Michigan Football Better than 2023?

- Will the 2024 Michigan football team be better than the 2023 team that went undefeated and won the college football national championship? Without Jim Harbaugh? Without JJ McCarthy? Maybe. There seems to be a lot of excitement in Ann Arbor these days.
MICHIGAN FOOTBALL BETTER?
Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore is bullish on this year's Wolverines team and he is very excited for the upcoming college football season. He is particularly very high on this year's crop of linebackers who will be replacing current NFL players.
And the Michigan offensive line has been the best in college football for the past several years. And while most of the line will be new in 2024, it will be full of ready-to-go upper classman. If the success of the 2023 Michigan football team was based on a strong running game and great defense, expect Moore and company to double down on that philosophy.
RECRUITING HITS AND MISSES
In our daily look at Big Ten recruiting there are some hits and misses for Penn State football and some excitement at Indiana and Minnesota. In fact, Minnesota football ranks in the top 20 nationally with its present class of 2025 recruits.
POWER RANKINGS
Finally, in our weekly Power Rankings we scrutinize a major publication's top ten ranking for loudest college football stadiums around the country. How many Big Ten football stadiums made the list? Find out right here on Locked on Big 10 with Craig Shemon.

That would be near impossible. I have been watching and following Big Ten football for over 50 years now. The 2023 Michigan team is the best I have ever seen in the conference. Driven, focused and very talented. Top ranked defense in the country....giving up only 10 points per game. Offense ranked 14th in the nation in scoring averaging 36 per game. Could beat you running or throwing.....very balanced. Solid (except for the Bama game) special teams. During the stretch run they defeated #10 Penn st,a decent Maryland team,#2 Ohio st,#18 Iowa,#4 Alabama and another # 2 Washington team. Not going to duplicate that again.
That team was legendary, straight up
When you cheat it looks that way....why. do think there's controversy about Tom shady....too much of a coincidence
Absolutely. One of the best college football teams to ever take the field. No one else stood a chance against them last year. Way too talented, driven and focused.
If they get 10-2 this season with this schedule strength, I would say is not far off
@@jetstreamx15 lol such a 🤡
Michigan will go as far as the offensive line will take them, not QB.
LMAO
Part of Harbaugh’s legacy at Michigan is that he hired great people and left the program strong and in good hands!
Legacy???? With an asterisk... more like controversy
If you say so buddy !
Yeah that's why he couldnt get a protect me from cheating clause contract
Don’t take my word of course, he kept the core players from leaving resulting in a 15-0 season, third straight Big 10 title, third straight win over “The Ohio State” and a National title. Oh, and he hired and mentored the coach that replaced him.
That’s a Legacy fellas!
Are you kidding. Everyone that could leave did
It's like Keith Jackson described Michigan Stadium, "it's like a dinner plate almost flat where most stadiums are like bowls", that's why Michigan Stadium doesn't get very loud.
There are certain games it gets loud like Ohio State and a few others
We will all know how good Michigan can be on September 7, when Michigan plays Texas in Ann Arbor. If Michigan pulls an upset and beats Texas, the ceiling is the national championship.
Your on hallucinogens
If Michigan loses to Texas, the ceiling is still a national championship. 🙂
@@jimmy5634 I wish.
It’s not an upset if they win💀
Mullings is likely a significant player.
I doubt they’ll be as efficient, particularly on offense, at least not early. Defensively they may be as good.
The great thing about college football is you won’t know until the football starts.
I actually don't expect Michigan to fall off very much. The previous staff clearly had no intention of leaving the cupboards bare when they left. Coach Harbaugh loves Michigan too much to set the program up for that kind of embarrassment. I fully expect this program to reload, even without JJ, I truly think they could be even better than last year. Wolverines have way more returning production than what it looks like on paper due to our deep rotation last year, but if you polled anyone outside the fanbase, they'd swear we'll see all new faces everywhere.
Could not agree more. You know Michigan well.
Oh is it going to be fun coming on hear and making fun of just how cluess you guys are.... welp, don't say I didn't warn you.... You are going to struggle to beat Fresno State in your opener and Texas is going to beat the soul out of you. If Lincoln Riley has indeed decided that yes, DEFENSE and does matter, you could be in an absolute Dog fight to escape with a 1-3 start in a worse case and more likely 2-2 before you even get into the meat of the schedule. I think a good year based on ALL the challenges that will unfold this season would be a 8-4.
@@robschaller9061 Comedian…stop back in late Nov. You love the taste of crow at Turkey day weekend
??? On what planet is taking ALL of the staff along with the S&C coach leaving them having a full cupboard? Absolutely DELUSIONAL TAKE BY YOU
@@robschaller9061 it is obvious you no nothing about the Michigan coaching staff. Watch the season unfold.
Davis Warren is a good runner yes he prefers the pocket but he has the ability to run
How in the heck do you do better than an undefeated National Title???
Well, undefeated national title while giving up even fewer points per game and scoring more...
Michigan fan, fair and solid information and show! Thanks…
Thank you.
I’m lobbying for Wisconsin to add a deep and steep extra 20 rows or so across and above the entire east side luxury suites. Add both numbers and more noise. Love the deep and steep concept.
The matchups that will be interesting will be Michigan vs USC and Michigan vs Oregon and same for OSU vs those 2. Cause it will be a good gauge as to if/how USC is ready for the Big 10 at a high level, same for Oregon. I suppose you could say same for their matchups with Penn State.
USC / Michigan is a bad matchup for USC…..our defense will get pressure on everyone, especially a new QB. The USC defense, on the other hand, will have a lot of trouble even slowing down our run game.
Can’t really mention Oregon in the same sentence as usc in this situation. In every aspect we are better than usc, that includes the interior personnel to compete with the big 10
@@5a.m Too touchy.
Not worried about anybody except Oregon OSU and Texas all extremely loaded Michigan's o line is fine with transfers and returning defense is one of preseason best question at QB if one excells and steps up Michigan can compete with anyone that being said I see us as 10-2 or 9-3 I see OSU as the naty this year their only weakness if u want to call it a weakness is defensive backfied
@@GregWilliams-no1oj
I would agree generally with your assessment, with a few differences of opinion.
I would specify that Texas is probably uniquely situated to give us problems. Despite losing their all-galaxy interior D-linemen to the draft, they will still likely be able to stop our run game if they commit enough resources to that. Do we have a QB that can get it done regardless of what the defense wants to do? I don’t know and neither does anyone else.
As for Ohio State, they have talent, sure. But they always have talent. Their problem is coaching and culture. Ryan Day, in my opinion, stepped outside his sweet spot skills-wise when he left offensive coordination for head coaching. He doesn’t inspire his players toward team goals; in fact, it looks like the only position groups that get love are the QB room and the WR room, and even some of those guys (McCord and Fleming specifically) weren’t all that jazzed about coming back, and left, along with half the RB room. Their team this year is an odd amalgam of vets who haven’t won anything despite having the talent to do so, and mercenaries brought in fill gaps. After all that, they still haven’t addressed their O-line either.
I’d say Ohio State @ Oregon could go south for Ohio State pretty quickly. Let’s be honest, Ohio State would have lost to Washington had they played last year, and Washington beat Oregon twice. Oregon is post-Bo Nix and some other guys, that’s true. But they still have a great coach who gets a LOT out of his players, and Dylan Gabriel, who is far better than anyone Ohio State will be facing in the Big 10 this year.
And I know Ohio State is telling everyone they have the best RB room in football. They do have the most talented running back room, but that doesn’t mean that will translate into a consistent run game, not with their sketchy O-line and lack of an identity in the passing game. The word on the street is that Ryan Day will defer to Chip Kelly in running the ball. I’ll believe it when I see it. You don’t recruit all those bling QB prospects to run the ball like they’re promising. It won’t work and Ryan Day’s power football allergy will kick in.
All that to say I think we may have trouble with Texas, but I trust our coaching staff far more than Ohio State’s to figure things out.
I’d say we go 10-1 and Ohio State goes 10-1 going in to The Game this year.
As a College Football (and Penn State) fan, I've attended a game at #3 Penn State-Beaver Stadium, #4 Florida Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, #6 Ohio State Ohio Stadium, #9 Washington Husky Stadium, and #10 Wisconsin Camp Randall, but walked around #2 Oregon's Autzen Stadium. Penn State's Beaver Stadium was by far and away the loudest, crazed fanbase that fully engaged in the game. However, attending the Miami (FL)-Florida game at Ben Hill Stadium in 2008 was quite an experience, due to the vitriol between the Hurricanes-Gators fanbases that were cultish in their sheer hatred towards each other.
Michigan's Michigan Stadium is quiet in comparison to the Big 10's loudest stadiums, which I've watched Penn State play in the all 12 stadiums/universities minus the the six coastal Big 10 Universities.
Great analysis and breakdown!
Thank you very much!
If Alex Orji turns out to be Bo Jackson at QB....might be possible
I’m thinkin’ Jayden Davis might just sneak up on all of ‘em and take it all away :) Gotta give ‘em all a chance, if the Freshman is better, PUT HIM IN 😊
145 will feature the #1 Defense, and #1 Offense in all of college football. 16-0 National Champions. Gonna be an interesting discussion for years to come.
The defense certainly can be as good as 2023. Maybe even better! But with JJ in the NFL now the big question mark is quarterback. Only time will tell but there won’t be much margin for error this year with our brutal schedule. With that being said, I expect Michigan to be really good this year!
It would be almost impossible on defense. 10.3 ppg allowed is absolutely ridiculous. That said, a lot of the depth/rotational players from last year are starters. Hausman and Barham are better players than Colson and Barrett. More polished and complete. The d-line with Derrick Moore, Josiah Stewart, Kenneth Grant, Mason Graham, Rayshaun Benny, and Cam Goode will be the best unit in the country. Will Johnson, Makari Paige, DJ Waller, Jyaire Hill, Jaden McBurrows, and Quinton Johnson should be a top 5 secondary. With Moore as head coach, the o-line is at the very least great if not elite. Most of the backups got significant reps and will be ready to start. Tyler Morris was able to get open against Bama’s secondary last year, Fredrick Moore, Kendrick Bell, will surprise a lot of people. Coleston Loveland is the best TE in the country, Edwards, Kalel Mullings and Ben Hall make another elite backfield, Orji brings an element that was never used much with JJ and that’s his running ability. If they use him like a Milroe or a Denard Robinson and he can make 1-2 big throws a game, this team could be scary.
You are so so right. Folks are sleeping on this Michigan team.
Ohio State's D-line ROOM is rated #1 and Michigan's is rated #2. Ohio State's secondary is rated #1 Michigan's #4. Ohio State's O-line is rated #10, Michigan's did not make the Top 10. Ohio State''s QB room was rated 3rd, Michigan's did not make the Top 10. Ohio State's RB room is rated #1, Michigan's did not make the Top 10. Ohio State's WRS were rated #2, Michigan's did not make the Top 10. This per the unbiased research done by Antheon College Football Magazine. Buy it for the details.
Not to mention that ohio's expectations are over blown. They are degraded now 2 years in a row a QB. Their wide reciver room is now degraded 2 years in a row. They have NOT addressed the glarring issues of their offensive line, and their defense is said to be great, but that hasn't been proven at all. Throw in the unrealistic pressure to win every game, lack of culture, and having a soft coach, I predict a disastrous season under cryin ryan for ohio.
Great report again my friend! Go Blue!!
The fact that Autzen is half the size of all these other stadiums and it's even listed in the top 10 is kinda crazy.
I've been to Clemson's stadium, it's not comfortable, the seats suck and if you are closer to the top you feel like you are leaning forward. In the Big House, my big arse and my brother can sit comfortably, not at Memorial Stadium. I'll take comfort over decibel level anyday.
Minnisota recruiting rankings?? How about Rutgers recruiting class??
We mentioned Rutgers phenomenal class last week!! Greg Schiano is killing it.
Rutgers got even better the last few days. Last week was nice, but the pedal is going down now!
19 - 3 star and 1 - 4 star players for Rutgers = 12
Nobody gives a shit! Smh
Utilize Orji as a DK Metcalf and get him the ball in space. He's could be an unstoppable weapon.
In my view Michigan will be a good football team but I think 8-4 or 9-3 would be a successful year. We have an all new coaching staff, new QB and many new starters along with new and tough members of the Big 10. Moreover, Texas will be a challenge early on. There are many "moving parts" and as long as the kids play hard, stay healthy and graduate, I will be a happy fan!
Reasonable opinion.
@@LockedOnBIG10 - Thanks Craig I appreciate your show and insights! Keep up the good work.
Well they have 5 straight home games to start the season at home not to mention 8 total home games. Must be nice.
Apparently, Texas was originally supposed to be in Austin, but there was some kind of schedualing conflict there, so they moved it to Michigan.
@@freeclimb5487 no sir go back and check there schedule over the last 5 years it's the same thing over and over. Min of 3 - 5 straight home games to start season and 7-8 total home games. Denegal is not much of a runner. Less so than Warren even IMO.

Orji or the QB spot is a big ???. But every time Orji touched the ball he made a good run. The year before Milton started he looked bad a times and vulnerable to getting sacked.
Orgi is a tremendous athlete. He is an underrated passer. If he can sync up with the new crop of receivers the team will be really, really, good.
@@sanjaygopal627He seems to have edge rusher lower body strength and not afraid to be hit or hit a linebacker or block for RB. Just curious what he can do with a full game or half game.
@@SnowDaulphin There was some youtube videos of him throwing and he looked darn good. If he gets in sync with the young receiver core, watch out! Agree about this strength and willingness to barrel through defenders. Reminds me of the Alabama QB. As I recall M used Orgi to simulate the AL QB during Rose Bowl prep. I am fairly optimistic about this season.
@@sanjaygopal627yes. No one is questioning his talent and athleticism. It all comes down to decision making and handling the game under pressure. Munroe seemed to handle the pressure well while he wasn’t a perfect offensive threat. For all QBs the metrics look all good until you play Texas and give up 4 unforced turnovers. Hopefully we are not in that situation.

Uhhh yeah no way

How better can you get 15-0😮😮
With 42 Teams in the Big 10? UM plays ALL 4 New Teams And Texas, Ark St , Fresno? Why no MAC Teams? ohio Only plays 1 of the gnu Teams? WHY does ohio get such an Easy schedule? Sadly, I expect to lose several games this year!
16 - 0 would be better.
9-3 at best !
As far as play is concerned, people have to remember the direction Michigan has been slowly prodding themselves after much external "encouragement" considering the fall out when Michigan tried to move with the flow when it was safe to do it but screwed it up with Rich Rod, and him bringing the spread from West Virginia.
Michigan has to learn to swallow their pride, because what they had done to Rich Rod, was utterly reprehensible - you don't recruit a coach over, and then micromanage the hell out of him and then don't let them implement what you hired him to do.
Meanwhile OSU brings Urban Meyer over, to bring in the same system Rich Rod was bringing the Michigan, but Ohio State implemented theirs... Michigan sat on the sidelines pouting about this "Michigan man" nonsense.
Talking about "tradition"
I grew up in Ann arbor, went to school there, played ball there, Bo Schembechler never talked about 'tradition' - he talked about the team, "the team, the team, the team"
And right now, the offensive side of 'the team' is moving to the RPO, where it should have been years ago.
The resurgence of the rushing QB, has been the key to these domineering offenses - and remember, it was Sherrone Moore's offense that made these adaptations so they ended up where they did.
That said, the dual threat quarterback... they're a running threat, they are the fourth rushing option at red zone or 3rd down situations.
The pass is not their weapon their legs are.
So when you have a scheme like run/run/pass... You are telling the defense that you were going to wear them down all four quarters.
That's what Michigan did and now have a branded style of play as a result. I yelled at them on the alumni threads for 2 years to start doing this, looks like somebody listened finally, lol
People have to go back and remember what the original quarterback was in football, since the talent originates from college... the original QB was a running back with an arm.
Adapted for 6' (+) secondaries, it's now a tight end with an arm - this is where you want to prepare to ground and pound, and maintain solid domination at the line of scrimmage.
Alex Orji doesn't have to pass, he can be a modest passer and still be quite successful, because the RPO is not a drop-back passer friendly scheme...
It wasn't designed for the archetypical QB.
It was designed for the prototypical quarterback, a QB with modest passing skill, but exceptional athletic ability will to be able to extend plays with their legs - the pass now becomes the option, on 3rd down situations, and that's all you need at that point.
A modest pass play will open it up... If needed, that's all you have to do.
I think people need to quit sweating Alex Orji, he'll be just fine.
Going back to a pocket passer is actually setting the program back from what they've been slowly trying to build over the last three seasons.
Don't get me wrong, I think Davis Warren is a very good QB, but he's no better than Jayden Denegal... just wait until Jayden Davis's turn... Oh man, that kids Got talent.
Just wait, 2024 team #145 at Michigan is more talented than you think.

Michigan football may win three games this upcoming season. They have no QB, no WRs. Their OL will be trash.
Three?!? Stop.
The level of DELUSION and Hubris is at all all time high. I don't know why you guys think what you do lets start with some things you say that just are simply UNTRUE. Since the 2022 class that was 3rd in the bigten and 12th nationally, each year has finished lower and lower in the final rankings so the pool of talent is DECLINING. Clearly, recruiting rankings are not an endall to how a team develops but if you are starting with less talent then the more correctly you have to be in talent evaluation. For some mythical reason, you guys believe wearing Maize and Blue means that every head coach hire and every assistant hire means clear sailing when history clearly shows that is NOT the case SPECIFICALLY in UM's history. The last 3 seasons under Harbaugh was magical for you guys. We can argue what impact the in person advanced scouting played in that but that isn't the point of this discussion. The point is that PRIOR to 2021 Harbaughs UM teams were DREADFULLY BAD. You went a LONG TIME between elite level runs with a whole lot of BAD football that is a FACT and can not be denied.
Moore maybe the next great HC for UM. That is FAR from assured to happen though. There is a MONUMENTAL difference being a HC and what he did last season. Harbaugh was with the team the normal lead up to games so he didn't even have to run practice, all Moore did was call plays and manage the clock. Good job by him doing it... but its not the same thing as being a HC. Moore was forced to hire an ENTIRE head coaching staff and the odds of it being a great staff are next but not zero. To expect a 1st time head coach to get all of that correct, get an entire staff all on the same directing cohesively rowing the same direct is something that has to be LEARNED. You see it with Ryan Day. Compare him today to when he took over... completely different guy today that only happens with experience.
The OL IS going to take time they ALWAYS DO. There is a difference between game experience and being a part of the starting OL. So when a Guard or Tackle gets in a game its almost always with an experienced line that is no longer there. The schedule is VERY challenging... its like when you listen to most fans the season starts with the Texas game and Fresno State is an assumed automatic win. Fresno State won 9 games last year including their bowl game... don't be shocked if you find yourself in a 4th quart battle. I think Texas will absolutely beat the soul out of you. If USC has made a genuine commitment to playing defense Riley will have enough offense to make this game an absolute war. There is a possibility, if there are big issues on the OL that UM could be 1-3...
You think Im totally crazy, well then you are ignoring what the recruiting ranks are CLEARLY tell you....
I'll save you the trouble… No… have a nice day.
Michigan will limit possessions and strangle teams out just like last year. They'll lose some of the lethal JJ 3d down throws but make it up with punishing inside zone with The Beast Orji and the Stable of Backs😂. Teams will wear down midway through the 3d and will be tapping out by the 4th. It's all about the Lines of Scrimmage and nobody does it better or with a deeper rotation 😤
Yes they are still good in the trenches.
Delusional
No offensive line
This is one of the worst podcasts out there. Michigan better in 2023?? Craig Shemon, are you really serious?? Over half the starters are gone and the coaching, those that could RAN from the program. What next, will Indiana win their first CFP championship? That should bring out some more hilarious laughter.
Only if theres no cheating
.Im sure theres more to be found
If there was more to be found they would have struck Michigan with more issues already. I think they’re trying to ice the cake but can’t get anymore. Also Ohio state did have a scandal that was worse than cheating. Penn state did too and you see how quickly everyone forgot about them.
