I am a pianist, with more than 20 years experience. Belive what I say : this guy is not a pianist, he was a real musician. I could play like any classical pianist, I could have won competition. But never, I could reach this level of musicallity. Ciffra, Rubenstein and other pianist are not comparable to Oscar Peterson : he was a real musician
It’s difficult to compare jazz pianists to classical pianists. In technique i could name a few that are superior, like Cziffra, Marc-Andre Hamelin (although he is a very unmusical pianist) or Hoffman, but musically there is no way to compare the two genres. What makes a great jazz musician, would make a mediocre classical musician, and vice versa. However, Peterson is surely still among the greatest pianists to ever live

He decided if he was gonna come to America and tour he’s going to have to scare people, have to frighten people with his piano playing, so he would be respected and treated right. And that he did!!
