On a note related to pride, having low confidence is just as detrimental to your growth as being too prideful. When you have low confidence, you disregard every mistake you make as being a "bad player", resulting in you not learning anything. When analyzing your matches, you need to respect yourself enough to see that there are reasonable explanations for your flaws.
This issue has been affecting not just my play, but many things in my life and I am taking steps to change.
1) Stick to a main/Don't Cheese with weird matchups
2) Work on your movement
3) Stick to the basics/Don't be super -Hax$- err...I mean Flashy
4) Analyze your matchups (Focus on: Losing Neutral / What their reads say)
5) Play to learn, not play to win friendlies!
He didn't really say stick to the basics. He rather said learn and perfect your fundamentals and don't waste time learning how to do 10 multishines. Also, for self analysis, he also said to look at your punishes and ask yourself if you could have extended it further (9/10 times you could have, such is the nature of this game)

Yes! YES MOVEMENT!!! I'm a Ganon main and I worked SOOOO hard on my movement. I even manage to make a tech video for it! My movement gave me SOOOO much millage, I even won my local Arcadian and caught up with the guys who were a couple years ahead... Just remember fundamentals.

I'm assuming you're a Ganon main, it may help other characters too. The easiest movement option I found that remains still very practical was platform wavelands. The timing is consistent, helps his neutral game, and grabs ledge assuming you're facing towards stage. Just BACKWARD full hop through platform and practice your timing. DON'T double jump, I found in the current process of making my Ganon tutorial it's faster by like 4 or less frames? It's faster, trust me. And more consistent. And if you're late on the timing, you get a no impact land on battle and Dream Land!! Win win.
I'd move onto his ledge dash next if you get down to mastering platform wavelands!!

Black Tiger - Repie wavelands are so huge for ganon since you can more consistently hit those full length wavelands and his aerial mobility isn't spectacular. Love seeing a ganon in motion
Black Tiger - Repie Plup is my favorite player brcause his movement is SO CRISP! He makes Samus anf Luigi look like racecars.
One of my good friends plays Puff and after about 20 minutes of friendlies I confronted him about the fact that he very rarely went for rests. I told him to not care about beating me in friendlies and to just learn his rest setups from stuff like when I have to upB to stage as Falcon or when I get put in knockdown from a missed tech. He hesitantly followed my advice and missed almost every rest for the first 5 games or so where I crushed him, but after that he slowly started hitting more and more rests until he could hit 1-2 per game fairly consistently. Play to expose yourself to difficult situations in friendlies and you'll get better extremely quickly.

I'd like to add - play for fun. Only focusing on improving can burn you out, when you play for fun you'll be more inclined to try new things and might discover new tools, or application of existing tools.
Also, I think playing other characters is a really important step in learning the game on a deeper level, it helps you understand your opponents neutral options and how to beat them. It's not something you want to do right away but it can be really useful especially if you're playing against someone that plays your main character - since you can implement strategies that you haven't figured out how to beat, and see what someone else does which you can implement in your own gameplay. Take falco lasers for example, having trouble beating lasers? pick falco and spam lasers and see how all the opponents in your area hand lasers then implement it into your own gameplay.
Sometimes learning another character can also give extra spice to your main character - tech skill that might have been not worth learning or not obvious to learn might become an extra tool for your main, playing marth might make you better at using dash dance grab as an option, playing captain falcon might give you better awareness of when it's a good time to roll out of pressure, playing samus might give you better ground spacing with tilts.
Taking a break from your main character to work on something else can be refreshing, like I said before you can get burnt out, stuck in bad habits in your neutral and punish game, taking a break by having fun messing around with other characters can give you fresh eyes - allowing you to see your bad habits or not make them anymore, whilst also giving you insight into other components of the game.

I am currently having a hard time picking a character. I've been grinding peach for about a month and I was having second thoughts. I don't know who else to play but it's been messing with me a lot today. Watching this has help me get back on track. I'm back to practicing peach and I feel better about it now, thank you Armada.

One of the best pieces of advice i can give is to watch the pros, sounds obvious but don't watch and enjoy but watch and learn, I've watched m2k play as marth and i analyze his movements and ways of attack and defense to better mine, I've also watched hbox and learned to be a better puff, better movements and rest setups, just watch and take what you can from them and use it in your play style some moves might be better than you realize in some situations, learn how to better your edge guarding, movements, just anything you can
I will say though I'm no great player, i have bettered myself by doing this but some things are difficult for me to add or change to my play style since I'm so used to it, another thing i will say is use a character you're comfortable with you learn the character faster as it just clicks with you
Just do it in friendlies is a great tip. My friend and I will get together and play like 4 hours of friendlies and we'll go for insane stuff to see if it works because it's friendlies! That's the time for experimenting and seeing what you can do and what you can get away with. These are some great tips overall, awesome video!

I like to have a main and a side chatacter that I eork on when I grt bored with my main. Practice with one, switch to the other and practice some more, rinse and repeat. Right now I main Samus and practice Falco on the side.

In frendlies, I will try to do perfect ledgedashes 90% of the time, even if I SD 35% of the time lol.
I agree with the first one he said. Me and my friend were always even, we were exactly 50 50. Though, I trained a lot and stuck with just one character while he would play like 5 or more at a time. Long story short, he hasn't beaten me in months and I never win by any less than a 2 stock.

I main Falco, and have played Melee competitively for around 2 1/2 years. I've only gone to a handful of locals, and I went to Smash Valley VI. The best I have ever played was at SV6 when I took 2 stocks off of Qerb in both of our first matches of the day. Regardless of that, *I have never taken a single game off of anybody.* I have recently been considering changing my main because of my stiff lack in progress, but I really just wish I could get good at Falco. Every single time I hit up a local I end up really disappointed after spending countless hours practicing only to get 2-0'd twice and gain almost nothing from going.
It's probably because you're not going to enough locals and not playing against enough real life people. When you go to locals, stick around and play lots of friendlies. Try to become friends with both players above and around your skill level and play matches with them outside of tournaments. You'd be surprised how quickly you'll improve when you have real life 1v1 practice.
And btw I'm also a Falco main. Stick with it, he's one of the best options in the game and he's by far the most fun character to play imo. For practicing by yourself, I would suggest setting up a level 1 CPU Bowser with handicap on up to 9 and changing your handicap to 1, then changing the launch rate to 0.5. Fight him on FD and just practice doing L-cancelled aerials into shine and up tilt on him over and over. Excellent practice that's really been helping me combo better lately.

For example, I never get to play vs players, only very rarely a few of my friends who don't know any 'techniques' want to play a few friendlies, so from now on I'll make better use of those.
I have a question about the whole 'just play one character' thing: I'm not set on what character I want to main yet, how do I choose which one fits me best? So far I think I play the best with Falco, I have the most fun with Capt. Falcon, I like to play fox every now and then because I think it pushes me the hardest to train new techskill. I also sometimes pull out marth/sheik/puff but much less frequent than the previous 3. I almost always play vs regular cpu since I don't have any mods yet.
Any further advice?
Crazy tech skill will only let you cheese your way so far, it really comes down to fundamentals, with that tech skill coming out as needed.

Tbh, I try to win in friendlies whenever there's a rotation because I don't want to sit out for a game, if I can help it. lol
I've started melee september 2016 and I have an horrible mindset about friendlies and characters, I was always blaming the stupid idea : "this character doesn't fit" so i barely tried half the top 12. I'm conscient of this flaw of mine but i feel like i can't overcome that salt that's makes me sad after losing most of my friendlies.. I know it's fucking stupid to think like that and i really want to change durably on my mindset to get better. Thank you for your advices, hearing them from you makes me more than ever want to overcome my demons !
I feel like if you're having mentality issues with the game it's possible those issues stem from something outside the game. Like a person struggling with depression will find themselves negatively responding to a lot of situations more frequently. In that case it's better to work on the psychological issues you're experiencing rather than in-game issues.
Not saying you're depressed or that this is what your problem is specifically, but I've met a lot of players who don't realize that some of their in-game problems really stem from real life problems

Not expecting Armada to respond, but if anyone could give input that'd be cool. Basically, I've mained Fox since I was a kid before Brawl came out, but I've only been into the competitive scene for about two years. Anyway, I've started to notice terrible habits with Fox. I know people say to stick to one character, but lately I've been maining another character totally different than Fox so I can break those habits. For one I cannot rely on a better character this way, and two I can't rely on something as good as shine to get me out of shield pressure. This is with the intentions to go back to Fox, but I feel like it may help me move forward in the long run by breaking habits. Make sense, or should I stick with Fox?
BoneyPlatypus that makes some sense but i think in truth you should really just take a short break from melee, maybe a week or so, whilst preferably trying something new in the mean time. Then when you go back, go back and REALLY focus on creating good habits instead. Hope this helps.

idk about the review your own play thing because bad players will think the wrong decision is right or vice versa because they dont have the ability to see why its wrong or right in the first place. This is why in other games coaches say just watch high level players not your own gameplay.
Hey Armada! Your advice is to take a hit as far as possible, but Mango has a punish game of his own that gives the opponent many ways to get out and he still wins against many people because he keeps winning in neutral and in the RPS situations he makes. Would you suggest to try and be like him?

I feel like I'm in that low level for life status. Trying to break out of it. And I really can't seem to find the mindset these other mid-level players around me have. I have my character. But my mindset and thumbs seem to have trouble following up.

Just gotta keep practicing until things become second nature. The only way to get your thumbs to catch up is to practice practice practice. More importantly, when you're practicing, make sure it's good practice. Practice on specific things, with a measurable goal. Don't just "practice," practice wavedashing across the stage, and not missing a single one. Reset every time you miss.
Practice shffl'd aerials and do 10 in a row without fail. If you miss one, you need to work on that specific skill before other skills.
Too many players practice without a specific goal, then wonder why they aren't improving
One thing that helped me was to stop thinking of moves as multiple inputs and start thinking of them as a single action that I had to learn.
Improving is simple. Learn what's holding you back. Practice the solution until it's no longer holding you back. Repeat as necessary.

Drew Giulini Armada made that point in reference to the new wave of players that think only tech skill can make them better players. Borp's success comes from his great neutral game and fully understanding the limits and capabilities of his extra basic toolset. If Borp decided to complement that with expanded tech and movement options, he'd be even more insane.
Drew Giulini what borp does can be considered harder than learning more advanced technology. most top level players may not need it but it simplifies a lot
