    Say Hello, Wave Goodbye Lyrics:
Standin' in the door of the Pink Flamingo cryin' in the rain
It was a kind of so-so love
And I'm gonna make sure it doesn't happen again
You and I had to be the standing joke of the year
You were a run-around, a lost and found and not for me, I feel
Take your hands off me, hey
I don't belong to you, you see
And take a look in my face for the last time
I never knew you, you never knew me
    Say hello goodbye
    Say hello and wave goodbye
We tried to make it work
You in a cocktail skirt and me in a suit but it just wasn't me
    You're used to wearing less
And now your life's a mess, so insecure you see
Well I put up with all the scenes
And this is one scene that's going to be played my way
Take your hands off me, hey
I don't belong to you, you see
And take a look in my face, for the last time
I never knew you, you never knew me
    Say hello, goodbye
    Say hello and wave goodbye
    Say hello and wave goodbye
Under the deep red light I can see the make up slidin' down
Well hey little girl you will always make up
So take off that unbecoming frown
As for me, well I'll find someone who's not goin' cheap in the sales
    A nice little housewife
Who'll give me a steady life and not keep going off the rails
Take your hands off me, hey
I don't belong to you, you see
And take a look in my face, for the last time
I never knew you, you never knew me
    Say hello, goodbye
    Say hello and wave goodbye
    Say hello and wave goodbye
    Say hello and wave goodbye
    Wave goodbye
    Say hello and wave goodbye
    Say hello, wave goodbye
    Goodbye
    Say goodbye
    Say goodbye
We were born before the waves
    Who are we to understand?
We were born before the waves
    Say goodbye
Through the rain, hail, sleet and snow
    Say goodbye
Get on the train, train, train
    And say goodbye
    Say goodbye
    Say goodbye
    Say goodbye
In the wind and the rain now, darling
    Say goodbye
In the wind and the rain now, darling

I introduced my father-in-law to David Gray in 2011. My wife and mother and father-in-law saw David Gray at Ryman Auditorium live in August 2014. We had a blast, but my father-in-law really, really loved seeing David Gray live. My father-in-law developed a very aggressive form of dementia in 2023. The last time I saw him when he was conscious was in the hospital. Nurses were coming in his room one after the other. He was very agitated by the nurses checking his temp, changing his iv, taking his blood pressure. By this point he was not able to communicate with us. I started playing David Gray on my phone and he instantly calmed as we listened to the music. Say Hello Wave Good-bye on the set list. About twenty seconds into this song, he turned his head and looked me in the eye. It was a sweet moment. One I will never forget. I was fighting back tears, but it was obvious I was able to lose it. He just looked at me in the eyes. I was telling him everything will be ok. It's like he was saying to me it's going to be ok and it was like he was saying good-bye. My wife wanted to bring him to our home to die. He died on July 17, 2024, surrounded by family with David Gray music playing. Rest in peace Fletcher. You were one of a kind. You will be missed. Thanks for being like a father to me.

This song reminds me of a woman i spent some time with after the break up of my marriage some 20 odd years ago now.
We would give each other some comfort, as she had been through some hard times aswell.
We would often play this song, so i learned to play it on the guitar and we would sing it together.
I left to come back up north where i am from after 6 months or so. I found out from a friend that she had died about 4 years later. I only spent 6 months with her, but she really helped me in the aftermath of my marriage, and i helped her with what she was going through.
I always think of her with this song, and the time we spent together. 🙏

David you are a true talent and this song speaks to many men. Who thought they had their forever. And discovered. It was not. I have met so many countless male friends who experienced the same. And in their Take Two, have found someone who didn't betray them, who truly loved them. That is a testimony to those who betrayed their true love, who discarded them so selfishly, and many times, their entire family. To all the men of the world who get to meet their actual true love, after such a failure, not of their choosing. All the best to those men. There is hope. There is true love out there.

I used to listen to White Ladder a lot and this song in particular. It's a very weird experience listening again after so many years. 20 years ago I felt so connected to the main character, but with a fresh perspective the protagonist of the song sounds quite manipulative and mean. "A nice little housewife, who'll give me a steady life", "I'll find someone who's not going cheap in the sales", "your life's a mess, so insecure you see". It seems like he is projecting so much of his own anger and sadness on this other character.
It makes me reevalute my past relationships, and one relationship in particular. I used to think she was the one driving me crazy and not the other way around and now I'm not so sure. I guess we were just both not good for eachother. After 12 years of big ups and downs I've managed to cut ties with this woman a couple of years ago but she is still on my mind once every while and while we could never be friends again, I really hope that she is very happy and is living her best life.. And I hope she is safe and in love..
Ultimately listening to this song again after so many years gives me a feeling of sadness. Where has life gone all these years? I guess I am also happy to experience that I have changed over these last twenty years (which is good) and have gained more insight, self-reflection and patience...
