This is not something you can "consider", it's something you feel organically. It's something that would link to a club with traditions and a philosophy like Bilbao. Mage, big-spending super clubs attract bandwagon type fans. Not the kind of fans that would support a culturally-rich club like Bilbao, where winning is second to the tradition .. and where "wins" are garnered away from winning football matches as well. My favorite club in the Spanish Liga for the last 10 years. This is true football - defending your identity and keeping your traditions alive. And the best thing about their new stadium is that they collected all the money needed by donations from the fans and companies based in the Basque region.

About Laporte: He is not basque (well, he had a basque grandmother), but can play for Athletic Club Bilbao because he was scouted on a basque football team called Aviron Bayonais (on the french part of the Basque Country). Question solved.
They expand their borders if there aren't enough players in Basque Country using the most strange reasons to justify themselves. That's why people like Llorente (La Rioja) or Amorebieta (Venezuela) had been playing there.

Born OR formed in basque football, understanding basque as the territory where basque language is spoken: the basque country itself plus Navarra plus the three provinces of the french basque country.

We don't bend the philosophy, we just made it open to local talent which means people born in Euskal Herria (including the French part), descendants of basques such as Amorebieta, and talent from near-by areas who love the team, believe in our values and are up to being trained in the academy, just like Llorente. That is not justifying, that is just how it is.
I visited Bilbao to see the Guggenheim,and I can seriously say that I think their stadium was a better piece of architecture than the Guggenheim.
Even as a Barcelona supporter (born in Badalona) Athletic Bilbao is just wonderful. I got a lot of respect for them.

Soy de Perú y estoy en los 40s, ahora puedo expresarlo pero desde muy niño para mi era extraño sentir una conexión con esa camiseta y el nombre del club cuando veía los pocos partidos que aquí se transmitían cuando jugaban con los equipos de Madrid o Barcelona , Hasta que fui creciendo y fui consciente que tenía sangre Vasca por mi madre y entonces comprendí que esa conexión no era solo por lo bonito del uniforme y por la entrega al limite con la que jugaban. Es esa filosofía y tradicion que conservan con lo Vasco la esencia misma de la conexión emocional que tuve desde la primera vez que vi un juego suyo en mi niñez. Fútbol con mucha sustancia!

This is how every club should be, tiny clubs loyal to there village/towns, small/medium clubs to their region and big clubs to their nation/wider region. No more ridiculous transfer fees, players who don't have passion or a worth ethic. The potential for an incredible level of passionate and competitive football is there, and Bilbao are the proof that you don't have to lose a lot of quality for it.

Thanks Copa 90. I really enjoyed this documentary. It was special for me because my great great grandfather was from Biscay. He migrated to the new world and that's how our generation continued. He passed down an ikurina(the red,green and white flag). I love the club and its policies and even though it may be small, I appreciate the connection that I have with this region. #denokbatera 👊🏻☝️

I love this club, its so amazing how they form their team just with players from the basque country :o And their youth teams are really good too, Athletic Bilbao is the only club from the Primera Divsión which has a second team (Athletic Bilbao B) in the Segunda División! My spanish teacher in school asked us what our favorite club is in Spain, everyone said Real or Barca but for me it's Athletic Bilbao for years now :) I wish i could be in Bilbao once to see a match of Athletic in the beautiful San Mamés.

Special mention, when Le God, Matt Le Tissier, received the "One Club Man" award from Athletic Club. I am sure he felt at home receiving the award in San Mames with the fans showing they're respect to such a special player. I have always seen my favourite player, Julen Guerrero as a mirror of Matt, showing that passion and love to the club, not to mention the quality of both. Cheers!

Always my team of choice on FM. There is a dark side to why they are the only cantera side in the basque region and not Real Sociedad for example, but as a Southampton fan and the link with us, and the fact they do only sign local talent and are still in the top flight alongside Barça and Real after a century makes this club so deep in my heart. A beautiful club that really embodies the true meaning of the word "club".

Amazing achievement for a club with such a limited pool to pick from and never relegated, never mind the silverware they've managed to lift in a league that has some of the World's biggest and richest clubs.Shows what pride and passion in your province can do. Respect to Athletic.
Blood bought Big Phil R it's not all that different from the other mid table and relegation fodder clubs in Spain. They just aren't as rigid as Bilbao.

I know about Athletic Bilbao since they hired Jupp Heynckes. They had this Player Julen Guerrero that I really liked. I live in a Region of Bavaria that is known as Upper, under and middle Frankonia. I always thaught that it would be great if the club 1 FC Nürnberg would share the same philosophy like Athletic Bilbao bc I always knew that the majority of the players they hire from all over don't really care and don't know about who we are.
I know that concept would be loved bc it would be players that really represent our colors and us.
You certainly understand what Athletic Club stands for, it's all about caring and representation.
Btw, we older fans still have a lot of respect and great memories of Heynckess' two stints here in Bilbao. He's always been admired here, even when he said once "It's like I'm driving a Volkswagen in Formula 1" to compare Athletic to the rest of La Liga clubs, lol

Southampton and Sporting (Dortmund not so much) have good football academies but so does Barcelona, Atalanta, West Ham, Ajax, Feyenoord, Olympique Lyon and Schalke 04. NONE of them has anything in common with what Athletic is and stands for.

So many fans (particularly glory seekers) think supporting a club is about trophies. It’s not, it’s about your city coming together to cheer 11 players who represent you in the best way possible. Arab, American, Chinese owners will never understand this. I hope Athletic never change and I hope more clubs adopt their approach in some form

I've always loved the way they bring their players through the ranks. Never spend much in the transfer markets, and more about producing local talent through their academies. When it comes to selling players, man are they strict with their prices? They definitely know how to run their club. Keep that identity, not many other clubs are like Bilbao. Great documentary, I've loved every piece you guys uploaded (Oviedo, Eibar, etc.).
