In game: bill is still the same beinf a paranoid prepper. Frank was in it but killed himslef after getting infected bit after trying to ditch bill. When they found franks body bill says “he was my partner.” 2012(?) at the time and theme of the game ppl automatically assume survival runner partners similar to Joel and Tess. But later way bill spoke about frank it hints they were lovers.

[spoiler ahead] I think episode 3 was the whole show in one episode. Joel has built an fence around himself just like Bill did. Eventually Joel will let Ellie in, protect her, and also be saved by her like Frank saved Bill after he got shot by the raiders.
Coincidentally Ellie ends up with the gun that Frank retrieved from the desk when the raiders came. The main difference is that unlike future Ellie, Frank remained completely useless around weapons. Notice how Frank responded "just one of the little ones" when Bill asked him about the gun he gave Tess and Joel.

Thought Roshi was tripping with that 10 miles outside of Boston thing. Then I remembered Boston is a major city a few miles wide so he's absolutely right they had to travel more than 10 miles total to be 10 miles outside city limits.

At first, I was hesitant on how they would handle Frank still being alive in the show as that dramatically changes Bill’s narrative purpose. After watching this episode, I have to say that they re-contextualized how Bill fits into the narrative in a way that I think works just as well. I think it’s another example of a well thought out deviation from the game that dug into the characters a little more, while also still serving the main characters’ arcs. Quite lovely episode.
R.I.P. Annie Wersching. Definitely a bittersweet day yesterday between her death and the episode.

It was more meaningful for Bill and Frank to be married to one another since Gay Marriage wasn't legalized until 2004 (which in the show, the end of the world started in 2003) so it might seem like just a random "I want to be married before I die", but it had A LOT more meaning to them.
As a little fun fact, the shirt Joel wears after the shower was Franks, which is the shirt that Joel mostly wears throughout the game (though it's plain green plaid rather than the green red plaid mixture in the show...still nice they put attention to details and explained how he got it).

I like how they changed things this episode, but I didn't really get why until the letter at the end. The difference in medium needed the change. In the game, at least character wise, Bill is a foil for Joel. He's self sufficent and capable but also distant, miserable and alone. He's also a means of giving you new game mechanics and a brief follower.
But since it's a show that's not gonna feature hours of watching them walking through town fighting Infected they hyper focused on his character. The choice to change him from being just a foil for Joel to be a mirror of Joel that confronts him with his own future choices. The choice to have connections and love in his life and purpose from that even if it's terrifying.
Joel currently has no connections with anyone since Tess died (and even they weren't as close as Tess wished) with only the hope of reconnecting with his estranged brother keeping going for now. And after losing so much will he be able to take the risk connecting with anyone and being happy, if the fear of losing them, like so many others, might too much to bear to even try.

I cried once every 15 minutes this entire episode. This is one of the most beautiful and emotionally powerful episodes of tv I’ve ever seen. This felt like a movie that I guarantee would be on every critic’s shortlist for best picture at the Oscars. Neil Druckman said in the BTS video after the episode that he and Craig Mazin had this philosophy on the show was “when should we deviate and when should we come back, if it’s kinda the same or worse then they stay (completely faithful to the game), if it’s better we deviate”. I’m SO DAMN HAPPY THEY DEVIATED! And I’m so happy that it ended with them dying together instead of Bill just forever living alone like in the game. Also I loved the Mortal Kombat 2 cameo. And of course Ellie’s favorite character would be Mileena.
Tragically yesterday Annie Wershing who played Tess in the game passed away at 45 due to cancer. So when they showed the flashback with Tess and Joel I cried. Rest In Peace Annie Wershing. Thank you so much for that opening tribute!❤❤

It is NOT sensible to stand out in the open, completely exposed, while engaging in armed conflict, especially when you are not wearing protective clothing, such as a ballistic vest/shield/helmet, etc. That is suicide. Two top things to do when you are engaged in a shootout- 1- seek cover, and 2- seek an exit strategy in case you are overcome by the enemy. But I guess they wanted the "drama" effect in the show.
