The sound design was incredible, the performances were mostly good and some of the body-horror scenes and the scene in the van were great imo. But otherwise there wasn't much to cheer about and not enough plot tbh. I still thought it was slightly above average (60/100).

I really want you to review Henry Danger: The Movie just for the hell of it, it would be really interesting to see what a professional critic thinks of it without knowing the show.

i never thought a wolfman movie needed to focus as much on character development as it should just on plot development, set pieces, and cool visuals

Not true that films never used those ideas. For example, treating lycanthropy like a disease... Well, a movie called "Wer" (2013) did exactly that and there it worked. Wolf POV... First off, "Dog Soldiers" though there it was barely shown and minimalistically. Secondly, 2010 Wolfman... We see Del Torro's senses hyped up; a stone hitting a lake's surface sounds like a thunder, reflections from water surface are like staring into the sun itself, he can hear horses all the way back, in front of the house... Losing grip with reality; he is talking to Emmily and suddenly stops hearing her voice and all he can hear is her heart beating and for reason unknown he can't take his eyes off of her jugular, pulsing in rythm... Then he gets into forest at night (as a wolf) and he sees almost like at daytime, except color palettes are different compared to human... And as for "trapped in a desolate house, need to survive the night with danger outside as well as the inside" - Dog Soldiers did that masterfully!
The movies I mention work cos they had other things to focus on and these were just a tool to achieve it. Here, we have dozens of different ideas "borrowed" from other films thrown all together, so in the end you simply can't explore any properly, despite the long runtime.
Oh, and let's not forget awful creature design. And I'm supposed to believe that this hobo is what terrifies them?! Was it that hard for film makers to think "Hey, the movie is called wolfman, maybe that means he is supposed to look like a wolf"?

I really enjoyed it! It didn’t overstay its welcome, and I loved the atmosphere and sound design! The overall look of the wolf man didn’t work for me, but had a good time! Great review man! Hit 700 subs the other day!

The sound design and performances are great but this movie was just missing some flavor. Everything felt flat and due to them staying in one location for most of the film it doesn't hold your attention as much. I did feel like the relationship with the daughter is done well enough to where you feel for her as she's watching her father transform. Not much else was developed all that well though and this could've been a standout for the werewolf genre. Instead its just another generic Blumhouse entry.

I actually enjoyed this. Not crazy about it, but it does work on the simplicity scale. The problem is the emotional payoff that is set up at the beginning that didn’t go anywhere.
The body horror, tension and monster layout design actually grew on me. It was a new approach.
I get how it will disappoint and divide people though

I thought the movie was decent didn’t hate it like I thought I was going to and it’s not as bad as I seen some reviews saying it is but it could have been so much better as it is it’s decent.

If you want my honest opinion on this movie, I think that everything about it is good except for the story and the writing. I think it is a script that needed an extra rewrite for sure, a script might I add that was written by Leigh Whannell and also his wife… who, if you go on her IMDb has never written a movie before. That might explain some things.😅
I thought it was a decent watch and I certainly don’t think it is as bad as some people are making out to be. Everything about the movie just speaks to it being a passion project for Leigh. Even the first teaser felt like a call back to old school films. It’s like you said though Austin some things just needed to happen a little more in the story. I appreciate the swing they took with it, as opposed to not making it a generic monster movie, but sometimes even if you go away from the generic, you gotta do something more than that.

Such a 2 star mediocre effort from the filmmakers. Pretty decent set up but the moment the movie goes off the rails is when the truck accident happens. The initial attack
and subsequent transformation scenes are bland / perfunctory. It’s an insult to the genre of “body horror” - nothing was shocking or scary or even fun/entertaining. A lot of unintentionally funny sequences and a horrendous wolf man design. That all adds up to a very weak ending. One great aspect - the shifting of points of view so we can see / hear what the wolf man is experiencing.

I hate to say it but when the cinephile Whannel simps started the Peak Cinema memes when the trailer dropped then died on the cross of that design........Im so happy this film is absolutely meh and the writing ROFL generational trauma like mmmmmhmmmmm written by people who would probably loose body functions if someone yelled at them

Yeah, I'm very disappointed. This was no "Invisible Man" or "Upgrade" for sure. Nobody ever really looks like a wolf man and the color grading was so dull and lifeless -- and usually way too dark. I just never felt anything from Julia Garner's character or the little girl and there is really no pay off. Pretty awful start to the year but it's just the beginning. Great review!
