this is an incredible documentary this guy put together. the portrait the director paints of winehouse really hits hard at the end. well edited, great flow, amazing video and messages of amy. in hindsight, it makes her passing that much more tragic after you finish the documentary. highly recommended.
AlexIsDelusional That's a romantic notion & I couldn't help but notice your username with a comment like that but the reality is u have to make a choice, get busy livin or dying, trust me i know addiction very personally, it's brutal.
Charlotte Mcnaught That's great but I never said that it wasn't her choices that led to her ultimate demise. I just said that the world consumed her, and it really did. If you watch the documentary, you can see that every single aspect of her life (whether it be her career or her friends or her husband) was taking a toll on her so she turned to drugs and alcohol. Those were her choices, yes, but that doesn't take away from the fact that seemingly everyone in her life wanted something from her, wanted to benefit from her career. So, in essence, the world (and everything she had to deal with) consumed her. P.S. You don't have to "know addiction very personally" to know it's brutal but thanks for your personal input there.
Not going to say I was a fan but she certainly had more charisma and personality than some of the morons in the music business. She didn't give a crap when in interviews, spoke her mind and did as she pleased. Musicians these days are generic, boring puppets to record company's. This is what I think when thinking of Amy. I'd like see the film now as her life was certainly interesting.
Thank you. She didn't really acknowledge her fans, cuz she didn't think she was someone who deserved to be worshipped. She truly thought of herself as a musician. Not an idol or some kind of beacon of light.
008Invisibleman As says I don't really know that much about her as I'm not a fan of that genre of music. What I say I stand by though that anytime I seen her in interviews on TV she came across quite sweet, shy at times but very honest. She also is one of those independent people who go for success through their own determination and hard work. She had my respect as she wasn't like the generic pop stars we see today, likes of one direction ect
Edward Bernayse666 She was a very distinctive singer in that if you heard her on radio you'd know straight away it was her. I can't comment on the music side really as I'm mainly into rock music and I don't tend to listen to mainstream stuff. Yes though she had a unique voice
all the best artist are tortured souls. something about their condition brings out something else that all humans can relate to. its as real as people can be.
I respect that & can understand where you're coming from but what kind of fucking interview ending was this? seriously Amy would flip off Vice for this
Watched the biopic a few days ago, it really sheds a new light on Amy and rounds her as a character. It portrays her as a human with extraordinary talent, not just a drunken puppet.
VICE That was a great interview. I still haven't seen the documentary but that makes me wanna, job well done, and big up to the director, it sounds like he was very honest in this interview and it gives me faith that the doc will be an honest portrayal as well.
***** what are you actually saying? That this doesn't matter because she's Jewish? What are you on about? What about the death of unarmed black people at the hands of police officers? There are lots of deaths we can talk about, doesn't mean we shouldn't talk about this one.
VICE I listened to the interview of Amy's father on LBC and he was fuming about the way it was directed - maybe to balance this shit out you should play his comments on the way closest friends with positive comments were ignored or miss represented. Her Father was really pissed off with the shit this man produced!
From what I've heard her father didn't care about her and exploited her for money so maybe that's why hes's so pissed off. It makes him look like a dick? I'll watch it before I passs judgment but I'd like to see that interview with her dad as well just to see if he looks justifiably upset or if he just looks butt-hurt and defensive cos the truth is out. Slug Slugster
Mitch didn't like this amazing documentrey because it showed her truth and that's hard for a parent to watch such a saddening demise. He was in denile when she was alive and seems still is. So sad. Rip amy.
I’m a huge fan of music and I love it all . Back to Black is one of the greatest albums ever recorded . Too bad we couldn’t get more . She reminds me of Janis Joplin , not in the sound of the music but just in how she was so unique and came and went so fast 😢😢RIP Amy ❤
The interviewer is horrible. He comes off like he's yelling at the guy being interviewed. He needs some serious practice and couldn't he at least dress up a little?
Dead Betty All gay guys yell like that in their attempt to sound like a woman. And yes its annoying. I know this is way off subject but "why do gay men who aren't trans attempt to talk like women?" If anyone can answer. Because they aren't denying being attracted to the same sex and still claim to be male so why attempt to walk and gesture and talk in that manner? It's like a deep put-on valley girl sound...I dunno confusing tho very confusing. The only women I see talk that way are the Kardashians. Well I guess it isn't so bad when they ask to see your makeup compact mirror....can you imagine a guy with a deep voice saying "yo lemme see yo make-up" or " yeah so how does this dress look does it make my butt look big?" Yep too confusing for me.
This is a great interview. I still haven't seen the documentary but this makes me wanna, he was very honest in this interview and it gives me faith that the doc will be an honest portrayal as well.
True indeed I really liked her first time I heard her talk and always liked her and felt for her. But dont feel bad she rose to the top of the world in her life and we are all gonna die Rest in peace Beautiful Amy
It's so common to say that hopefully her story will become a cautionary tale, but the reality is that I don't want anyone who was around her to be absolved from their responsibility. Amy's gone. That's it, the end. There's no reason for fckin analysis bcuz it wasn't the 1940's, we all know it's a disease that is quite often fatal. Yet everyone who witnessed what was happening to her, just kept dancing. Especially the British press for Christ sake, they'd already hounded Diana to death, you'd think at least a few of them had developed a conscience. She was ill, fragile and desperately needed help, yet the band played on. Imagine the song that she would have written about her own life and death? There's no chance of hearing that now. I'm so sorry we all failed you beautiful Amy 💔💔💔💔.
I just want to throw it out there. Parents make a big influence from the start. Also, it's really common to see addiction or disorders as just something to "get over it" or "just stop", as by many people don't realize it is very much a mental disorder as is with depression, diabetes, etc. If someone is around you with that, you best try to understand that it's nowhere easy and that they need people to understand them. It's sad because it's something you have to go through to truly understand, the withdrawals, the rock bottom, the pain, but atleast trying to understand and being there for them is a hugee step.
The interview is very badly done, better off let a robot interview Asif. I don't think he has seen the film before the interview, doesn't feel that he cares about the subject either. What an unprofessional job from the Vice team!
I think she was unlucky with people around who couldn't take her out from the abyss she was falling into. Their parents, her boyfriend and husband, all really close to her people didn't brought her to light she could grow from into somebody she would like about herself. Instead of that they brought her "back to black", to her abyss, a black hole where felt really good, but it wasn't something good for her. I think her father didn't really know her, same as her mother, because if they would, they would step between and said god damn NO!!!! But they were not like that, they never taught her to be good to herself in a good way. She felt into depression in the very young age and started to slowly kill herself. Music was only thing which made her shine in her life, but even that beautiful and untouched piece of her got corrupted and ugly and in the end she hated it. In short she was a very fragile individual, somebody who should get tons of real love and advice in right approach how to better live her life. She missed to understand that most important person who must take care of herself is her. She was never taught to love herself as she truly was and that's very important for the kid she really was inside. RIP Amy, its very sad you are gone, but it's how you wanted things to go and there wasn't anybody stronger than you to help you to go right direction, RIP princess...
take your hat off when interviewing someone. jesus, learn some manners. actually you should take that hat off and toss it in a bin, win win situation for you.
Yeah she's not the greatest singer . But no one and never heard or saw a person can tell you his feeling the way she do it . She tell truth . Smell. Idea .And the way her heart beat in that moment.
Does anybody think it's strange that the director of this this film is being interviewed by some hipster with his hat on backwards? Is this a professional network?
yodasodaskoda I think he should be more professional, not wearing a suit necessarily. He should not look like he's about to go play B Ball with his friends...
No lol it's Vice, it's clearly not a "professional network". Not that Vice doesn't do some awesome stuff, but a few odds and ends get a bit watered down, and a bit of their journalism is like what buzzfeed is to news. But it's hip and gets views among the young crowd, so they're obviously doing well for themselves.
vice is always awesome and rarely has a bad interviewer but this guy sounds like hes telling the questions to you instead of asking them. piss poor job but an interesting interview idea.
Amy Winehouse was not the most attractive girl ever to some she was but not to me, but I could say with the upmost confidence that she was interesting, and an amazing artistic gift that the world overlooked. It is sad that she will be more known for her personal problems than her music.. R.I.P
Interesting, but the interviewer makes me think when a child keeps asking "why", repeatedly. What did not help was that you could of dressed more appropriately or at least remove the frigg'in cap! Unprofessional. You looked like a man-child. Other than that, the questions were good and I enjoyed it.
Ffs good audio is everything, no matter what video you're making. How the fuck could this happen, the audio in the interview is so bad. How high was the dude who approved this?
Yeah, because I'm gonna take very seriously the guy with his hat turned backwards and no cue card reading skill or personality that has probably never studied film or made a film or reviewed film. Nice try.
That's the SAD part. The Doctors TOLD HER that her years of bulimia had damaged her muscles and her heart SO BADLY that IF she drank again ...SHE WOULD DIE. She didn't listen, didn't care - or was still in the throws of her addiction & drank herself to death. What a waste of a talented beautiful soul. The media always wanting to sell it as drugs. They missed the opportunity to shine a giant light on eating disorders and help people with those issues - probably like Any might have wanted. And SHAME on the music industry ...they seem to be a meat grinder that tear the artists to pieces ...but they are all making money - so screw the artists life..they will make more money when the artists dies. GOD AWFUL ..they don't change....like they need to.
"Would we have back to black without her emotional spiral?" hey next time you could ask him would we have had Rehab without her drug problem. Just a bit of criticism, think through the questions more and get rid of the backwards hat if you want to be taken seriously.

Loveliest comment I've seen online.
So true.
Ordovice Celt Hear , hear well stated!
Ordovice Celt Correctomundo!
Reading your comment 8 years later.
And yeah…
I miss her. She should be here recovering like many other like her do, such a shame
Amy was a beautiful person that the world consumed. RIP
I agree !
She was a weak person who consumed because the world was not beautiful enough for her.
fightfanian know her well did you?

i normally listen to rock music too but she was the only mainstream pop singer that i actually liked.

Agreed
Joe B that and they don't like being stared at by strangers everywhere they go.

David Lessard huh
Watched the biopic a few days ago, it really sheds a new light on Amy and rounds her as a character. It portrays her as a human with extraordinary talent, not just a drunken puppet.
Such a beautiful documentary. Amy was a lost angel, such a sad loss
We recently sat down with Asif Kapadia, director of _Amy_.

Okay, just watched the interview and Slug Slugster you may be right, her dad seemed pretty righteously pissed off.
Such a good movie! I saw it two days ago and I can't get over it.
There will never be another of her like. God bless you Amy Winehouse and may you rest in peace in a better place and sing among the Angels.👼🎶
seems like the interview and interviewee aren't even in the same room
fascinating, even more compelled to watch the film
Torontoista me too, I didn't think I'd want to see but this interview made me REALLY want to see it haha
Torontoista she was a good jazz singer.
She is my favorite female singer. So soul full. Such a great writer. RIParadise
Mitch didn't like this amazing documentrey because it showed her truth and that's hard for a parent to watch such a saddening demise. He was in denile when she was alive and seems still is. So sad. Rip amy.
What a great doc! We had the amy whinehouse foundation came to our school and said some deep stuff. NEVER DOING DRUGS!!!

Love the people that come on this video just to bash her or make disgusting jokes & pretend they're so insightful. Get a life.

Very nice interview with two very competent people. Thank you for your work!
I love you Amy, I'll never forget you. And you'll live on through my music
RIP
My Queen. 💕
I have barely any idea who Amy Winehouse was (because I really don't follow popular music or listen to the radio), but this film sounds really neat.
Thank you for this, Vice. Respect to the lioness. :(
This world misses you Amy! R.I.P
It would have been nice to see her make a recovery and live passed the age of 27

The interview is very badly done, better off let a robot interview Asif. I don't think he has seen the film before the interview, doesn't feel that he cares about the subject either. What an unprofessional job from the Vice team!
Senna was a GREAT film...i can't wait to see this...
They tried to make her go to rehab, she said no no no!
miss HER
Might have to check this out.
Amy ♡
Has anyone seen the documentary? Does her MD talk about her having chronic atrial fibrillation?
Yes, she does. I just watched the documentary, it's very good and very moving.
Can't wait to see the film!

Crass ans no class!
***** a Britt commenting on taste, like a religious person commenting on reason.
Lol your profile picture is so disgusting ...
sit down with big Lo aka yfn los music out of Charlotte nc
take your hat off when interviewing someone. jesus, learn some manners. actually you should take that hat off and toss it in a bin, win win situation for you.
kook in the white cap ruined it for me.
this interview felt rushed, but it does a great job of promoting the movie.
Yeah she's not the greatest singer . But no one and never heard or saw a person can tell you his feeling the way she do it . She tell truth . Smell. Idea .And the way her heart beat in that moment.
Why is this being lauded as better than Montage of Heck?
Cuz this film wasn't orchestrated by a conniving bitch like Courtney Love?
The bad world ,the strange darck people kill this buttefly, this rose ,this angel ! Her time will come as she said !
Why is the vice reporter yelling and another said why does it feel like the interview and interviewee aren't even in the same room?
The interviewer sounded relay scripted, he needed to loosen up more and not be so robotic.
Give the guy a break. That was probably his 30th press interview that day. He even looks worn-out.
SallyTheSeahorse
If there was 29 interviews shown before him then I have no issue, but f this was a big deal then more should have been given.
vice- please don't use this guy to interview anyone else. It's almost funny he's So bad 😄
Does anybody think it's strange that the director of this this film is being interviewed by some hipster with his hat on backwards? Is this a professional network?
yodasodaskoda I think he should be more professional, not wearing a suit necessarily. He should not look like he's about to go play B Ball with his friends...
baghead777 no this is vice and that's their appeal. too much formality and professionalism comes across as dishonest.
I.love u amy
where can i watch amy?
don't you just hate it when the rich and famous don't get what they want or have "a hard life"
Rip amy 🌹🕯️❤️
vice is always awesome and rarely has a bad interviewer but this guy sounds like hes telling the questions to you instead of asking them. piss poor job but an interesting interview idea.
I dig the interview not so much the host he comes off robotic other than that great interview
I didn't really like Amy winehouse, until I was forced to see the documentary, gave me a respect for her
Waiting for a stream to go live :/
I can't get over on how bad the interviewer is at asking the questions. He sounds and looks like the director isnt there.
Amy Winehouse was not the most attractive girl ever to some she was but not to me, but I could say with the upmost confidence that she was interesting, and an amazing artistic gift that the world overlooked. It is sad that she will be more known for her personal problems than her music.. R.I.P

RIP Amy :/ :(
love is a losing game
chriss thank you so much
the interviewer sounds amateur
Why not focus on the big picture?
Cheng Gao Don't tell me, let me guess, because he's American?
I think the interviewer would feel more at home in the bushes outside a primary school
His work certainly isn't "amateur". Don't judge a book by its cover!
Yeah, because I'm gonna take very seriously the guy with his hat turned backwards and no cue card reading skill or personality that has probably never studied film or made a film or reviewed film. Nice try.
All the news you could have collected no disrespect but what the point when everyone knows the truth about the story
People always make money of others life.
who tf hired the interviewer?
deep bruh

HAHAHAHA that end tho...
I tried to listen to the vice reporter but only could make it through the first question of his. Maybe negative and I'm sorry.
Slovenija!
"Would we have back to black without her emotional spiral?" hey next time you could ask him would we have had Rehab without her drug problem. Just a bit of criticism, think through the questions more and get rid of the backwards hat if you want to be taken seriously.
being different is cool until your" trying" to be different in order to be cool , vice
that was a really weird way to end that video. Interviewer was bad.
i wanna see this so bad
Its funny how I watched videos of her months before her death and saw all the horrible comments wrote about her then that week of her death I watched some of those same videos and all of a sudden every one loved Amy... People are full of shit! Rest easy Amy
OK.... 3:28 this shows her singing with a METH pipe in her hand WTF????!!!! CAN someone pls check that out and verify what my eyes were seeing ....
Dara st.angelo I believe it was from her friends 14 birthday party, it was a lollipop.
hmmm..im thinkin meth pipe ...its clear and ive never seen this kind of white/clear lolipop..takes one to know one ..ya know
Dara st.angelo it was a lollipop though.
in the documentary she offers her friend a lick of that lollipop and her friend says she doesn’t want a lick from her slobbered lolly. She wasn’t even on any drugs during that time.
ummmmmm yeah okay ...i guess you dont consider alcohol a drug..................
Dara st.angelo it’s a lollipop wtf...
I really want to like this project and I appreciative the creative process behind it, but I can't help but feel this is exploitative and in capitalistic aim. I'm sorry.
That ending was a little abrupt.
The interviewer sounds really rehearsed
Fiona Apple is still hanging on.
