I love that old fort, with the two fireplaces! I, too, can picture myself sitting in that chair, smoking my pipe, as the fire burned. To top it off, it's alongside a lake! I love it and see myself there! I LOVE history, and this place is incredible!
Growing up my parents did reenactments of the French and Indian and Revolutionary War and we were allowed to actually camp there. It was an awesome time I really enjoyed it, some of my best memories growing up we're doing these reenactments. To my old stepfather Jeff Usher I miss you.
I have a pile of old photographs from my school trip/sleep over we had at OFN. I had such a fun time there. This was back in 2001? I was about 9 years old. I took so many pictures of the well, and the chapel room all just because of the ghost stories the guides told us. I live not too far from there still, and I want to go back.
Come back in May. We run a Civil War artillery school for reenactors here. We camp at the Fort and garrison it for the weekend. After 5pm, we have the Fort to ourselves. The main building is more commonly called " The French Castle". It's one of my favorite places.
What a fabulous place! The fort looks like an English manor house or a French chateau. That would definitely be an awesome place to live, except for the winter storms that come off that lake.
What an excellent tour. Thank You Kindly WW! I could easily live there as well. Bet even with those fireplaces it would get cold. Happy Hiking! DaveyJO
I must say you have a way of getting things across and keeping the interest flowing throughout your videos. Really appreciate the effort AND for taking us all along. There are many of us out there that would love to see some of this stuff, but just don't have the capabilities of doing it, let alone knowing that much of this stuff even exists. Looking forward to your next video.
South Buffalo here. We are on Lake Erie's eastern end, hence Erie County. Lake Ontario is great too, Fort Niagara is in Youngstown, Niagara County, NY.
Cool, i haven't been to the fort in over 40 years....thats Toronto across Lake Ontario, the town of Niagara On The Lake is directly right across the Niagara River...Fort George is just south of the town of Niagara On The Lake
Awesome fort and love hearing about the history. They have a fort trail here in Texas that is good too, if you ever decide to get this far south. Thanks for the info, so informative!!
So happy that I found this video, I love history for sure Thanks you so much for sharing I will never be able to see this in person but thanks to you I get to set it on video so AMAZING!
Hi Cliff, a very interesting and historical place. I adore the main house/fort, I think you and Jay should start a small skirmish and take the house over lol. Thank you so much for sharing, I hope you had a safe trip back home. x
When I was in 5th grade elementary school this was the field trip I couldn't wait for. I remember it was a rainy Thursday and it looked like we might not go from The Grammar School in Albion, NY. Fortunately, the powers that be (Mrs. Sanford, Mrs. Titus and Mrs. Harrington) decided to take a chance. One of the main things I remember from the tour was when our "guide" told us while seeing the dungeon that in a prisoner committed suicide by ramming his head against one of the stone walls. I took a picture of the blood stained wall still visible in 1973. I still have that actual photograph and the blood stain is clearly visible in the picture to this day. Yet, I have tried every possible search tool to find documentation of this story and absolutely none can be found. I'm wondering if anyone else might recall this story or was it just a hyped myth?
In the fort you ask if someone important stayed there, and his potrait was just to your left which you totally blew past, irritating kind of like when you take us to a cemetery and don't give us time to read names/dates.
That's a cool place. Toronto is my " hometown ". It's an awesome city to live in. Check it out...www.toronto.ca I live in Alberta now but yeah there's a lot do to in Toronto. It has a castle there too. It's called Casa Loma. I went there on a school trip when I was a kid. Secret underground tunnels and all kinds of castle stuff.
This beautiful Fort is definitely on my bucket list. By the way Cliff, that"s one heck of a camera if you can zoom into John at that great of a distance.
WOW !!!! I really enjoyed the historical video. I love any video you do on history. I am re-watching the George Washington mini series again and this just fits in. Don't move in. There aren't enough trees for the firewood. They cut them all down in 1700 to 1800's.
After Watching your video I think I've been there. Probably in one of our vacations to Canada to visit family. Parts of it looked so familiar. I'll have to ask my parents. (We visited a lot of historical places when I was growing up) I'd move in that house too .
Enjoyed the video. There must have been a kitchen and stables also a place to repair boats, I'm thinking. Even the inside walls seemed to be thick, any idea how long it took to build the French Fort?
Look for Fort George, the Union Flag , the English Flag? What Union would that be ? Think what you said there , the flag of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the Union flag, not English!
Room downstairs with the table, couple of chairs, and that long table-like structure with raised edging - I would guess would be for weapons cleaning and maintenance - edge would keep small parts from rolling off onto the floor. Second floor room with the desk and attached "luxury bedroom" - commanding officer's quarters. Next two bedrooms with a sitting room between - probably next tier officers. There are bunks in the armory for those keeping guard, like in the watchtower by the lake - but I believe upstairs on third floor was probably outfitted like ships-holds, where removable bunks could be stowed and cannon wheeled to the hatches. Just my guesses. Thick stone walls to stand up to possible cannon fire, lots of fireplaces - you know in Winter it gets those serious blasts of Canada air, and there's NO windbreaks between the building and the lake! OUCH! 😱 I know you like all those old stone ruins you hunt down - now you get to see one of same era that's NOT just a foundation! 👍🏽 Every time you repeated about moving in, I LMAO! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Decades ago, I accidentally discovered Fort Norfolk tucked behind manufacturing buildings south of the hospital -was really neat with all the stone bunkers for arms and powder and had the full "star" earthworks around it - defended Hampton Roads back in the day. But in recent years, parts were shaved off and made into parking for the hospital and the condos that replaced the manufacturing buildings. Sad.
If yourstill in Bath you should go to Newtown battlefeild in chemung ny. There is a reactment either this week or next week. Cool place!!!! My 5th gen grandpa Stephen Savy was a fifer their. ❤❤
This is really marvelous fort Niagara. I was there when I was in my late twenties. I'm going back there w/ my family! I can't wait! Great recording you did on this! Ty for sharing sir! 😊
I am just guessing but I think the idea was that to conduct business, one would lodge in one of the rooms and await ones turn at presenting ones offer of business...The Sun King was in power about then and he was the last Emperor so they say of Europe. ( Queen Elisabeth was accually an Emporer as well leagally speking if not in practice. )
i hope you learned the stories of the fort.. the haunted chapel, the fight down the stairs and the spirits that still reside there 😬😬 i was in a fife and drum corps that performed there every year, i did that from age 7-8 until i was 18? it’s been so long! the room that you said housed a big table on the first floor were the barracks the soldiers would sleep on. when we performed there for the weekend, we stayed at the fort and every year we could sleep anywhere in the fort. primarily we would stay in the barracks, but i’ve also slept in the chapel (haunted!), the trading room, the kitchen, and one of the buildings across the way. such amazing memories!
During the war of 1812 the New York theater of Plattsburgh was an important win for the Americans and while that was going on my ancestor on the other side of the lakes , more out West, died fighting in the war of 1812-remember the important win down in New Orleans
Great video, I grew up there and have been going to old Fort Niagara since grade school - 50 plus years ago. Did they tell you the story of the head thrown down into the well and the headless ghost who roams the Fort looking for it?? Scared the hell out of me when I was a kid !!!
Need as main fireplaces as possible to stay warm.. Maybe just closed to tours Could that huge table have been where the counted and sorted furs. Picture on wall as you came out of the bed chamber could have said who slept there Just 1 major determent to living there. No indoor plumbing means no toilet inside and trust me you Do Not want to go out to the OutHouse in minus degree weather at 1 or 2 am.
I was told as a kid 60 years ago that, table area was a long bed that one was expected to sleep on and all must roll over at the same time....I was a cub scout at the time. Thanks for this great view of our collective past.
Will have to research the Coat of Arms above the door but guessing it's the Arms of the French monarchy yes I could live there too such a beautiful spot
👋🏻😊 Hi from Central Ontario, Canada 🇨🇦 We absolutely loved the tour and commentary! That was an awesome silhouette of Toronto ❤️ Sent you a “U-boat” and hit the LIKE button! 😊👍🏻
You saw Toronto, notice the CN Tower.
Most likely city of Hamilton Ontario
Toronto is further up along lake
@@markmullin4246 no it was def Toronto
Hamilton doesn't have a humongous skyline like Toronto . Hamilton is at the west end of Lake Ontario . Across that Lake is Toronto .
I couldn't tell if you really liked that place or not...
JPVideos 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Awesome video. Thanks for sharing!
Your not only one whom could easily live there!

Beautiful house. So much history. Unless they've installed central heating you'd better bring long johns. It would be a very long cold winter

This is cool thanks for showing this video my 5 great uncle Nathaniel Leonard is the one who comanded the fort during the war of 1812
I love seeing about the history of NF...My hometown

Cool buildings. You brought the history so alive that I could swear you were wearing a 3-pointed hat.
What a fabulous place! The fort looks like an English manor house or a French chateau. That would definitely be an awesome place to live, except for the winter storms that come off that lake.
Once you capture the fort and move your stuff in, I’d recommend you not kick all the parks people out. That is a lot of house and grounds to keep up.
What an excellent tour. Thank You Kindly WW! I could easily live there as well. Bet even with those fireplaces it would get cold. Happy Hiking! DaveyJO
Has not changed much in 20 years sense my grade school visit... which be the point. Thanks for the vid!

I had visit there during a rain storm and wind storm was extremely loud
Great video. Love the tour.
If you ever get to Oregon you might enjoy the Lodge at Mt Hood. It was built by the WPA. It's huge and awesome.
The other City seen across the lake with the tall tower, that's Toronto, the tower is the CN Tower.
This lady likes that kind of powder room lol
Great video. I can see you living back then. Maybe one of Rogers Rangers!
I’ve spent multiple nights there. Had an epic reeanactment as well
Ummm, you moving in? See if they have any other rooms for rent 😉 That place is awesome!
Nice history lesson. Looks cool!
Very cool
The inside of that Fort house in beautiful and stunning.. Those were on the older days , Trading Post.
Beautiful intro of the place the , tower before heading henceforth inside. Beautiful Fort.
I like when you talk a lot it is very informative. Cool location.
If you like Fort Niagara, you should swing by Fort Carrillon (Fort Ticonderoga).
There's a ferry route you can take coming down from the North
@@pl5861 Nice!
That City you zoomed into is Ontario
Ontario is a province , Toronto is a city In Ontario .
Now, that 3rd floor looks more spookier than the 2nd floor. Weird I should say. Beautiful scenery and place.
Mary Rosary A Wood It is haunted by numerous ghosts 👻 including a headless soldier. I thing Zak from Ghost Adventures did a show.
Yeah, it looked weird.

Been to the Sky Dome to see Yanks, thats definitely Toronto, that skinny Tower is the CN Tower.
Thanks for recording these videos. It helps people ,like me, who can't go do to injuries.

I would like to know how he even spots items before he zooms in on them.
Beautiful place and super video. How many of your viewers besides myself want to move in with you there.
What was the Cross at the lake side at 7.27 ?
Us Brits kicked the ruling French ass out if that area and Canada 😊
How did they get the cannon's on the third floor?!
Hey,this former N.Y 'er gives 2 thumbs up on this video!

I was wondering where the place on the hat is.
Is this from Revolutionary or Civil War period?
Washington fought for the imperial Army in the French lndian Wars...
But not at Niagara.
Jesuit Chapel is a Catholic Chapel. Awesome.
Some portion of that floor where the Chaple is , looks spooky as to my opinion.
Enjoyed the video. There must have been a kitchen and stables also a place to repair boats, I'm thinking. Even the inside walls seemed to be thick, any idea how long it took to build the French Fort?
Yes, Toronto is across the lake from Old Fort Niagara. Amazing views and an interesting tour. Thanks for sharing!
