Been in the trade for 18 years and I will only install Titan HD or Turbo 200's. The HDs are made in the USA and are holding up pretty well and the Turbos just last and last and have a 5 year warranty, everything else is garbage and only lasts 1-2 summers before they start failing
My unit is just three years old I swapped out the capacitor (made in Mexico) for a Titan HD. If you are looking for a igniter for your furnace look at Robertshaw Made in USA.
I keep a spare one that has been run in my unit to test it, as a spare at all times. I nearly burned up a condenser fan motor when the capacitor died while I was mowing the lawn. I had finished the lawn and noticed that the house was getting hot. I looked outside & noticed that the fan had stopped. The motor was so hot that water sprayed on it turned to actual steam. The thing is still running, and that was about 10 years ago! The motor was made in India.
I think changing a capacitor should be covered in a minimum service call. That can be $50 or $500, either way the customer should always be informed of the minimum service call price before you come to them. Service call plus the part cost.
You would think so because by the time they are done with their meter checking the microf readings, its only 3 more minutes of work to swap in a new one. Lots of contractors bill in 1/3's of an hour or 20 minutes is the same as 1 minute extra. Even so, it's surely not unfair to figure $50 plus the cap and the service fee. Lots of contractors will not charge labor to install the cap if they find the problem within the first 15 minutes.
Some companies are over priced for sure ,but there is a point when you are in business to make money and people google everything today to look up cost of parts and fill they are getting rip off! A lot of hidden fees like liability insurance, maybe you want to retire one day.Gas for truck! Heath insurance ! Truck repairs! Disability insurance! Tools! and more! and the most important KNOWLEDGE!
Many companies use flat rate pricing for repairs which generally will elevate the cost some but theres at least one company in every market whose business model is to price repairs so high that its easy to justify replacement, especially if they can get you to finance the replacement system. Offers to do seasonal services for super cheap are often time just a foot in the door for them to condemn your equipment.
I saw at least a couple of YT videos that suggested replacing a 330V rated cap with a 440V rated cap. I don't know if a mounting bracket needed to be bigger but that shouldn't be a big deal.
We usually choose capacitors based on the specs of interest, like rated operating voltage, max peak voltage, internal resistance, operating and peak current ratings, operating temp range, dielectric hysteresis, size, terminal configuration, case style and bonding ,and of course capacitance value. A reputable company will provide these parameters and be honest about it We can install separate capacitors in place of those multi-capacitor assemblies when there's adequate space available.
AMrad is 5 years warranty and made here in the USA, Florida. I think JARD and MARS are made in the USA as are Titan HD. I have a 1991 Amana condenser and it still has the OEM cap and contactor that still works, no leaks, no bulging etc. Unbelievable. Good capacitors are 370/440 volt rated and made in USA. Also, a good cap is going to cost $30 to $40 vs. $10 to $15 for the junk that lasts maybe 2 years. It is always a good idea to have a brand new spare handy for the hot summer day/night that you need a new capacitor and HVAC is swamped with service calls and can't see you for 2 to 3 days. Or, they haven't got the correct one at the time, you can supply them with the spare for less downtime.
Over this past weekend (22/23-June) a/c went out. With the excessive heat I couldn't get service until Monday 24-June. The company that installed/service my heat pump yearly diagnosed BOTH a bad dual run cap. and a defective contactor. Cost in excess of NINE HUNDRED DOLLARS. Quite ridiculous for about $40 in parts and about ONE HOUR'S LABOR!!!
@@waynetaylor8082 How greedy...I think you could get most of that back. Did they tell you this price before you said okay, do the work or after the work was done?
Yes they quoted me the price. Locally you sign a tablet authorizing the repair/work after the problem is diagnosed and before any work begins. Only the second repair on a sixteen year old Carrier HP. First time for cap., second time for contactor. Thinking about it that way, lessens the sting of writing that check. I appreciate your response, stay cool and enjoy the day/night depending upon your geographical location. PEACE 🤞.
Ive been using Titan and jard, mainly. In the industry since 1987. I have to disagree that "everything else is garbage.," o stay away from the turbos, pers. But, to each, his own.
Thats just my experience with many of the "made in elsewhere" caps, even on my own systems Ive had brand new caps not last a full season or are 20-30% out of spec by next spring. The turbos are pricey, but Ive only seen a couple that have failed or even gone out of spec so I installed them in every house ive owned but i'm in n. California so 5 months of a/c season and our power supply sucks, lots of brownouts and power spikes. Have you had bad experiences with the Turbos?
@@Adam-ul2px You bet, a Turbo is made by AmRad also with the same 5-year warranty. You can buy three standard AmRad caps for the price of a Turbo. Turbos works great and have their place. But they aren’t any more reliable than the standard AmRad caps. Our drawers are packed with the top 15 models. Same product and same company, each van has two Turbos for the super rare. Both have the warranty and factory tested. Just saving you a few bucks and have an extra on the shelf, if needed.
I offer the customer Amrad,Titan Hd,Titan pro or turbo caps. If you give them options who cares what they choose charge accordingly. Most people choose the Titan Pro and they work just fine.
I am the only company in my area who honor the capacitor warranties. I have warrantied more amrad than titan pro. Thats my experience. If you read the factory read out of a lot of the Amrad they sometimes read lower than the MFD rating. And 9 times put of 10 there a reason the capacitor failed, they just dont "go bad".
Capacitor question for the experts. I bought a dual capacitor 40/5 but label reads 370V. Original capacitor reads 370/440V is it ok to use? please advise
Have 44 yr. Old carrier 2.5t pancake ac with 7.5 kw heat still rocking all the factory parts, even the same 9inch tall 3.5in wide 35/5 cap on it, cools like a champ here in Phx, Az. Don't make them like they used to
Yes, buy a good quality capacitor ! But most HVAC companies gouge their services pricing!! Learn to do the service yourself!! I had 2 ridiculous service charges!! So now, I’m well prepared to do it myself!!
Unfortunately, I made the mistake of talking about a specific company once and all of their employees started going on my small company’s Google page and leaving bad reviews. So I try to refrain from naming specific companies but still give out good information.
Just buy a standard AmRad capacitor. They have a 5-year warranty, you don’t need a turbo. You can buy them eBay or Amazon. I only sell American made. There are six American made brands, but we primarily only stock AmRad.
That much capacitor blowing should indicate other problems like a motor that's drawing too much current. And then there's the question of knowing if the capacitor has gone bad or not, and how so.
@@elgringoec First mushroomed, second was "weak". You do make an excellent point though. The system is 19 years old, and I'm quoting for replacement before any more failures.
You’re entitled and that’s the problem, you want same day service no matter how hot or cold it is day or night and then cry because you’re paying for an emergency service. Techs work 24/7 in any condition, we sacrifice our own lives for you to have heat and ac. You are the problem, stop being a selfish entitled idiot. It’s sad how entitled Americans have become
Shouldn’t call them more then once so they can document or study. Cause they document when you you need that first maintenance but don’t tell em and fix it.
Sounds like click bait! Let me see, I know 2 American companies, but I’m not gonna say who, most capacitors are equal & obviously better than the failed one in your unit. Easy to change out if your a DYI’ER. Plenty of YT video on how to do this and not get ripped off by your local AC guy!
Hvac technicians in my area are criminal to say the least and I though car mechanics were bad. I educated my self about hvac systems which only confirmed my thoughts. By chance I learned that some of my fellow buddies at work used to be technicians in the hvac industry and they also confirmed how crooked people in that industry can be and are. One of the guys installed a system in his house that they just removed from a customers house because they upsold her a new system for 20k!

For a licensed HVAC Company that is a VERY fair charge.

Duel capacitor is the problem split them up any make will last longer
Titan HD made in USA. Titan Pro made in PRC.
