Very cool to see the old build and talking about what could've been done better. I think you did a great job and you can always learn tricks to get better. Thanks for sharing!
I think you did pretty awesome on this, and yet it is cool to see how far you’ve come! The growth is apparent. Very cool of you to do this critique. It shows that it’s possible to improve. And you addressed the flaws in a straightforward way, not self deprecating and not hiding either. Thanks!
U have courage my friend. No way I'd have attempted that 2-3 years into car audio. Because you weren't afraid of making mistakes, you learned a lot faster and got way ahead of the curve and cut the time it took you to become an expert. So good on you. Thanks for sharing
I loved watching this. Sure, it wasn't your finest work (using today's standards)--but it just shows how much you've learned. It's also helpful because we can see better why when you say to do something (or not do something), why you say that--it's because you've tried it, and it worked (or didn't work). So, while by today's standards maybe it doesn't look great, for where you were at the time, it was an incredible build! While it would be really cool to see you rebuild that box using all of your accumulated knowledge since then, your other videos showing your box builds are just as amazing and insightful. So thank you for posting!
You have make me to perfect my Amp connection, don't skip to get the perfect connection to your Amp. No money, no effort, and that have you thought me 5 years ago,. Man, that you still around is so great,, thanks bro, keep the vids up
Making a fiberglass volcano box was my dream box back in 08 when I was a freshman in high school and now that I have the tools and money i might make it
I’ve watched a few of your videos. Good stuff. You’ve mentioned a few times that you prefer not to use screws and just use glue. If you haven’t already, you should check out a biscuit joiner. Using biscuits between panels in tandem with wood glue will yield you even greater rigidity without additional screws. Just a suggestion. Anyway, thanks for sharing all your work and instructions.
I think being kinda new to building custom boxes it looks pretty good. Now that you have more experience and way better tools you should redo it. I not sure about other subscribers but I would love to see a video of what the box would look like if you remade it and did all changes and tricks on what you said in this video.
That would be a pretty cool video to see. With all the new tools and know-how, just what those little differences could make in the final build would be awesome. Also, would you even need the fiber glass to make the volcanos anymore?
I wish MTX was still the brand they used to be. 15-20 years ago when I was a teenager they were in their prime. They were right up there with JL and Rockford. Now they seem to a budget option similar to Pioneer. My buddy had 2 MTX 12s in a Mitsubishi Lancer that absolutely pounded and sounded great.
28:25 All the wires connected to the amp: I would secure them to the same surface the amp is secured to, right in front of the terminals, so there could be a little slack in the wires at the connection point instead of there being tension on the connectors of the amp, like we see here. This was a great video for learning the difference between amateur and professional.
Around 1030 you showed the air bubbles on the front there and I wanted to add that it looked like you applied the glass on top of the fleece and did your first resin coat in one step. It's best to resin the fleece let it set then sand that down then start laying down the glass matting at that point. Much stronger and easier to work with, it lays down much better doing it in two steps! That's a cool design on the box though I dig it!
Omg I remember learning this lesson a couple years ago, whew, like Dad said just because you can do something doesn't mean you should, only took 4 builds time!
It's so cool that you're showing us your old builds. I must say, they do loo a little bit better than my systems from 20 years ago😁 PS. Thanks for all the helpful info in your videos, we appreciate it👍🏻
Seeing your builds now I can definitely see how you can critique your previous work, I'm a noob to all this so I know it looks WAY better than anything I could pull off. But these videos are inspiring for sure.
You should definitely remake that box now! With your current skillset and toolset, I bet youd make it exactly the way you originally intended it to look! With some updated tricks of course lol.
I can’t find information on what’s better wood or fiberglass I tend to lean more on wood for sound quality fiberglass are or is for places that Wood can articulate to.
When I was fabricating enclosures like this, I would frequently, purposely get mat into the cutout area for the sub when reinforcing from the inside. The key is to remember when it was the correct time for the resin to flash, and you can cut away all of that excess with an olfa knife.
Man I've been there. I basically started working at a shop from being a hang around, working part-time. I did a couple of fiber glass boxes the same way but with far less planning 😅 I started in 2001 so there was stuff out there but nothing like today. Just the Router bit video you made is invaluable. It took someone bringing in a costume for replare for me to see how some things were done. Because I knew nothing really. 😌
Do you have / will you ever make a video on how to do a fiberglass molded box to fit in a trunk corner, or any similar locations? I've seen other videos out there but I've always looked to your channel over the past 7 years for good tutorials with even better tips and info.
Very nice self critique video, but that build looks very good! I get your point make sure you plan and spend extra time building the foundation so you spend less time finishing and the end result looks better!
Great video you know ive used so many of your useful guides and tools on how to build and how to implement your techniques has greatly helped me in quality and efficiency I can't thank you enough!! P.s I would love to see you do a wall build either 4th, 6th or flat wall bass reflex ported style and some kind of a high-end front stage sq with a full 12 channel dsp with 3 or 4 sets of 3 way fully active components I think it would be epic!!!
Well as far as amp on sub box. I have 2 zvx inverted into a solid ply box and I have literally held my hand on the box itself and it honestly has less vibration than anywhere else on the vehicle. I went so far as setting small item on the box and it moved less than my phone on the center and an object on each side dash. The metal really flexes compared. I mounted tight and I’ll take it up and I touch the amp and again it still feels less vibrating than anywhere else so i say it really depends on the build itself and the vehicle.
So I see a few ways you could have made that middle better without changing much at all. You could have taken the shape of the amp to make that piece that is hiding the seem be more cohesive. It would be an I shape instead of a blob. Something like this ][ like the side of the amp. Also, you could have used four spacers to lift the amp enough to run the wires under the amp and then behind the box. It would have been a lot cleaner and cost pennies. With the side benefit of some vibration reduction and air flow. I'm with you on the zipties and would also add that not only should they always be trimmed flush but the junctions away from view so they look even cleaner. They need to be rotated down if seen.
Love the videos. I’m looking for plans for a 2010 f150 super crew cab. Do you have one? For two 10”. Also, what do you think about euphoria subs? What’s the best budget sub?
I have 2011 supercrew and I just have a 36 wide box behind driver seat. I can still put down the 1/3 seat so 1 can sit back there. In a real need I can remove the subs entirely and I have some small 10’s I can dump in but honestly in years I’ve never had to do this. In that box I have 2 zvx inverted into the box porting out the top and it’s pretty amazing with a taramps 5k bass I tried under seat junk but if you’re a bass head with an f150 you have 2 options. Blow though from the bed and have a permanent unusable bed or fold that 2/3 section up and go as big as you can in a solid box. Mine like I say will slide out with 2/3 people and I could pop it in my bed or leave it home. Then if really desperate I can toss 2 kicker 10 under the seat and connect the 1000 watt amp up that I left mounted and disconnected for a mild bass. I never wanted a blow though as it’s already a short bed so take half that away and meh it’s now not a truck. And I still wanted the option of 3 in the back in a push. If you have little kids that may not work but my kids are all adults and my odds of carrying more than 2 passengers is low. For me so low I’ll probably never need to remove the sub. It’s beastly heavy as well so random crackheads say no thanks that Shhhh be too heavy.
Forgot to add I keep an agm battery in the truck cab as well. Lol. I had that in the bed but I like it better inside the cab in a battery box as I can keep the cover off the bed without something thinking hmmm a free battery in there.
There are plans out there for 4 10’s under the seats but honestly I really don’t think they’d have the air volume for any sub hitting hard enough without inverting and then the floor space is gone or you got feet on your subs. My setup I can reach and touch my sub booty to check temperatures but they run cool butt up therefore I can push them harder.
Best budget subs I say scar. ZVX 12’s are under 300 bux shipped. ZVX Is suspiciously close in name to ZV5 from sundown. Lol. X being 10 in roman numerals. Lol idk. 1500 watt rms each. 3000 together. NVX also makes some decent hitting subs with the benefit of actually a really great sound quality as well. I have 2 pair their 12’s here the 300 rms budget and the 600rms mid line and a pair 600 rms ones hit hard on a kicker cxa.1200.1 The mid line are like 80 each shipped. Will never hit like the skar. Once you’re up to like sundown yes they are great but double the price of skar I can’t see the difference being that big. If I were building a sound demo car then yeah I’d go sundown or wolfram or something extreme for extreme use.
28:27 Wood screws to mount the amp to the wood, and mounting the amp to the box itself, and whatever is going on with that first (left) positive speaker terminal and wire connection on the amp, are the other things you didn't like, right?
Looks fine from far, but far from fine. Ha ha ha... just giving you a hard time. Looks damn good for one of your "early" builds! I noticed it seems like you had a lot of tension on the speaker output cables, which I try to avoid personally. And the zip only holding some of the wires bugs me... ha. Other than those I didn't notice anything that was horrible. Again, especially for an early "just starting" build!
Mtx 9500 12s for the win I still have my 2 12s I purchased from circuit city back in 2003 I only mounted those subs in my hummer h2 lease at the time those subs are still stiff and I haven’t ran em sincr 05
Very cool to see the old build and talking about what could've been done better. I think you did a great job and you can always learn tricks to get better. Thanks for sharing!

It’s amazing how much you learn by building custom speaker cabinets. It’s really a practice in problem solving.
Making a fiberglass volcano box was my dream box back in 08 when I was a freshman in high school and now that I have the tools and money i might make it

Revisited rebuild that box with the knowledge you have it be fun
I think being kinda new to building custom boxes it looks pretty good. Now that you have more experience and way better tools you should redo it. Nice video ! I recently upgraded from my 2 12 MTX 5500 dvc's that I had pounding ever since 2006.
They are great subs 💎❤️ got 3 of 10inch

All the companies that were great seem to have fallen off. Sad times....
the ONE thing that got me was the fuses (when u show zip tie).. Got them one up, one down.. should have fuses the same orientation..
😊

Definitely a cool idea to see how you started to where you are now. Great job being brutally honest with yourself. Love the videos.

Also, would be nice to show the importance of different types of body filler, Kitty Hair, your finger, and a glove is magical!!!!!
very nice! Ive always wanted to do this

Love watching your videos like this, gives me inspiration and knowledge of what not to do when I go and start making my own stuff.
Were those thunder 7500 or 8500? I had two 12 inch thunder 7500 's in a 98 Eldorado and the slammed like hammers. Miss those subs.

Better than I would do ! Wire strain much ? Pretty sure that’s what you saw.
Cool, nice to see the 'beginnings'.. you've come a Llooong ass way.. still looked decent tho...
Skills even back then to have only had hand tools to work with
Man I've been there. I basically started working at a shop from being a hang around, working part-time. Recognizing your mistakes is where you learn!
Man this makes me miss my old directed audio installs that I had

It was definitely a good build for the experience but the amp should be on a amp rack or something plus the wires were pulled so tight
What I mean is full box enclosure not like what you’re doing here to get the face.
Never thought it looked like a volcano until now lol.
JBL build in Toyota....
at 28:40 there is no wire farrels
The speaker wire to the amp is a little weird. Pulled too tight and one wire not even installed. 28:44
I think your to hard on yourself. Looks all good to me.
Yeah he criticized his cut I mean meh it’s not going to show.

What would you take for them? I'd be willing to give you at least 400 apiece.
