    About the music:
The concerto’s three movements run without a break, each being separated from the other by means of a trumpet fanfare. After the briefest of orchestral introductions, but one not devoid of a certain drama, the piano bursts in and the first movement continues in tempestuous mood for a while until the piano introduces a more graceful idea. When the orchestra plays this new theme the piano flutters around happily, and throughout the movement the piano and orchestra indulge in a kind of non-combative dialogue, never competing with each other for dominance, but sharing the good ideas in equal measure.
Among Mendelssohn’s best-loved piano pieces are several sets of “Songs Without Words”, and much of the charming, song-like character of those pieces is found in the lyrical second movement, based on an enchanting theme initially announced by the lower strings. Mendelssohn’s best music is often characterised by a lightness of mood and an almost bubbly texture, typified by this concerto’s tuneful, energetic, and disarmingly innocent third movement. At the age of 22, when he wrote this work, Mendelssohn was well into his maturity as a composer, but his musical ideas were still infectiously youthful.

Alexandra Dovgan, what you have achieved in your 11 years of life is so much more than many people can achieve in a life time, you are a unique talent and prodigy, a genius I should say, you play with the wisdom of an adult and the playfulness and energy of a young child, the technique is superb, absolute, and your musicality that of an old soul, I am in awe of what I just saw, and congratulate you from the bottom of my heart for your talent and hard work, you, your parents and your teachers. You are such a joy to watch, may God continue to bless you in this road you have taken so passionately, and be a blessing to all that listen to you. Your fingers are flying with an unmatched technique. Bravo young girl!

Easy? Sort of. The main parts are learned, the fast 16th note 4 piece runs are same method for all 4 notes, just sharps/flats and accidental changes, if you have a 4 piece line with changes then you study that exact line more than the rest. It all works out in the end!

Not as hard as you would think. When you practice a piece for many hundreds of hours looking at sheet music and reinforcing the phrases and rhythms of each movement it becomes second nature. We did Beethovens first symphony in high school which is significantly longer. By concert day after practicing daily going movement by movement we had it committed to memory. I can't speak as to the methods of a virtuoso but I can imagine they can't be much different.

0:19 - Molto Allegro con fuoco
    7:26 - Andante
12:37 - Presto (This part she plays so clearly and it's one of my fav excerpts of the piano repetoire)
After hearing many interpretations of this piece, I do think this is the most masterfully interpreted. The main voice of the piano just takes the stage when it makes an entry and the clearness of Alexandras playing is quite nearly superhuman. She doesn't just race through the whole thing but plays each part with tasteful delight and sophistication. Absolutely amazing for her age. Quite surely a Ling Ling...

Indeed, and just imagine, despite having rehearsed with her, hearing this power, nuance, and elegance pouring out behind you - must have been mind boggling .. Very telling is the opening crescendo - it is relentless building in strength - more so than, I think, other orchestras Alexandra has played it with, and she matches it with amazing power and authority. It conveys immediately that there will be no soft peddling by either party, but a balanced account.

I have watched this older video (2 years ????) and the little star she was then, has blossomed into the MEGA STAR she is now, on the way to become an entire Constellation! Alexandra will continue to get larger and larger until she will become a little Universe that plays the piano! How can she pack so much talent in 80 pounds is beyond me...
Thank you for the joy you bring into our little tortured souls. The WORLD LOVES YOU!

And yet she doesn’t look too happy, I saw her three weeks ago…
she left Russia with her father when the war started, and can‘t go back for now to see her mother and little brother. She lives in Spain now with her dad and has online classes with her teacher at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory.
I am so so sorry that this wonderful girl (and uniquely gifted talent) has to face the consequences of politics 😢
Is it a coincidence that she is playing „heavy“, sad pieces of Schumann and Brahms now?

I'm not necessarily the most learned when it comes to classical music, but there's just something about the way she plays that speaks to some sort of joy and whimsy, the expressions on her face and the little bobbing and bouncing motions she makes as she plays makes the listener feel that she's totally engrossed in the music. It reflects in the way she plays. It's so much more expressive and varied in tone than what I've seen from the pianists I've gone to see who are triple her age. Damn. She's young, still, so hopefully she has a stellar and fruitful career! Would love to see her play in this person, I'm sure this is even more entrancing to witness when you're actually there.

You can have all the heart you want, but without sufficient means of expression the emotion just wont have any wings to fly with.
