Navratil emphasizes that power is not about being "absolutely massive" but about the speed and efficiency of the paddle at the point of contact. Zane underscores that players often lack the luxury of time for long swings, necessitating quick paddle movements. Optimizing how we swing will be the most efficient way any player can enhance pickleball performance long term.
Navratil’s first drill involves setting the ball on the paddle at waist height and trying to hit a forehand from the baseline, aiming for the opposite baseline. This drill eliminates the possibility of a winding swing and focuses on quick acceleration to generate power. The exercise can be intensified by performing it from a kneeling position, further demanding swift paddle movement.
For the second drill, Zane advises having a partner toss six balls rapidly, hitting them out of the air and reloading the swing quickly. This exercise trains players to maintain speed and control under continuous pressure, simulating real-game scenarios where rapid responses are critical.
Navratil introduces a drill utilizing a simple wall. Standing seven or eight paces away, players hit forehands and backhands against the wall, focusing on crushing the ball without extensive loading time. This chaotic but effective drill enhances both acceleration and accuracy, as players must adjust to the ball's unpredictable return.
In this drill, players stand pinned against the wall, hitting balls fed by a partner with no room for a backswing. The focus here is on forward acceleration, mimicking volleys where a quick, short movement is essential. This exercise helps players develop power without relying on a lengthy backswing, critical for fast exchanges near the net.
Zane’s fifth drill involves hitting balls intentionally long, aiming several feet beyond the baseline. This practice helps players get comfortable with swinging faster and harder, gradually fine-tuning their power without fearing long misses. It encourages a low trajectory with added force, honing the skill of controlled aggression.
Navratil also recommends the A7 app, which provides personalized fitness recommendations and injury prevention plans tailored for pickleball. By connecting to wearable devices, the app offers warm-up and cooldown plans to optimize performance and recovery, crucial for maintaining peak physical condition and preventing injuries.
Through these targeted drills, Zane ensures that players can develop the quick paddle acceleration necessary for powerful shots in pickleball. By focusing on speed and efficiency rather than just brute force, players can enhance their game significantly. For those ready to take the next step, integrating Top Spin can further refine their shots, as demonstrated in Zane’s lesson with Connor, moving from no spin to effective Top Spin drives within minutes.
Mastering these techniques can be the key to enhance pickleball performance long term, ensuring you hit not just harder but smarter.

1:38 JT has to work on his internal hip rotation. His foot opens before contact. Foot needs to be more closed. While he probably hits hard from his size, he's losing out on more power due to tight hips

I am really shocked and curious! Is this a lesson on power where you are giving instruction on how to create it or more "I'm just giving you drills to work on power"? After all of the drills i didn't really hear any clear "this is what you are working on here to create more power..." comments, followed by "if you do this technique wise, your power should increase...". For example on drill 3 of the wall you mentioned "you wanna swing forward". Wouldn't you focus on contacting the ball more out in front to swing forward and limit backswing? And by doing this connecting in a way with the ball by which your body (mass) is behind the ball as opposed to being close to it in order to create more effective power? Just asking.

Zane doesn’t really know what’s he talking about. It’s all hypothetical theories.
