There's a bit more to this and predominantly having to do with the Dark Triad (narcissism, Machiavellianism, psychopathy). These traits can be found attractive to women. For instance, one UK study found that the more partners women had, the more the desired a narcissistic one. Today, narcissism is also highly rewarded, and has furthermore become rather common. Women also tend to find regular men boring, but this is in part because those higher in the Tetrad harbor an unnatural gift allowing they to scan people to gain information which gives them the upper hand. This can be used to manipulate, gain s*xual access, etc. Case in point: It's known that psychopaths are highly successful, even in settings wherein they're being kept, at sleeping with the professional staff who have been trained in their psychology and how manipulative they can be. This makes sense as these traits are thought of in the research to serve the function of short-term mating success. In a competition between, say, a psychopath (genetic), and a man who was raised to be a people pleaser-perhaps due to being raised in a narcissistic household wherein he was not allowed to have boundaries-the psychopath will win with women in likely most cases today.

Women don't want nice; they want intriguing masculinity. The modern message is that men should basically act like women to attract women - e.g. be nice, be helpful, be friendly. This presents you as a friend, not a lover. In the same way men are attracted to femininity, women are attracted to masculinity. They might say otherwise, but attraction isn't reasoned, it's instinctual. You don't have to be toxic, a bully, etc - but you do have to be masculine, if you want to be naturally attractive to females.
I’m a woman and I like nice. I’ve been with my husband for 25 years now. We met as teens and he tried being toxically masculine with me. That didn’t work because I’m naturally kind & expect the same from my partner. When he realised this behaviour was going to end things, he changed and we’ve had a happy relationship ever since. We do business together, make every plan together while he can still do his man things with his mates because I don’t cage him. I believe humans should add value and not change people. Choose the type of person you want. Don’t choose a beautiful person and then try to mould them into what you want. That’s my philosophy.
