Hi Folks,
This is Dan, let me show you step by step on how I build stuff each week including my CB750 Cafe Racer & the (Honda Scrambler/Tracker build on a budget challenge) SUBSCRIBE to follow my future builds, I'm based in Australia.

I did a general machining course at TAFE. Just one night a week for two terms. We learned basic mill and lathe. Was very helpful having an industry professional teacher to ask questions and get a help past the beginner mishaps quickly. Knowing the basic math for spindle speed, material type, diameter and cut depth, and feed rate etc is awesome.
Definitely a great idea if I could find that extra time 😄
Happy Birthday Dan! Congratulations one the new machine. Looking forward to learning with you on future projects. Thanks for sharing!
Best brekkie vid so far Dan . Belated Happy Birthday mate .
Well as you say 1st practice project always a learning curve but your the guy that moves on from little mistakes to perfection. Great idea for a project I would have clear coated it and kept it shiney but blacked out it matches the Helmet .
Enjoy playing with the mill and love the little spacers on the lathe , your getting that down to perfection .
I just picked up a 79 honda cx500 today! You're budget build will be played a lot while I build mine!
That is fantastic brother I’m so excited for you. The journey will be amazing, Make sure you take lots of photos or videos

Holy crap. A RUclipsr who isn’t perfect !
❤ awesome . .and thank you for being “REAL” coz I’m nearly at this point myself(learning to mill) . Self taught thus far with machining equipment, 😁 similar learning process by the looks of things.
Cheers
Great stuff. I like your general attitude towards learning new things. Congratulations on the new mill as well.
Thank you mate, I hope you enjoyed the video it was really fun to make :)
Great looking piece at the end! Congrats! Can't wait for my mini mill to arrive 🙂
Awesome work, Dan!
It looks amazing! Nice work (as always) 😁👍
So excited to see what you make with the new tool! What a handy thing to have, I’m definitely jealous!
Thank you mate, this is something that I’ve wanted for many many years, it’s a lot bigger than I need but I will get Better with more practice and hopefully attack bigger projects on it
Great work Dan.
Hi, great buy Dan, and good start , looks lovely. Nothing better than invest in tools ...lol . enjoy it . thanks . Gus
Having never touched a Mill before my apprenticeship I understand how daunting that must have been. Considering that, you done a fantastic job Dan! Bloody well done!
Get your hands on some Screw Jacks. They'll help support the underside of any overhanging material.
Is that what those little things are for?
I’ve seen people make them as a project but I didn’t know what they were actually for. Thanks for the tip I’ll definitely get some.
Really enjoy your videos Dan! They've been a great source of inspiration for me as I'm starting my '78 Yamaha XS650 Brat build. I appreciate you for the way you break things down for guys like me that are new to the game. Keep doing what you're doing!
Thank you Matt I’m glad they are going to good use and you are enjoying them
@@CafeRacerGarage They've become my go-to watch for my downtime at work. They've really helped me think through some of the things with my own build. Even if I'm not directly using your ideas, your ideas help me to think through what I'm going to do. Your builds are clean and in my opinion, well done. If you ever make your way to the Michigan USA, beers on me haha. Cheers
Happy Birthday Dan, bloody excellent first go with mill drill mate. Lots to learn with that one, ride safe. Cheers
Thanks mate, it was definitely a fun and educational adventure:)
The trick to having a level floored garage/shed is to cut drain lines in the floor that are angled. This allows the floor to be as level as possible, even grinding level accuracy and any water will drain down the cut lines to if neccesary a sump. The angle only needs to be slight to work and down the shortest run.
I just bought a welder...I can't keep watching this because it makes me want to spend more on tools
Haha 😂 I would love to say sorry but you and I both know once you have the tools you never regret it.
Stunning custom
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAN!!!
Wow that is awesome. And happy birthday.
Pretty cool, Dan. I’ve never come across a machine like that. You certainly seem right at home with it already! Soon it will be riding weather here again... can’t wait!
Stay safe there... 🏍👍🏍
Thanx mate, it’s definitely something that takes a hands on expense to learn, I’ve watched many machining channels and it’s when you make stuff that you learn and remember I think.
Ride safe brother.
Make some aluminum wedges to level the machine.
Wow.
That´s a proper machine and a very good first experience.
Congrats.
Thank you mate. It’s definitely big enough for me I think 🤔
this channel is turning into This Old Dan :D ... and i cant be happier :D .. soon, old dads start to crowd around your shop cuz of all the nice machines :D
Nicely done mate. Looking forward watching the evolution.
Thank you Jim it was fun to make
Awesome video mate
Nice one bro. The stand looks awesome. Cant wait to see your future projects.
Thank you mate. Currently planning the next one as we speak. Thank you for your help rearranging the garage, rigging and positioning the machine 😁
Great fun Dan, I just about bought a used one a week ago......but I was too slow and some else beat me to it! Thanks for sharing.
They seem to be getting more and more popular. I could be these guys on RUclips inspiring people to have a go lol 😂 😂. (In a sarcastic voice) I would never do something like that lol 😂
I want one of those trailers it was delivered on 😮
Yet another RF45! Congratulations! I own a clone, too. It serves me well! Now use your mill and build a CNC. That's what you really want for shaped aluminum parts.
Hi mate. I have a machine shop in QLD and I've recently just started a RUclips Channel working on bikes that have one foot in the grave. If you want to get consistent results on your milling machine make sure it is level and also fixed to the ground to minimise vibration. Always support the work with machinist jacks or similar if you have overhang. Also make sure gibs are adjusted correctly and that you lock the table in the directions your not using. IE the height in this case. Speeds and feeds can be found on the internet with HP rated to your machine. Anyway you will work it out as you use it but I hope a few of these tips will help in the future to minimise costly mistakes. Cheers Rick MTR
Wow that is awesome help mate, thank you so much
Great demonstrational video, top job, very professional in my books. I'm looking at buying a metal lathe & vertical milling machine from the same mob. Cheers from brizzy.
Dude where are you? Love the new toys!
Hi Dan, In the process of researching milling machines I found your channel. As I am a hobbyist myself. Can you shed some light on the reason you chose this particular model. I would greatly appreciate the feed back. Cheers mate. Rob. QLD.
Great work, I have a similar garage, but no mill yet. Are you satisfied with the machine. Of interest what brand is your blaster. Which vice did you get for the mill. (death by a thousand questions) lol. Thanks.
Maaaaate awesome new tool for ya Birthday does life get any better. Just wondering how long til your knocking through that wall to get some more space. Got to be one of the best helmet holder going, great job. Happy Birthday Dan, hope ya knocking the froth off a couple of cold ones!!
Hey brother thank you for the birthday wishes:) iv got a few water issues I need to address on my property before I can make any extensions happen 🤦♂️ hope to soon tho
Also it was Easter so I had chocolate instead of beer lol 😂 they don’t mix that well haha
Hell yeah
That’s a sick machine! Can’t wait to see what you can create with it!. Side note: I’m wondering if you would be interested in offering up a little advice to me about starting a RUclips channel like yours. I have just started one myself after watching you for awhile. You’ve been a huge inspiration to me and just wondered if you’d ever be interested in emailing me and sharing some knowledge and maybe even collaborating somehow at some point.
I'd absolutely love to have a mill at some point! Mistakes are the best teachers as well. Looking forward to seeing more parts come out!
I was exactly that way only a few days ago and now comes the tooling and learning to go with it. What would you like to see me build next?
@Cafe Racer Garage It would be cool to see some brackets made, your DIY on brackets was pretty fun to watch. I'd be looking to build some big brake caliper brackets, engine mounts, and fork braces if I had one but that's because I build minis.
Cool video. I just got a similar mill, and my son (he's 5) has almost the same drill you started with. I pop a 6mm masonry bit in it for him, because in addition to drilling holes in wood, he likes to drill holes in dirt. They also tend to bend rather than break.
That’s awesome 👏
Great job bud 👍 next time clamp the piece to the mill bed and the results will be better👌great videos champ😀
Hi Dan, came across your video on the mill drill unboxing & setup the other day & just wanted to know where you got the wheeled black sub base plate from or is it a homemade one. Good video by the way, cheers mate...Bill
Hi. Thanks for the info. This is the exact mill I have. Merv from Adelaide
That’s awesome brother I’m sure it’s working well just like mine is.
These things will out live us by a long shot
Nice machine 👍 What alloy did you use for that part?
Ooooohh I want a mill so bad. Jealous man
Handy tip i know will help for the rest of your life
use masking tape cutting aluminium. mark your line on there and it acts as lubricant. you won’t need too clean of that wax, especially for welding. your blade will last ages too
Nice mill couple things to think about cutting aluminum no need for coolant if anything use air .take some Plexiglas lay it down on your bed cut so it fits around vise .on the outer ends take wood or aluminum little blocks put down in the groves an screw glass to them that well hold glass in place an make it alot easyer for clean up .
That’s actually a really good idea thank you. I ended up using a shop vacuum for clean up and WD40 for Coolant
I had the same manual drill back at my workshop 😅 grandfather and uncles were also wood workers back in the day.. I am also planning to buy a mill and a lathe for my projects but most of the budget friendly ones are labeled in chinese even the manuals..
A "roughing" end mill will take a lot of strain off of your machine and your cutting tool. It will take half the time as well. I can't wait to see what you make.
I still got my dads egg beater drill from the 70's. I Know you'll master that machine just like everything else m8 : )
Any way you could get the oil drainer to the left side. Oh happy belated B'day 🎂
Thank you mate :) yes I’m very grateful for the powerTool generation :)
The funny thing is I’m pretty sure these machines need to be levelled when you set them up correctly.
I have more need for manoeuver ability of the machine then that much precision.
Maybe eventually when I get better at using it I can level it out.
Have a great day brother 😁
Hi Dan, Happy Birthday...🌈🌈🌈
Thank you mate
What type of saw do you use to cut the aluminum?
Might want to buy some delrin plastic to practice on. It is a lot cheaper for mistakes
6:48 🤣😭💀
What's that you are drinking mate? Good progress. Good job.
That is really not bad for the first time on a mill! But here is something you could do different. I see it is on wheels. Don’t do that. Pick a fixed place where it will have its forever home and set it level. Only that way precision can be guaranteed and the machine working optimal. Same goed for the lathe. And sometimes you need to check and reset the levels again. I had to set my lathe level twice now as the concrete plates it sits on were settling into the sand underneath it
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼
When clamping a part like that, it is better to hold it down with a foot clamp secured into the mill table tee-slots rather than just depend on friction with the vise jaws to secure the part. The clamping force will slacken off as you mill the part and it becomes less stiff.....and that will decrease the friction and the part will shift...as you discovered. Live and learn as you say....
Wow kirain bikin apaan eh bikin cantolan helm keren banget bro
Everyday is a school day, that mill is awesome . Possibilities are pretty much endless now. At 7:20 are you still using the 2x48 belt with that toolarm?
Cheers for sharing our dreams.......
100 % right, in regards to the belt grinder, that is just an attachment for that machine to get Into the tight spots
@@CafeRacerGarage i can see how the extra wheel really helps, but i wasn't sure if you needed to go to the 2x60 belts. Might need to make one with the extra wheel. Cheers sir.
You should make a video on a bare bones wire harness.
Jammin department store tracks mate! Seriously nice work though.
Thanks for listening lol 😂
Awesome first go. What belt sander are you using?
Thank you mate, The belt grinder is actually built by an Australian company called 84 engineering he sells them globally and they are basically bullet-proof 👍
@@CafeRacerGarage they look awesome especially the way you've got a round pointy end. Almost like a spindle sander. But they cost as much as the mill I want to buy 😳 be a good mill lathe project
Are you planning on getting all the tools you need to entirely build a bike from scratch?
Can this machine mill steel?
I know this video is a while old, but, Spend some time at stefan gotteswinters channel. He has a very similar mill and is a master machinist. Grab some machinist jacks for overhanging parts and tighten up unused axes to clean up the chatter. Nice job though
Thank you mate
I hate to be a 'keyboard' engineer but your mill bit is for drill into the work piece you need to get and end mill bit
Thank you mate, I take any advice and tips I can get as I’m still very new to this and appreciate the help so thank you 🙏 😊
G'day mate, just saw your video for the first time and was about to reply but noticed it was 12 months old. Anyways, any "how to's", "why's" or "WTF's" about that HM-48B, yell out. Cheers, Michael 🇦🇺 Albury
Thank you mate, it m guessing you have one too?
@@CafeRacerGarage Yep, had it for a fair while now. It's had a lot of use and still like new. She's a pretty good machine.
Your going to need a bigger shed haha
How are you finding mill?
Absolutely love it. I have no issues with it whatsoever and highly recommend it
@@CafeRacerGarage thanks
That is a very expensive wall bracket ?
how do you like that machine?
It’s incredible and couldn’t be happier to be honest
@@CafeRacerGarage I'm in the market for one anything you don't like about it?
@@can5projects563 Just make sure you have the height to fit it apart from that I don’t have anything bad to say about it really. Are you getting it from Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne
