As a dbacks fan I remember saying "holy shit we got Burnes" quite loudly when I got the notification late last night, pretty sure people in my house weren't too happy about that
Poor Kris Bryant, went from one of the best 3yr stretches to start a career… Minor League POY, ROY, MVP and WS Champ to wasting away on the IL in Denver 😢
Honestly, playing in the NL west and not being in California or Colorado is probably a nice gig. In-division travel is short, the tax situation isn’t as burdensome, and expectations for that team are never THAT high. It’s a place wear you can live comfortably, be appreciated for excelling or disappear quietly otherwise. Good move in my opinion.
I think a massive factor in the Burnes deal that you didn't hit on was his family, who already live in Arizona. Burnes has 3 young children, which was a major determining aspect in the contract negotiations.
@@PhoenixRiser I’m glad your team now understands financial business 😊, while the O’s who just lost him don’t. I hope y’all can catch LA again and beat them.
People keep pointing out Burnes’ declining strikeout rate while conveniently leaving out his also declining walk rate and the fact that after he made some adjustments in August of last year his strikeout rate went back up to 27%
I agree the tax man has the final say in what is left in your banking account. So yes if we hear so and so got more money to play for NY then Miami TB Texas Houston ext. you better look at the whole picture. They may make more in places like New York but after taxes it's totally different.
As an orioles fan I wish we re-signed him, as we don’t really go big on pitching, or go big on FA at all. Interested to see how Sugano pans out next season.
@@travis6694 rangers won WS too so did the marlins yrs back, let alone lost in WS, too many 1 hit wonder….as along as dodgers are here AZ going no where
Just a little critique personally I don’t see strikeout percentage drop of 10% being bad especially when you take into account and assume he used sticky stuff and was getting used to pitching without it. I would’ve liked to see you compare the ERA, all the per 9 stats walks to strikeouts etc as they would be a better indicator of regression
he didn't regress, Corbin got good last season. More wins, better ERA, more innings, lowered his reliance on striking out guys. He has a bright future deep into his 30s if he keeps any of this up.
I don’t think Burnes’s K-rate should be of concern. As most pitchers lose velocity as they age, they need to adapt to a different style of pitching in order to be effective. I think a better metric is WHIP and Burnes’s WHIP hasn’t escalated much over the past few seasons - ‘21 - 0.94 ‘22 - 0.965 ‘23 - 1.069 ‘24 - 1.096 Also between ‘23 to ‘24, his BB/9innings went down, his ERA improved, and his K/BB ratio went up. So, he still has control but is just allowing more contact to get outs. The DBacks also made the fewest errors in the majors, so he’ll have that working in his favor..He’ll be a fine Ace-level addition to a staff and, assuming he has the personality, will only help their young pitchers in Merrill Kelly and Brandon Pfaadt. And perhaps E-Rod can show Burnes around and explain to him why he & his family are more comfortable in Arizona as opposed to LA.
It makes sense. D-Backs are waaay better than the Giants. D-Backs were in the WS in 2023. If I were Burnes, and his family is in Arizona, this makes perfect competitive sense. Not sure why everyone is so "shocked"
Wonder how much of this signing, from a DBacks perspective, is to show the state how serious they are about investing in the team and remaining competitive in order to get financial assistance for their ballpark
As a giants fan this one sucks but at the same time with 2 year opt out yeah I'd pass too. Buster seems to not want to deal with opt outs which is good because the fans don't want to have players leave so soon.
Crazy winter. When the stock market crashes in the first half of 2025, everything will change. Signing up this winter will be so smart. It will affect signing in the future so that is something players need to think about too. Burnes' future with the D-Backs will be useless when they can't sign anyone in the future.
He did one a couple of weeks ago, in which he correctly called Bregman "delusional" because of his asking price. As an Astros fan since the 1960s, I laughed, and agreed.
The Dbacks learned nothing from the Bumgarner signing. Burnes regression looks a lot like Jake Arrieta before he signed with the Phillies. 2016 Arrieta and 2023 Burnes seasons are eerily similar, and so was their decline the next season before getting big contracts from another team.
The Burnes is contract is the best of the pitchers is the best deal. Yes his numbers went down. I would argue he’s struggled because if trade and contract talks
The guy is a horse 🐎.Even if he regresses he puts up innings every year.He doesn’t throw a bunch of hard sliders that tax his elbow he will be durable for years. At worst they got an expensive Lance Lynn at best they got an Ace for the next few years either way it’s a good thing for a team that needs to compete against the Dodgers.Kudos to their ownership for trying
If I were fried who said no to Texas I’d be kicking myself, dude legitimately would’ve had Jacob DeFreakingGrom as his mentor, kept tons of money due to Arlington being cheaper than New York, no snow so bro would’ve had an easier life for his family at least. Fort Worth Texas isn’t perfect by any means but bro literally turned down sunbelt paradise (Sidney Sweeney) for washed aged high traffic city (J-Lo)
All of you saying they it’s for taxes literally have no evidence it’s was all from a Bob Nightingale twee that all that said was “Taxes lower in AZ then Tor or CA” but have no proof that was the main reason, he probably chose to stay where his family lives, y’all need to stop injecting stories about players choosing to play at certain places because of taxes unless stated.
The taxes that seem to bother you so much pay for better schools, hospitals, culture, and public transportation, to name just a few. Those states with the lower state taxes have insanely high property taxes, sales taxes, insurance, awful schools, cultures, and political negatives. You don't know Fried or Degrom, and you only inject your political bias into their personality or preferences as to why they wanted to play for a particular team apart from what their take-home pay and lifestyles might be.
Exactly I’m tied of hearing all of these people thinking “Taxes” are a reason a lot of these players play in lower tax states, because we honestly don’t know their reason for their decision, unless the players says the reason the chose was for taxes then ok, but if a player doesn’t say say then don’t try and make a story that it’s a lot about taxes.
It is painful being a Jays fan. The Jays are going to be bad for at least a decade. Their reputation with players around the league and player agents are tarnished. The Jays are never going to land a big free agent ever again. The biggest contract the franchise will ever have given out was 150/6 for Springer. I honestly fear that the Jays are going to just let everyone walk and endup being cheapskates. The Jays are going to use this as an excuse to not spend and are going to have razor-thin payrolls going forward. The Jays are just going to become a feeder team for the rest of the league.
