    The way I dealt with the clone fight was I actually used the magnet item, he doesn’t shoot when it’s equipped. So you can then buffer between items and get in some cheap shots, and he’s completely powerless.

      Honestly I kind of wish they kept that for the rest of the series. Thanks a lot, this guide inspired me to start Mega Man 1 again, and I just defeated the Yellow Devil. No pause exploit, no quick saves. I went to the beginning of the stage after every game over, and it was annoying. However, it was super fun to learn the pattern and super rewarding to finally take that yellow thing down. Standby for updates, I hope the rest of the game won't take long.
    Upd: I finished it. Boy was it close, I was down to my last life. Both Wily machines weren't difficult at all, but I found it hard to keep my cool and have enough health by the time I got to the finale. Anyway, I'm real proud of myself for beating an NES game with no saves, and a pretty hard one at that. Your guides are great, you make it look really easy.

    So basically, it is easy if you just use pause buffering (not playing as developers intended). This is the only Mega Man game I really tried to beat as a kid, but was not able to (or only once, not sure). I did not know about pause buffering back then, and usually gave up on that cyclops robot (yellow devil as you called him).

    The pause buffer works because bosses s run out while the game is paused. Unpausing too fast doesn't work that well.

    • @divVerent
      @divVerent 2 года назад

      Without knowing the code, I bet they did blinking effect and invincibility frames with the same counter - blink status is just one bit of the counter. So to keep the blinking going during pause, they messed up the s.
      RAM was expensive back then... and fixing this may have required quite some refactoring. Hm... maybe pause was a late added feature?

    • @gManGabe
      @gManGabe 2 года назад

      @@divVerent may just have been an oversight - they might have just set the button to set all movement to 0, stop collision detection and nothing else.
      Considering the history of mm1 & 2 the team might not have had the time to test everything.

    • @divVerent
      @divVerent 2 года назад

      @@gManGabe Yeah, also that pause is on select is odd and speaks even more that pause was a late addition. Like, maybe:
      Devs at first: we have weapons screen, that already pauses the game, we don't need another pause. Let's put that screen on start because it does pause.
      Later: oh, people do want a pause button that doesn't enter the menu. Let's put that on... damn, start is taken... select.

      The Mega Man series were typically games that were rented. They were very much games that one could win in three days. First day figuring out how to beat each of the eight bosses. Second day doing so in the most efficient way to prepare for the final stages. Third day beating Dr. Wily. Worst case scenario, you wrote down your password, and rented the game again to beat it the next weekend.
      People seem to forget that most games were rented not owned. The NES didn't have many games designed to take a month or more to win. That concept didn't become typical until the 64 bit era, which is why they introduced memory cards.
