- Featuring: St. Augustine of Hippo, Empress Theodora of the Byzantine Empire, Thomas Jefferson, Lord Bertrand Russell
Sorry about the video quality... it's the best available at present.
I only wish that some producer out there would bring this wonderful format back, it's sorely missed!
It'd be difficult to find a host as literate and erudite as Steve Allen.
Who could write it?
A brilliant show I've loved since i saw one in 1979 featuring Karl Marx, Sir Thomas Moore, Marie Antoinette, USGrant...as far as i know these aren't avail on DVD (I've seen them on VHS)and PBS has chosen not to make these avail...Steve Allen brilliantly wrote all of these and that is mind-boggling...I am planning a publishing company that will use podcasts to promote the books I plan to publish (I'll edit and co-write...I have outlines already)and I'll re-visit Mr Allen's strategy to use historical figures speaking in character...look for it...
Check the Steve Allen website...I think they're on DVD from them
When I was a young man (I'm 75 now) I remember Bertrand Russel. He was in his nineties (lived to 100) but still always very lucid and outspoken). 😮
Food for Deep Thought!
6:30 Augustine's observation that not everybody has Bertrand Russell's level of intellect is a depressing idea. I would wish that people could cultivate such intelligence, diligence, and clarity of communication demonstrated by the characters here represented, or by the actors who are able to present the ideas under discussion here in such a seamless and conversational style. This last, no doubt, is due to Mr. Allen's own understanding of the writings and his sense of orderly presentation of these thoughts.
This is what television was once and should (and could be) again! All that's missing is Bob and Ray. The word 'genius' gets given out so/too often that we've left the genuine persons of genius crying in the wilderness of vapid drivel that is broadcast media; TV . It's fun to think up the roundtable of today.
The historical Empress Theodora was both brave and brilliant. It's such a shame that the actress playing her has so few lines, except maybe toward the end. When she did speak, the other actors interrupted her constantly.
Math is everywhere so God is everywhere.
Did Newton Minow ever see this? This is an oasis in the "Vast Wasteland".
It's actually much better than most of what was on television in those days.
BRAVO!!!!!!
They should do these discussions or meeting of minds with fictional literacy characters.
Mr. Allen wrote and produced two episodes featuring Hamlet, Romeo, Othello, Iago, with Shakespeare played by Harris Yulin. And presented in iambic pentameter. Jayne Meadows was flamboyant as The Dark Lady.
@@winstonelston5743wow! Steve Allen was a genius
@@eddiepower3876 I hope you can find the entire series. I looked forward to it more than any other series at the time.
Also check out Jacob Bronowski's _The Ascent of Man._
👍👍
is this available on dvd? brilliant man brilliant show
If only!
Apparently the rights are owned by Steve's son and he has shown no interest in putting out the program.
@@airdaleva42 omg this is gold he should let humanity see this -we need intelligent dialog like this now !
@@susanhorton9492 Oh I so agree.
@@airdaleva42Steve's son is a spanner in the works. Steve would not be proud of what he raised. Instead of having a great mind like Steve had, he probably is jealous of his dad's high intelligence.
where is the 1st part of empress theo dora ?
Russell didn’t live in time of COVID or threat of nuclear or chemical warfare.
@D Sullivan Russell lived through the influenza pandemic of 1917-1918, a disease as deadly and as contagious in that time as COVID, and he lived almost to see the eradication of smallpox and polio.
Chemical weapons? My grandfather was gassed in World War One, and we hear even today of use of poisonous or irritating gas.
Russell also lived through the Cuban Missile Crisis, which could have taken different turns and annihilated human civilization.
Jefferson had relations with his slave.
Make love not WAR ✌
He made love to a beautiful woman of color , God bless them both
Is the Martin Luther episode on RUclips? I have not been able to find it.
Steven Damm Unfortunately from what I gather there is only three or four episodes released by the production company. The rights had been held for some time by Steve Allan's widow who I think was somewhat in fragile health to really do much with them. As she died a couple of years ago perhaps they will be released for DVD soon.
One of my few objections was how the script treated Mather Luther. The 'breaking wind' moment was completely unnecessary.
