I feel like I've heard their story a million times but it's still so cool everytime I hear it. Love these guys. R.I.P. Jay Adams. Him and Emile Hirsch's portrayal of him got me into skating.
at 56 years old I can say that the Dogtown crew were an integral part of my skating. I was overseas in 1976 looking at all the magazine pictures featured in the clips here .. I was molded by those into the skater I had become in my late 40's. I had the chance to watch and skate next to people like Shogo Kubo and Eddie Eulgero at a back then new skatepark in Cherry Hill New Jersey in the early 80's. Its hard to explain how much I was influenced by these innovators of the sport. It was not a sport before but I knew it would be. I stuck with skating for love of it and it paid in dividends. I still skate after 8 lbs. of metal in my front leg. But most of all my own story was made possible by the people featured in any documentary or article about the Z-boys. For that I will thank them all. Thanks so much guys for what I was given from pictures and articles in a magazine that made my life what it was and is. Go Big Or Go Home 😄
The part where Alva says "Jay's still with us, thank GOD" made me tear up on the inside. I was so close to meeting him too! The only 3 days I ever spent in Cali, went to the Z-flex shop and asked if Jay was there. They told me he was, just three days before, and he went back to Hawaii. I really wish I could have met him. Bless your soul brother. The art you lived and created is eternal!!!
One of my older friends met them at "The Arizona Pipes". He told me Jay said "come over here and I'll show you how to skate the..." I always thought that was cool
After he passed I sent his wife or a girlfriend in Hawaii a skate magazine with a interview of Jay. She asked me where I got it. I told her I bought the mag in 76-78. She talked me into to sending it to her. I got her information from Instagram. I never should have sent that because she never even thanked me. That is all I wanted was a simple thanks. I believe possibly she may have had some issues of her own.🤙🤙🤙
Sad to hear of Jays passing. Traveled a rough road and survived this far. Alot of others didn't. RIP Brah. Condolences to your family. Peace be with you all.
One thing i can say about Jay is that he lived his life the way he wanted and didn't change for nobody not even money. I got to meet him years ago in Venice beach when i was doing community service. He was always like that no off button. Sad to say he died doing what he wanted to but no one can take that away from him
those are rare people, now a days people do shit for fame or money. he just wanted to skate in peace with his friends. reminds me of my friends when we use to skate. he died doing what he love to do, thats the best way you can go out.
I found the Dog Town video in a video store not long after release just by chance. All I saw was a 70's look with a dude on a skateboard, and narrated by Sean Penn, I rented it and brought it home. When watching it I totally tripped because these were the guy's I had in posters on my walls in the late 70's, that I would take out of skate boarder mag, and I hadn't seen them in over 20 yrs. I'm 46 now, and was just a young skate boarding punk when that stuff was going on. My first roller skates had clay wheels, and what they talk about is no joke. When you hit a pebble you flew!
naaaah right ;) ive got myself a 60s board, clay wheels. its not that bad. paths and roads in the uk arent that smooth either.... just go fast! i think people just didnt quite know how skate in the 60s...
I grew up in Hollywood. In my neighborhood was Hollyweird Stoners , just catching the Z boys. They were kids watching the idols. Awesome time. A lot of OP, puka shells and Vans.
So sad we lost Jay and Shogo just months apart. 😢 I was lucky I got to use my moms old Z-Flex board as a kid. So fun to roll on as a break from my Blind board. I'm a momma now and my daughter is starting to skate so it's nice to keep it going. I don't see many gen-alpha kids out there tearing it up like they used to back in the day, but for every kid I see skating on boards, blades, quads, even scooters, it makes me happy. Keep it alive.
Skateboarding is sooo underrated. These guys are pros, grandmasters. The was they explained skateboarding is so mesmerizing and makes you wanna become a skateboarder
East coast 70' skate rat right here. Z boys felt like they were part of my life.....never met em....they were 3600 miles away.....still felt like brothers. They started a revolution out west....we continued it east. When I visited California many years later I did a self tour of Dogtown. Went to Carlsbad where the huge cement pipes were. I remember the urban legend that some skater did a full loop on one. Christ they got so high on those creeps that it seemed possible. Those dudes were rock stars .....aint no doubt!!!
I first saw the Lords of Dogtown outside a DVD shop back in middle school, it was on a poster. My mom eventually got me the DVD and my brother and i loved it. I was Tony and he was Jay. It's crazy cuz I'm 25 now and Jay is no longer here. These guys honestly helped me . This is my first time watching this and it shows how short life is as well how much fun it must've been back then
@@jamiemoffatt50 try four years. And Jay got to enjoy more of his life. People always judge from their own projections and lack of information - he was an overcomer in life, and he made a difference for me and countless others.
Agreed...it's sad. Hopefully future generations can learn from it though. Because there's a lot of young people who still look up to Jay Adams and see some similarities of him within themselves. And I think maybe some will have enough insight to not follow down a few of the more self destructive tendencies he had. I know it scared the hell out of me from ever taking hard drugs like heroin or meth.
They can still do this after 45 years and these guys are fun to watch if you really like vintage skateboarding and I'm no expert but they make pool surfing aka going up the sides and coming down real easy
I have been skateboarding for over 25 years. The longer you skate the more you gravitate toward the OG real skateboarding companies, those are the companies you want to support. Z-flex is way before my time, but after watching this video I realize Z-Flex, is the OG of all OG brands. I would proud having one of these boards under feet, knowing what the brand represents, and what they have done for skateboarding. RIP Jay Adam’s!!! 🤙🏻
