Grew up on Zelda. So it's always shocking to see people that don't know the basics of it. Then I have to remember. Just because I grew up on this game doesn't mean anyone else did.
Crazy part is Ryu played a lot of ALTTP. He recognizes the silver arrows, an item you have for the last bit of the game, but doesn't recognize blue/red armors or that white/shiney swords are good.
As a diehard Zelda fan with fond 80s memories of playing Zelda 1, watching this wad great. Every time you encountered a new enemy, it was cheerfully saying its name, and what's important about it. It was cool to seevyou improve with the gear upgrades. If you haf nabbed the White Sword, you might've killed the Wizzrobes faster. Watching this was so much fun. A lot of those enemies don't usually appear in dungeons, so it's neat to see them supporting each other, and using the room terrain to slow you down. Thank you very much for playing this for us! It's always fun when someone actually gives old-school Zelda some love!
I'd really love to see this combined with that mod that turns Doom into Zelda. I know there are probably a few games that are that idea already. Great stuff as always, Ryu!

Ryu, when Link stabs, he puts his shield away. Time the Octorocks so that their projectile bounce off your shield BEFORE using your sword (which makes you vulnerable).
Now I want to see you play the original Zelda but with no more knowledge than you have now. Figuring all of that out for the first time would be like my childhood all over again!

screaming “NOOOOO!” the entire time while watching. I suck at most games, but man, so frustrating to watch an OG Zelda challenge and have the player not know the items! I forgive you. It was actually a big part of the charm of the original game, figuring out the items, upgrades, etc!
The white sword was an upgrade it would have doubled your sword power and there is a huge eye boss that you need the whistle for. You can't hit the big eye. When you blow the whistle it breaks it into little eyes that can be killed.
Anyone else love watching Ryu discovering OG Zelda mechanics, however the not buying the sword upgrade kind of hurt me inside, none the less GG that was an awesome run!

The enemies dictate the drops, some of these Gels and other enemies don't drop stuff in the vanilla game so they won't drop here. The room can have a drop once cleared though, which is nice!

11:40 - In the original Zelda 1, blue potions restore your life one time. A red potion will restore your life once and then turn into a blue potion. So basically, a red potion is the equivalent of two blue potions.

Really enjoyed this, agree that it's a cool idea, even if it got tedious there towards the end. As far as suggestions for content for this channel - I'd LOVE to see you play through Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair. It's one of the best side-scrolling platformers I've ever played, and borrows heavily from the DKC trilogy in all the best ways. Seems right up your alley!
It doesn't work that way inside of dungeons. It IS required to defeat a certain boss though. I wonder if there is a logic where bosses do not appear unless you picked up the item that hurts them..
@@CarlosXPhone In z1 if you use it on the overworld the flute will take you to any dungeon you have cleared. In a dungeon it will only make one of the bosses vulnerable to damage. Ofc I don't know if it would have been given any additional functionality in a hack.
This is cool! But I'd sure want it to generate an actual dungeon. And for the color palette to change as you got into more dangerous territory. Ryus concern about boredom is, to my mind, not really a complaint about the length. It's about the lack of meaningful progression.
As you get deeper the enemies should have alternate attacks as well as a much higher mob density. Floor 100 should feel much different than floor 1, otherwise it's going to get boring.
It's been a while since you played Mega Man Maker; I'm on the dev team of that game, we have had many updates since you played and the kaizo scene is intense. Love to see what you could handle

It surely is a bit repetitive, the background is always the same color too: I'd recommend to play this in short sittings and just use save states to resume your progress the following time. Also, Ryu, I almost tore my hair off when you didn't buy the sword upgrade... No wonder the blue wizards took a million hits, you still had the wooden sword 😂 The blue ring, who turns you white, doubles your defense but does nothing to your attack
No. Just no. Even among repetitive roguelikes, this is bottom tier. And it's a horrible hack compared to every other hack I have seen. If you want to get into roguelikes, I'd suggest something like Hades, which you can play for hours on end without it getting stale.

I find myself playing far more old games than new ones. I'm not a great fan of repetitive roguelikes myself, but Hades was one of the few where you keep unlocking content and have interesting character interactions, which takes the edge off the repetition and covers the lack of level design that plagues most roguelikes. Frankly, most of the time "roguelike" is just code for "I/we can't be bothered to put effort into level design and storytelling". It's one of the red flags I've learned to watch for, along with yellow flags like "metroidvania", "user generated content", and a few others.
Ryu, if you're willing to make more of these, there's a Doom mod on moddb called "Legend of Doom", it's first person Legend of Zelda. It seems like a very faithful recreation of the game :D

It was pretty typical ryu to find a sword upgrade and say no to it because he just changed his color to a better defense color.

the original zelda beta design was a random generated dungeon crawl. overworld and story was added for depth of gameplay.

I think you can shoot the boomerang diagonally and obviously the upgrades are upgrades, don't skip them.
