Realistically you’d always want to aim for center mass in a close range gunfight, these are still living creatures after all, not zombies. Clickers are just tough fucking bastards with enough fungal growth on their bodies that bullets don’t immediately penetrate vital organs.
Shit also it’d be hard being fucking terrified because of a clicker and trying to shoot a twitching clicker while shaking

19:32 for people who don't understand, the infected goal isn't to eat the victims but instead breath in and spreading the spores (fungus) on to others they come into contact with to survive.
i think they went away from spores in this adaptation. seems to only be those tendrils in the mouths of the infected that spread the virus

It’s not spores anymore, it’s mycelia particulates in tainted flour that started the infection. That’s why the runner put its mouth-mycelia in Tess, that’s why we see all the shots of sinuous, moving fungal strands going into infected’s bodies.
If it was spores, everyone would just be dead. You’d have to wear a gas mask anytime you were outside and you’d need to purge your clothes every time you came back in. It didn’t make sense in the game but it didn’t really need to, we could easily handwave it for gameplay purposes. You should watch the after-episode behind the scenes, they go into it a bit, it’s really interesting.
We’ve actually learned a ton about fungal structures since the game originally came out. The presence of miles long mega-mycelium underground which uses bio-electric impulses to communicate is a relatively recent discovery and obviously perfect for a horror setting. It’s why we got it in RE8 too, it was kinda the hot new discovery for a bit.

For anyone who didn't understand the ''kiss scene''.
She was already infected and a bite on the neck gives you 15-20 minutes. The infected didn't recognize Tess as a human, but as one of them that is why alot ran past her. Im guessing the one infected that came to her slowley and did...that, was to spread the infection through the tendrils, since she still was not fully infected.
@@solusmaximus2566 i don't really know for sure since they changed some key element from the game, but i'd say, based on how the show introduced the hive-mind thing, is that the one infected was just creating some sort of connection? Thus trying to spread the tendrils inside of the already infected Tess.
The bite on the neck was 2-8hrs I think, they spent 15-20 minutes coming down from the roof alone surely
Companion podcast for episode two the writer/director/creator goes into this. She was slowly turning. As soon as the infected approached her. She could feel slipping away. It took her last little bit of humanity she had left to flick and turn the lighter on. She could feel the connection of the fungi.
@@solusmaximus2566 I think the explanation is a bit different. If I recall, the infected aren't immediately aggressive. They just want to infect you. I'm assuming it was the only one in the horde that noticed she wasn't fully one of them yet, so it infected Tess further by sending the tendrils down her throat. If she had tried to fight back, then it would've gotten aggressive and bitten her to further infect her instead.
@@Mellowkin on the first episode when that infected girl on the wheelchair was being tested, the camera shows a poster with the times needed for a full on infection, and one on the head/face/neck is indeed,15-20minutes.
I see where you're coming from though.
These cold opens are the creepiest aspect of the show so far as it’s not just your regular slice of horror but much of how the virus itself is so based on scientific fact that it could legitimately happen in real life. Especially the scene where the mycologist flat out tells the soldier to bomb everything & everyone in it who contacted the infection. Such incredible writing & expansion on the lore of The Last of Us!

I hope every episode opening shows the time before the outbreak/how it progresses. It's such a good addition to an already great story.

I love all the little change ups in the show vs the game. Ellie getting bite again to prove to Joel that she truly immune. Vs the game she proved it by doing down into the subway full of spores and being able to breathe like normal. So GOOD 👏🏾
-The tendrils make it WAY more terrifying you literally would have to be looking out for EVERYTHING. I'd be like NOPE I'm staying right in the QZ.

I’ve seen some purists not liking the change but personally I find the concept of mycelium communication between infected to be so much scarier than some interior spaces being dangerous. It’s also a lot more grounded, that’s real shit, we literally discovered that about fungus since the game came out. With spores, there wouldn’t have been any survivors in the first place. They’d have been carried on the wind to every corner of the Earth, people would have to be literally living in clean rooms with disinfectant protocols every time they come in from outside, where they’d have to wear gas masks specifically designed to filter fungal particulates at all times.
The entire concept of the zombies in this universe is fucked up. Not only are they fast, but even if you're quiet as hell and miles away from where they are, you can wake them up by stepping on some roots? Yeah I'm definitely ending myself as soon as it starts.

@@spiraljumper74 I think the whole take of the show is more about "the enemy is the fungus", so no need for the whole fedra situation. Also, mantaining the focus on the fungus, they highlight Ellie's uniqueness for the times to come
Read about this Fungus once, it is a damn nightmare. What they saw in ants was It just kind of wraps around the brain without actually damaging it, just cuts it off from the body and takes over. So The infected are still conscious, just sitting in the back seat while the fungus drives.

in the first episode they show the tv news report about indonesia and notice how they had no pancake mix, sarah and joel declined the biscuits, sarah didnt eat the raisin cookies, and joel forgot the cake. all use flour which is where it started.
That's not really that important. That would limit the spread to people who buy Indonesian flour. The US grows its own. The fact that it spreads person to person through aggressive means and the quick infection rate is the reason it spread so fast.

Even though I played the game and knew how it would go down I was somehow even MORE terrified in the museum scene than when I played the game! The fact that Neil Druckman himself directed this episode makes it even more perfect. And from the cold open showing how cordyceps originated in Jakarta it proves the Bread Theory was right. Which makes rewatching the pilot even MORE tense because you see how lucky Joel, Tommy and Sarah were that they didn’t get infected from eating any flour based foods.
As for Tess’ ending, I think it was actually done better than the game. The scene of the mycelium (the fungal threads) going into her mouth was incredibly disgusting but the look in her eye when it happened showed that even though she was about to turn into one of them she managed used that iron will of hers to force herself through those last seconds before turning to burn them all. Stand and applaud for Anna Torv everyone!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Fun Fact: So Neil Druckman and Craig Mazin did more research on fungus and found out that if spores were as much of a threat as they are in the game that humanity would be completely wiped out. So they changed it to another scary fact about fungus which is that there are some species that grow so big that they can cover entire acres of rainforest in Brazil. So they added that instead of spores.
Seriously, it’s so cool and much scarier. And it’s something that we actually didn’t know about fungus when the game came out. Obviously the idea of a mega-mycelium underground, communicating via bio-electric impulses is perfect for horror, which is why we got it in RE8 too.
Tess backstory : She had a husband and a kid. They got infected. She killed her husband but couldn’t kill her son. Most likely locked him up in the basement to where he is a clicker to this day

What's so scary about the opening scene in Jakarta is just how competent everyone was. Like, there wasn't naive or clumsy oopsy by the military or the scientists that let things spiral. We see everyone in that scene being professional, knowledgeable, and pragmatic. That's how I would want to see people responding to a zombie outbreak in the real world. None of this "Oh, they didn't kill the infected all the way so the scientists get bit," or "Oh, she made some oversight in decontamination that let some of the cordyceps break containment," or "Oh some of my soldiers got bit, but they weren't hurt too badly and they're just taking a couple days off" or anything like that. The military knew they were dealing with a contagion, they knew to kill the infected for real, they knew their only hope was a cure.
And that's what is scary about it. I can't think of one thing anyone did wrong. But that didn't matter. From the moment anyone found out about it, it was probably already too late. It was in the grain, and patient 0 was nowhere to be found. Things went from "Everything is fine" to "Global annihilation is almost unavoidable" in 30 hours and there was nothing to be done

I always remember this thing someone said about set design. It's very, very difficult to design sets for a scene with natural deterioration of things because there shouldn't be a single hint of a human touch. Vegetation should look like how vegetation would grow. Buildings, cars and other structures should have appropriate damage. This show does it so well. The fungal patterns also remind me so much of annihilation.
There is an after credits behind the scenes on how they made that specific episode and the way they’ve changed things to work better cinematically

The fastest form of infection is the fungal spores being attached directly to the brain stem. That’s why so many bites were in the neck. But by going mouth to mouth with a non resistant host, it helps the fungus conserve energy with its host and spreads the infection EFFICIENTLY!
I saw twitter talking about flour and grain factory, it is very interesting, because he said in episode 1, on Joel's birthday they never ate pancakes, because flour in pancakes and they didn't get infected.

19:54 did you not notice that Tess had the shakes? She was we saw her hands shaking in several scenes after she left the museum and it was noticeably worse prior to this kiss--she has the shakes because the cordyceps are walling her brain off from her nervous system, which is f'ing up her motor skills; they're taking over. This is why she snapped at Joel earlier; she can feel herself slipping away. I think many watching this moment think her lighter is low on fuel, but I think it's because she doesn't have the coordination to flick it!
She couldn't run from the Stalker because the cordyceps want what was coming--the infected didn't chase after her because like the Adler's dog Mercy, they already know that she's one of them, and that explains why the Stalker calmly walks up to her; she's not a threat. Look at Tess' eyes. Her eyes and hand are the only parts of her that she can control, as she's quickly fading. This death was far worse than the game, but more meaningful, IMO.

Okay. Probable explanation for the “kiss”. The infected recognized Tess was one of them, but didn’t recognize her as part of the network he was a part of, so he was connecting her to the hive mind network.

20:48 so they did change it. From what I’ve heard there’s no spores. It’s the fungus and mold. It’s spread through how you’ve seen. Bites and I think I’ve heard spread in some things that could of had the mold in it like some bread (that last bit I’m not 100% on). They switched it up because if it was with spores still and they where going for the more real outcome and such then there is no way humanity would of lived.
