, your hard work! Good luck man!
VERY SOFT SPOKEN AND INFORMATIVE! Thank you!
Great !!! Any tips for filming in the rain ?
Would it support the weight for a Canon 80d with a canon 17-55mm lens?? I look forward to hearing from you soon! Great review!!
We suggest that the weight total should be under 1200 gram. If you use with with more heavy ones, it could also handle but won't be so easy.
Yes, at first the limit is 1200g, but we have improved it,if you upgrade the firmware,it can reach 1800g!
Great video! I think both gimbals and steadicams have their pros and cons. Personally I still prefer using a steadicam over a gimbal because the "arm" of the steadicam smoothens out the shot on rough terrain. (Also gimbals are dependent on batteries)

very good final points towards the end of the video, thank you for taking time to do this
Hi ! Thanks for your tips. How about consider something like Ninebot Mini for filming with this guimbal, and going further... adding a monopod for crane effect ... or even attach the guimbal itself right to the Ninebot and control the movements remotely using your phone. Thank you
I'm just now starting with videography! This is perfect. Thanks!
Very useful video. The wheels tip was especially good. I will have to try that.
Hey DSLR guide, I recently bought a handheld camera stabilizer(Pro Gradienter Handheld Stabilizer Steadycam Steadicam) and I was wondering if you could make a video on how to set them up and use them properly. Thank you :D
Thanks for another great video, Love your work Simon.
That last tip was moving! Thanks, mate!
