••• About this episode •••
------------------------------------------
In Wildlife Photography - Red Deer | Behind the scenes I am in the field with my camera to discover the Danish woodlands in my search for the red deer.
Wildlife photography is not always easy and once again I am reminded when I try to stalk these amazing mammals. It is quite a challenge to get close to the deer because especially the females are very sensitive to noise and scent, so I have to be aware of the wind.
It is such an amazing experience to sit out there in the late afternoon when the red deer start to come out from the forest. When their powerfull bellowing fills the air and I truly feel humble and grateful.

••• WHO I AM •••
---------------------------
My name is Morten Hilmer and I work as a professional nature and wildlife photographer. In a serie of short 4K videos I will share my fascination of nature with you and invite you behind the scene when I am out photographing the fascinating wildlife, the stunning landscapes and the wild nature. I work as a ILCP photographer, and nature conservation is very close to my heart.
For me nature photography is all about sharing the unique experiences and to put awareness to nature conservation. Furthermore my goal is to inspire as many as possible to get out and experience the true beauty of nature.
“I have served in the Danish military special unit, the Sirius Patrol, for two years and that has given me the skills and confidence to operate alone in the arctic regions. I have spent two further years in the northern parts of Greenland meeting the local people and working on photography projects. My driving force is a sense of adventure and my fascination for nature, and my curiosity and empathy for other cultures has led me to many remote regions.”
Read more about my time in the Sirius Dogsled Patrol: www.bbc.com/earth/story/201602...
Beside the many publications my photographs has been awarded in the Wildlife photographer of the year and European Wildlife photographer of the year photo competitions.
In spring 2017 I published my book Silence of the North: shop.mortenhilmer.com/product...

"I don't want to disturb them for a photograph" - Love it. That's how all of us should live. Without any hindrance to others.
Absolutely
You got what you wished for
My wife asked me if i wanted a coffee,i found myself whispering "yes please" i was that engrossed.Brilliant video and subbed.
+Jim Bryce that is awesome. Your wife must have made the rolling eyes😉 thank you so much for subscribeing. I hope you will enjoy the future videos.
Ha ha! I can see it happening! Ha ha!
It's psychological, I remember when I was in year 10 my biology teacher was sick and he had to whisper and I found my self accidentally whispering as well.
This is what i call PASSION .. love your attitude
When you said "I don't want to disturb them for a photograph on my camera" sir it gave me goosebumps. Thank you so much for being here to tell me that we, the photographers don't disrespect to stage or create something visually appealing. I'm a photographer, not a wildlife photographer but just a photographer. Thanks for this video!
Its amazing to witness stressless nature and even better to let it remain. Thanks for bringing us along!
Thank you so much Henry - so nice of you to leave me these nice comments:)
"What does it take to be a pro?"
Watch this video
Just amazing.
So nice of you to leave such a nice comment. Thanks a lot The anime XPO ;)
years of creaping up to things .. being a military shooter helps .. or just moving without being seen or heard . without affecting the way shadows move around you or you against the background . and stepping silently through broken twigs ..damp conditions help soften the noise beneath your feet . skin is a giveaway cover up , move s l o w l y ..if you can hear yourself EVERYTHING CAN . practice makes perfect .. or you can stumble into something totally by accident ! it does happen often . some deer will walk out and surprise you .. crazy beautifull shizny
I was trying to find a video, that gives me an impression how it is to be a wildlife photographer, and in what mindset those photographers are in. I live in a big city and am interested in wildlife photography. This video did a phenomenal job of showing me that. Great content. Thank you Morten!!
i never tire of watching these videos over and over.
I think I'll watch nature photography right before I sleep.
OMG the ASMR on these videos are incredible especially with headphones on.....shhhhh..... the deer may hear me.
the best ASMR video!!
Ya
No wonder animal documentaries were my favorites as a child. Their creators are the most respectful of nature among us.
I like that the photographer respects those he shoots. He's not a paparazzi in the natural world.
Another great video Morten.. I love your passion & the fact you didn’t want to get closer for a better shot or angle so as not to disturb them. A true inspiration & great example to ALL wildlife photographers that the welfare of the subject is paramount.. Have to ask, what lens was that?
+Mark & Sue Parker thank you so much for leaving such a lovely comment. It is very motivating for me 👍 I am so glad you like it and truly honored that I can inspire you. The lens is the Nikon 600mm f/4 VR. ☺️ great lens but a heavy beast..
I always find myself holding my breath when I see your videos haha shhhhhhh!
So nice to hear 👍😀👍
I can so relate to the silence, the waiting, the patience, the excitement. Thank you for taking us with you !

My deep respect for you Sir. You are truly inspiring. We do have a lot to be done here in Assam, India. I hope someday, I will be able to do what you have done. Cheers for Mother Nature.
This is the nice way to hunt animals and your hunt memories can last ages
Another absolutely brilliant piece of work by Morten. You give me so much hope that despite what we all have become, we can still find gratitude in our hearts for what the nature has given us so freely. And the respect you show the nature around you is a sermon preached in silence, but only those who can hear your whisperings can hear it in their hearts. Missed the "coffee break" and the wicked smile that follows! Keep up the good work and thank you.
Hi Morten. I really enjoy these videos! It's the anticipation of waiting and watching, and the amazing feeling of being in nature and maybe, or maybe not, capturing a great shot, which doesn't actually matter so much. I think your attitude is great, to not want to disturb the nature just for your own benefit. I think it's amazing! Thanks!
Thank you so much Joanna. So nice of you to leave a comment. It was awesome to spend some evenings in company with these amazing animals 😀 Yes I think it is important as a wildlife photographer not to disturb when we are out with the camera. Nature is their home and I always do my very best to respect that. Nature Photography for me is about capturing the moods out there 🙂
Morton is The best wildlife photographer I know of his respect and stealth like approach towards wildlife is incredible such an inspirational man keep up the good work buddy

Det er meget meget godt Morten! I am not a Dane but your name and the slight accent gives it away. Everything about you sharing this experience with us is spiritual - your commitment, respect and empathy for the deers, the background score and your own whispers. Tusind tak min ven og venlig hilsen fra Indien

Nature is a very most beautiful feeling in the world Great Sir
I like to see that instead of a weapon you have a camera. You're great, in heaven I'd like to see you. Greetings from Guatemala

Such a serene experience especially on a Monday. God bless you, Morten! :-)

I had a suggestion .. It would be awesome if you showed the photo after the shutter snaps
That's I was thinking

Thank you so much for writing NZ Tech, I really appreciate:)
Your respect for the animals is surreal. Well done!
I really admire you and your mentality. If more people think like that about wildlife...
How are you only at almost 1000 subscribers. Best wildlife photography videos i've ever seen. Keep it up. Subd :)
Thank you so much for your sub and for your compliment. I am very glad you like it so much. Until for a month ago I just used RUclips to store my short films but now I am starting up, trying to do something that can inspire other people who are interested in Wildlife photography and nature. Maybe a few more will subscribe in the future - time will tell;) Once again thanks for your support - it means a lot for my motivation. :)
No problem im looking at doing some more nature and wildlife stuff when I have the time. Are you a full time photographer?
Oh yes get out there as much as possible - it is truly amazing. Yes I work full time with nature and wildlife photography but this thing with youtube is new to me:)
Well keep with it because it can be extremely profitable if you get a following, which you could easily obtain with your content.
Thanks. So encouraging with people like you😉😉👍👍
That's amazing. Honestly. Hate when people hunt to kill, but what you did, is actually skill of hunting. Get close. Be quite. And shoot. But shoot not to kill but to capture. That is an amazing respect for respecting nature
I really appreciate your nice comment. I really appreciate. Thanks a lot Jimmy
As a hunter and a photographer... I shoot to do both... it’s wild life preservation... if hunters didn’t hunt these animals would over run the forests and populated areas... we hunters don’t just “hunt to kill” we hunt to eat and for wildlife preservation.
Ya Boi Colbs - oh bullshit. No hunter goes out there to "preserve the ecosystem". They do it because they're cowards who attempt to compensate for their tiny wang by hiding behind a weapon. Nature will balance itself out. No human interaction is needed.
Morten, i'm a photographer too, but i mainly photograph night clubs and noisy night events. Most of the time my current jobs make me wanna quit photographing because of stress and the soon as i started watching your videos you made me realize again how beautiful of an art photographing is. Thank you my friend. I shall seek better meaning in my own art now.
the music, the videoclips, the videocut, the images at the end... the feeling what i get when i watch these videos is like if i´m right there with you. And it is so nice to see how sensitiv these animals really are!
What a wonderful comment - thank you very much Massimo:) I am so glad you like it:)
Thank you so much for sharing! i really felt your excitement in this, makes me just want to go out now and find something amazing..
You filmed this so well!! what camera did you use ? Iv been wanting to make videos like this myself but have not been sure how to do it.
Subbed! cant wait for more 👌🏼
Thank you so much for your nice compliment. I used a Panasonic GH4 which is now available for a very good price because of the new GH5. I tried the Sony A6500 which has an awesome autofocus, but I delivered it back because I could not work without the flip screen. I am now using the GH5 because of the stabilizer. I wish you all the best luck with the film making - please let me know when something is on;)
Morten Hilmer Thank you for replying :) cool! well i have the sony a6300 but its not good for filming how you did while moving around.. I might need to have a look at the gh5 if i get the cash haha! and Thank you, would be cool if you wanted to watch what i make very kind! im still new to youtube so i have much to learn.
Then you should have either go for the Canon G7X or the Canon 80D. Both with the flip out screen and with the best autofocus. I was also considering the Panasonics but I dropped them due to the bad autofocusing. I now own both the G7x and the 80D and I'm so satisfied with both the quality and Canon's dual pixel auto focus.
I WANT THAT LENS!
It is awesome but to be honest I use the Tamron 150-600mm most of the time:)
This footage is so amazing, I enjoy watching every day.
Thank you for the video and huge respect!!!
You’re a hero to me brother. I hope to find myself in such adventures with my photography someday.
Really great video, I love how far you go to respect and not disturb the animals. I know the D5 is a phenomenal camera, but have you ever considered its APS-C brother the D500 for the extra reach?
Hi Timothy and thanks a lot for your comment and your suggestion. Sorry for the late answer. I am just in Switzerland to photograph the beautiful autumn colours so I have limited internet. You definitely have a point with the DX and it is also something I have considered a lot. The D500 is an awesome camera and I have been tempted to get it as a backup/alternative to the D5, but is is not as good in low light. Though I am still thinking about it every now and then, and maybe one day it will be in my bag;) What are you photographing yourself? and what are you shooting with?
All the best
Morten
Morten Hilmer I'm actually shooting a D500 myself. Use it for sports, wildlife, portraits, and astrophotography. I'd been considering the change to FX but the D500 spec wise just blew away all of the comparably priced FX cameras (also was able to keep all of my existing glass). The autofocus is to die for, but you're well aware of that since it's the same as the D5's. The D500's low light/high ISO is actually quite good in my opinion. I've shot football at 6400-12800 ISO and gotten very usable images after minimal noise reduction in post. Up to about 51,200 ISO or HI 1 you can get usable images.
That sounds awesome. Actually I did not expect that you could get a usable photo at H1, but I recon I have to try that camera out. It is so amazing how much good stuff they have managed to put into such a compact body. Really nice:)
I can not imagine when taking a picture of a deer suddenly want poop...
😅
....AND I absolutely admire your enthusiastic "go-to" attitude! Great footage.
*ASMR & Photography* best video ever
Wouldn´t it be better using a mirrorles camer because of the electronic shutter making it silent?
Yes you are absolutely right and I am definitely considering the A9 - looking forward to testing it:)
great job !
at us in Ukraine all wild animals have already shot out, only hunters have remained alive
What a wonderful person you are ! Inspiration at its best.couldn't stop watching even when my tea arrived. More please.
love you soo much for this great experience this is what i love the most i feel it once again millions of thanks
i have a question. Doesn't the shutter sound pose a problem in these situations?
Thank you so much for writing PoCanDo _, I really appreciate:) Yes the shutter can be a problem, and sometimes the mirrorless system would be an advantage. Most of the time though, they ignore the clicks after a few photos:)
Morten Hilmer I see. Thank you. Love the video, looking forward to more.
I had the exact same question. Do you use the "quiet" mode? Or just the regular shutter? Thx!
Sharpshooter😂

It's so tough to film yourself while shooting wildlife, but you managed to do it really well.
