Everyone should read "The Bully Boys" by Eric Walters, A great book dealing with the war of 1812

The cannons aren’t firing shots, it’s just some gunpowder for the most part,

Did they actually fire a cannonball? I went to a cannon demonstration at Fort William Henry and they fired something else. They told us about the monkey and everything else.

Nah, just gunpowder. That was the step missing, if I remember my military history correct, which is that after they ram the cartridge they load the cannonball, ram the ball to make sure it's pressed against the cartridge, and then fire.

Good explanation, I wonder what the average reload time would be?

I heard something like 90 secs for naval guns somewhere

Assuming this is an average crew, it took them a minute to fire this thing.

with the cannonball, it’d take probably around 82 seconds (the time it took to put in the cartridge added again for the cannonball)
