do you prefer this type of bike (different riding position, no windshield) over a typical sport type bike?

I think this bike was and is great to learn how to ride well! It’s a lot better to become accustomed to good riding habits like, light grip on the bars, leaning your body weight to the inside of the bike, throttle control, etc. I believe naked are much better for street riding and sports are better for track.
