I remember when I was in labor with my oldest Son, it was April Fools Day....I went to the hospital and one of my nurses that was coming in to check on me, patted me on my leg and looked up at the clock and said....Just hold him in until after 12!!!! It will be April 2nd...Marvin Gaye's Birthday! I hqd him a 9:25 a.m that morning April 2 1994.
Bob Watson, he seems like he was very shy...and a little awkward. he didn't know what he had going on i don't think. he was hot!! and not just the women at Motown loved him, the women all over the world loved him. :)
I'll always remember my Dad singing this song when was a kid and when be at work walking around blowing this song all day long, and now I can blow it just as good as He and Marvelous Marvin, and always Love them both
This was from Shebang that was hosted by Casey Kasem who over the Years played alot of Motown Songs through his American Top 40 Radio Show that I listened to religiously from 10:00 to 2:00 AM as a kid. He also grew up in Detroit, MI and attended Wayne State University that Diana Ross's Father Fred attended.
Pride and Joy was a personal song for Marvin! He wrote the song while in love with Anna Gordy (Berry's sister) and both got their wish- they got married!
What an odd question! I'm a Brit so not really qualified to answer but I'll do my best. This was recorded in 1963 in the USA. There was still real segregation between black and white people and all the TV studios were white owned so to get the exposure Gaye had to play to a white audience. I'm sure that he also played to totally black audiences in theatres and suchlike, but it seems strange that you would jump to such a conclusion on the evidence of a single show.

Were there no black audiences for this talented man to sing to?
