TbT asks: Does size matter? Does barrel length affect power? If so, how much?

Extra length up to a point, makes extra power in pcp, but imo when barrels go beyond 21inch then form has to be factored in to you shooting.👍

My AS 2250 crosman went up with the 2260 rabbit stopper barrel on it . a bit spindly but made it a good short range lightweight Rabbit rifle.

Im curious how the different rifling in the barrels effected the results

I'm tuning two break barrels a xisco xs 25 and a Gamo big cat 1000. I will be cutting the barrels to 13 inches and attaching silencers.

I learned this lesson after swapping barrels on my ld rat catcher. The 24'' barrels made it past 15flbs so I settled on an 18'' to keep it legal

It depends in firearms what powder is used .slow powder long barrel .fast powder short .
In springers 1:27 22 cm is most the point where more lenght does not much .a short barrel is more accurat .because its stiffer .and the pellet is leaving sooner the barrel

It absolutely matters with powder burning guns. But I don't think there's much difference in air rifles. 97K and prosport barrels are only around 11.0" and they make great velocity. I don't have any experience with PCP's, so I know nothing about them.

Nick I would like you to take this a little further specifically in search of the optimal barrel length for sub 12 fpe air rifles in .22 and .177. I am assuming there is a perfect length of barrel for both calibres where drag is least prevalent and power is effected least yet accuracy is not compromised. Carbines are super popular these days but are they optimal?

Thanks Nick, I'd not known the actual increase, I knew there was a good amount of power gained, but the figures speak for themselves . In police circles , 38 special is not regarded as a very good man stopper, I guess when the perp is drugged out of his mind on some of the stuff today, not a lot of hand guns will bring him down, unless its an instant fatal shot , so , clearly a police 38 special in 5 inches or longer is a good gun / load .

    And the airguns??

    • @Beesa10

A longer barrel will give greater velocity, this has been tested with UK spring rifles in the past (by Gerald Cardew) but it was found that the pellet's acceleration occurs mostly within the first 10" (25cm) so carbine style springers lose very little available velocity for having a shortened barrel. A longer barrel is only a little bit more efficient at utilising the expanding air. But a longer barrel does add some weight to the front of the rifle, may make the shot cycle feel smoother, helps aiming with traditional iron sights (sight radius is increased) and it acts as a longer cocking lever.

Great stuff I understand that with the lack of combustion it won't make a difference with air rifles, but knowing the sweet spot of improved accuracy over friction drag would be interesting 👍
