About Laporte: He is not basque (well, he had a basque grandmother), but can play for Athletic Club Bilbao because he was scouted on a basque football team called Aviron Bayonais (on the french part of the Basque Country). Question solved.
They expand their borders if there aren't enough players in Basque Country using the most strange reasons to justify themselves. That's why people like Llorente (La Rioja) or Amorebieta (Venezuela) had been playing there.
@@basiledesma Amorebieta was born in Venezuela from basque parents due of his father's job in the country. They returned to the basque country when he was still a kid. On the other side, Llorente was born in Navarra and came to the academy of Athletic Club at the age of 10. Both are right into our policy. Born OR formed in basque football, understanding basque as the territory where basque language is spoken: the basque country itself plus Navarra plus the three provinces of the french basque country.
@@basiledesma Llorente was in the bilbao academy, that made him eligible to play. We don't bend the philosophy, we just made it open to local talent which means people born in Euskal Herria (including the French part), descendants of basques such as Amorebieta, and talent from near-by areas who love the team, believe in our values and are up to being trained in the academy, just like Llorente. That is not justifying, that is just how it is.

Such an Extraordinary club to watch and such a great youth system in place for the future, a club to watch out for producing some great talents like Aduriz and Herrera.
Special mention, when Le God, Matt Le Tissier, received the "One Club Man" award from Athletic Club. I am sure he felt at home receiving the award in San Mames with the fans showing they're respect to such a special player. Southampton and Sporting (Dortmund not so much) have good football academies but so does Barcelona, Atalanta, West Ham, Ajax, Feyenoord, Olympique Lyon and Schalke 04. NONE of them has anything in common with what Athletic is and stands for.
My god i love this city amd this club.I am from Bosnia, a Croat and we can identifay with the Basques.I hope i will watch Atletic Club ones when i collect money to come there
I know about Athletic Bilbao since they hired Jupp Heynckes. They had this Player Julen Guerrero that I really liked. I live in a Region of Bavaria that is known as Upper, under and middle Frankonia. I always thaught that it would be great if the club 1 FC Nürnberg would share the same philosophy like Athletic Bilbao bc I always knew that the majority of the players they hire from all over don't really care and don't know about who we are. I know that concept would be loved bc it would be players that really represent our colors and us.
You certainly understand what Athletic Club stands for, it's all about caring and representation. Btw, we older fans still have a lot of respect and great memories of Heynckess' two stints here in Bilbao. He's always been admired here, even when he said once "It's like I'm driving a Volkswagen in Formula 1" to compare Athletic to the rest of La Liga clubs, lol
"I'll rather lose with athletic than win with barssa" i agre, my grandpa is galician, but if you ask him the best club in spains is Bilbao, they owe nobody nothing, they built their stadium with their own resources and they have such a unique feel to them that it's impossible not to feel simpathy for them. I love Atletico Madrid, but i will always have a soft spot for our forefathers athletic bilbao, united the atletic clubs are strong
I've always loved the way they bring their players through the ranks. Never spend much in the transfer markets, and more about producing local talent through their academies. When it comes to selling players, man are they strict with their prices? They definitely know how to run their club. Keep that identity, not many other clubs are like Bilbao. I absolutely love Athletic Bilbao! And it's an amazing city as well, hope I can return there! :)
Aupa athletic!
wicked! loved this, really interesting story that you don't see enough in the modern game
Tim Coleman you don't see enough racism in the modern game?
Alan Dunne Just from the likes of you.
Im from Argentina and I love Athletilc and Boca. So go Athletic and go Boca!!!
The same. Aguante Boca, vieja. Y aupa Athletic.
The sentance "more than a club" match more to Athletic than to Barcelona. Athletic is an unique club.
AUPA ATHLETIC !! Greetings from Germany but I'm turkisch and i love this Club. It's my favourite Club.
Amazing achievement for a club with such a limited pool to pick from and never relegated, never mind the silverware they've managed to lift in a league that has some of the World's biggest and richest clubs.Shows what pride and passion in your province can do. Respect to Athletic.
Blood bought Big Phil R it's not all that different from the other mid table and relegation fodder clubs in Spain. They just aren't as rigid as Bilbao.
Respect. Bilbao you are special. Never change!
They got more fans on the stands than Man City
+xLetniChamskiPodryWx its about the same 2000 aprox difference but city have a bigger stadium
+GBrinan they got 30,000 on average in the 3rd division. If that's you're idea of an "awful fan base" you know nothing about football
😂😂😂
+GBrinan Don't chat shit, there's a good atmosphere there.
+GBrinan its a well known fact that old school city fans were very loyal and passionate, respect to them its a shame their reputation has been tarnished since the oil money and a stadium which is too big. Coming from a life long utd fan here.
Such an Extraordinary club to watch and such a great youth system in place for the future, a club to watch out for producing some great talents like Aduriz and Herrera.
Fuck off
It's funny though, Herrera came from Zaragoza's academy not Athletic's.
Inaki Williams is the next big name in basque football as well
Javi Martinez and Arteta are also fom the basque area
+berbafan67 arteta went through la masia tho didn't he?
Aúpa athletic de Bilbao. Humilde y poderoso equipo...Saludos de un bético .
Probably the best looking stadium built in the last 10 years!
occiBK31 and they don't own it. A number of private companies do.
It got the Best Sport Building in the World award (among others)...It is idd stunning imo.
But why is everybody speaking spanish?
@@yannick245 why not?
I was born in Bilbao and support athletic since I was born its awesome that copa 90 did this video
Con cantera y aficion, no hace falta importacion. Aupa Athletic!
Athletic Bilbabo and Southampton have amazing academies, I didn't know they had a shirt connection apart from the colors.
Fun story, indeed; and somehow related to Sunderland workers too!
Special mention, when Le God, Matt Le Tissier, received the "One Club Man" award from Athletic Club. I am sure he felt at home receiving the award in San Mames with the fans showing they're respect to such a special player. I have always seen my favourite player, Julen Guerrero as a mirror of Matt, showing that passion and love to the club, not to mention the quality of both. Cheers!
Wow, mis respetos, desde México
CHOP gracias desde Bilbao. De verdad.
Gracias. En México tenéis al Chivas. Una filosofía parecida. Y rojiblanco tb.
They have always been in the highest spanish league. With only players from their region!Thats incredible!!!And won a large amount of throphies!Wow.
That is unique in the world.Never heard of something similar. My profound respect!!
That worths more than any CL Title
Best team in the world!!! Aupa Athletic! Zu zara nagusia!!!
"Athletic Club Bilbao invest resources bringing young talents".....What a smart comment. I'm totally agree
GORA EUSKAL HERRIA! con admiracion desde Chile
El Athletic de Bilbao uno de los clubes míticos del fútbol español. Una escuadra de mucha tradición y señorío.
I just became a fan of this club. Amazing 🤯
I keep telling people. Dortmund, Athletic, Southampton, Sporting Portugal, they are still successful even though they don't win titles often.
I have never been to the new San Mamés, but I went to the old one, it was the first time I felt chills entering a football stadium.
I know that feeling too. Lucky us
Southampton and Sporting (Dortmund not so much) have good football academies but so does Barcelona, Atalanta, West Ham, Ajax, Feyenoord, Olympique Lyon and Schalke 04. NONE of them has anything in common with what Athletic is and stands for.
one of my favorite teams, the unique transfer policy made them interesting to play with in FM
Caver Ramos Atletico de Madrid was born as a second team of Ath. Club, hence they're name, "Atletico".
I've always loved the way they bring their players through the ranks. Never spend much in the transfer markets, and more about producing local talent through their academies. When it comes to selling players, man are they strict with their prices? They definitely know how to run their club. Keep that identity, not many other clubs are like Bilbao. Great documentary, I've loved every piece you guys uploaded (Oviedo, Eibar, etc.).
Mad respect to Copa90, and Athletic Bilbao.
Tim Choe they steal the best players from the other Basque clubs. Open your eyes.
Alan Dunne ... bakarrik falta jatzu Gora Erreala esatea.....
@@alandunne2728 robar?
I've been waiting for them to do something on Bilbao for a long time.
As an Athletic fan who is half Basque its amazing to see people find out about our club
Es que el Athletic Club es un equipo reconocido mundialmente y un grande de España.
Gora Athletic 💕... forever
Respeto, y respeto, eso nos lo hemos ganado.
Risas y lágrimas ....y cantidades industriales de
orgullo.
Aupa !
Irabazi ala ez (bost axola)
Beti bihotzean (nun dagoen bizia,,,jeje )
Muxuak!!!
So many fans (particularly glory seekers) think supporting a club is about trophies. It’s not, it’s about your city coming together to cheer 11 players who represent you in the best way possible. Arab, American, Chinese owners will never understand this. I hope Athletic never change and I hope more clubs adopt their approach in some form
It's so hard to know that Aduriz retired.
Forever being hardcore fan of Athletic club de bilbao!!! Even i don't have basque's origin my heart is always for this club.
❤❤❤ from indonesia 🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩
#aupaathletic
Best club in the world. Aupa Athletic
Laurence Wood not even best club in Basque region
@@alandunne2728 Athletic. 8 leagues. 24 cups. 3 supercopas. Always in first division. 2 finals of cup Uefa.
Real Sociedad also is a great club but it has 2 leagues, 2 copas and 1 supercopas. And has been in the second division for many years. There is no comparison.
Someday I will go to San Mames.... Aupa Athletic from Venezuela!
Cheers from a Gremio supporter.
A unique club. A true football club.
Aupa Athletic!!!
Used to love playing for them in Fifa 14 career mode
Here after Aduriz announced his retirement.
Even though you tourtured us at times, you will be missed.
they are opposite to all plastic clubs like rb leipzig
i admire Athletic and basques a lot
Gora beti euskal herria ! ❤️
What a wonderfull honest, loyal and strong people this basques! KEEP YOUR FIGHT ON. A REAL FOOTBAL CLUB.
Inaki Williams is a top, top player
Mustafa Saleem if he was good, he wouldn't be in that dump
amazing club with this sort of policy & also successful as well...a club to admire🙏
Been waiting ages for this!
Onore a voi!! Saluti dall'Italia!!
Really close connection with my team Southampton. People over here have a lot of respect for Bilbao.
I suppose you know the origin of our tshirt, isn't? Really is yours.. ☺
Watching 11 basque boys competing...this is our title, wow. Best club in the world !
These r the kind of teams I have ultimate respect for as a juve fan
Amazing club. I have so much respect for them. I wish more clubs did something like this.
Greetings & respect from Wales ⚒🍺⚽
Even if I don't support them, I can't help but respect Athletic Club for the loyalty to their society and citizens
At the old stadium the atmosphere was mad!
I swear it!
The "Herri Norte" ultras group makes the atmosphere great and if you add that almost the whole stadium is chanting and shouting every time you can see that San Mames is not a common stadium.
I am basque and I am very happy they finally did a video on this. Only wish more people here in the states would know about them
