I love how fantastically genuine your answer is. It takes real integrity to be that honest and open, instead of just going with the “cool” answer. About twelve years before I got bitten by the knife enthusiast bug, I had a job in a warehouse. The knife I used was a hella-cheap box cutter made by Husky. The detent and action were stiff as can be. It was made of cheap, generic materials. But despite me carrying my Spyderco Dragonfly 2 for three years now, I think that old box cutter still has it beat by about a literal mile of actual material cut. I have a channel where I actually upload content (this channel I’m using here is fir watching other people’s videos and making comments) where I discuss what exactly the term “EDC” means, and I explain that fashion sense inevitably factors into what we carry and use. Vanity will always be some slight factor in the tools we carry and use, especially if we think someone else is looking. That’s why I appreciate your honesty so much.
Watching this video is very nostalgic and brought up a lot of good memories and regrets. My first multi tool ever was a PST clone I got from my dad when I was 12. Used that thing for everything. I felt like the coolest kid in the block. When I was older and was working at home depot, I dug it back up. I've since upgraded so there was no "need" for it so I gave it away to a co-worker. I really regret doing that. Now, I gave my 2-year old son a plastic multi tool and trying to teach him to be a handiman, and I still reflect back on that tool my dad gave me.
I know this video is about a couple of years old. I have to say that I’ve been carrying a leatherman since I was 21 years old. 20 years later, a leatherman can still be found on my person today. The difference is I added a Spyderco knife on me as my EDC. I can’t see myself without a multitool on me if I’m going out anywhere. I find myself reaching for my leatherman more than my wallet. lol. Great video. God bless.
Like you my first mutitools was the original PST. I LOVED THAT THING!. I was devastated when I lost it. So my dad got me a Gerber OTF because I lost it. I really like it. And I've always had one ( multi tool) since.

I have a Gerber multitool that I carried in the USMC, its over 30 years old. I did not carry it everyday, but every time I went to the field (deployed) I made sure I had it.
my first multi tool was the Victorinox Evolution S17 i got i think when i was 14 back in 1994.. i still have it but the scales have been burned, the tip of the long blade is broken and i sharpened it but its rounded off and the hole puncher is dull because i had used it to score tiles to break them in half.. i dont use it anymore now.. but its always nice to look back at.. now im using the SOG powerpint! its been really good so far..
....and this is why I watch your videos. It is about the feeling as much as the function and possibly more than the function. Thank you for this video. It sums up so many others thoughts about what a multitool means and the memories it brings. BTW, my first was a Swiss Army knife that I ordered out of a magazine when I was 10 years old. And yes, I checked the mailbox for three months until it finally came.
I lost my first surge at a golf course. Which I think was a gen 1 or an in-between of gen 1 and gen 2. After spending hours cleaning it. Hurt so much. Never carry a tool side ways again. Now got my second surge and won't part with it ever.
Pocket clip it, never without it. Was always sceptical of multitools for some reason, but since getting my surge it's replaced my cold steel rotation entirely
This all sounds very familiar! I got my first MT for Christmas in 1996, a Leatherman Super tool. I was in high school at the time and carried it in my belt every day. Loved it. But then I got a Wave for my birthday some years later, when I was in the army. The Wave really improved on the ease of use and the ST fall into the shadows a bit too long. Not sure what happened to it. Really wish I still had it for its sentimental value. Still have the OG Wave though and that’s a keeper for sure :) It’s something like a “memory stick” at this point. Thanks for the video and sharing your MT origins story!
ahh, the buck tool! Was one of my first multitools as well, given to me from my grandfather. Carried that thing all through my high school and college jobs. It actually helped me land my first job out of college. ( had to bring "an object that means a lot to you" to the interview) and I couldn't think of a better show and tell piece that came with a history all its own. Love to see it means something to others as well!
I got the Victorinox toy swiss army knife to my 3 and 1/2 boy a couple of weeks back. He loves it, and he's profoundly convinced that it is actually better than all my SAKs and multitools (since it's bigger... There is actually some solid logic, there!) Hope he continues to love it up to his first real thing, whatever it will be, and beyond. Nice video, thanks!
@@maxlvledc 🤣yepp!! Unbeatable. And just for the fun of sharing... My first was a Victorinox spartan "economy" (the one without tweezers and toothpick in the scales). Hello, Dominic - great video! I also have a Bucklite tool, model 355, with its original sheath...I bought it to pair it with my Buck 112...the second multi tool I purchased was the PST...with it's original black leather sheath with "Leatherman" embossed in gold letters on it...I hope that you will bring your kids(if you are married & have a family) into what you do by starting them with your first knife...you have an excellent collection...the best part to me is that you are really into multi tools & actually use them...your modding ability is also a skill you can pass on...one of your videos which is my favorite is your restoration & repair of the 1st Gen Surge...I'm sure your friend must be very happy with it...that was a beautiful job...it must be very satisfying to be able to take a tool like that & make it new again...good job!
My mother had a Spartan as gift from my aunt who lives in Germany. It was the imprinter of my multitool obsession. I didn’t even know there were model names then. Later when I wanted an SAK with this and that additional tools then I searched up and learnt that Swisschamp had most of the tools that I might want ever. Then there was the film ‘Speed’ in which Keanu Reeves used a plier based multitool, and then I saw a PST displayed at a shop in an arcade I thought It was the one. Only later I learned that it was a Supertool that Keanu Reeves had used in the movie. PST is the multitool that I used most frequently if not the scissors in the Swisschamp.
Great video! I really like the focus on our memories and stories with our multi tools! It’s such a cool thing to carry around, and I remember getting the leather man surge my 10th birthday! I’ve had that thing for 13 years now and I still use it every time I invent or build something! It had so many tools and was perfect for doing all the spontaneous little kid ideas you have! Honestly it probably inspired me to start building things at an early age and shaped the hobbies I love! I’m only 20 now so I can’t image what some other people’s connections and stories are with their pocket knives and multi tools and all that! Insane to think about, this video was great thanks man!
My multi tool journey is rather recent. I found a leatherman free p2 at a pawn shop and my grandma bought it for me for my birthday, and in my impatience I bought a mossy oak multi tool from walmart that was on sale. Which turned into a dozen or more leathermans
The playdoh multitool is the best! I never knew it existed, if I was given one I may have had the exact same feeling as you did. My first tool given to me was a Victorinox tinker handme down from my Dad. That started my journey. But for me a multitool is not complete without pliers and in 2001 I saw the Original Wave and Juice S2, Juice XE6 in a shop. As a student I can only get one and it was a long decision between the wave and juice S2. I went with the original wave. 22 years later. I still have not found a leatherman worthy to replace the original wave. Yes there are improvements done on the current series, but not enough to replace the original wave. The rebar was very close, but it did not come with a diamond file. Shall I loose the original wave, the rebar might most probably be the closest solution. As I find the regular 3d philips screwdriver to be more versatile and it can access recessed screws. The curl almost got me to purchase and take a gamble on the bit drivers with shorter reach, but the non locking tools turned me off. If they made it locking tools. I would have purchased it. As I got older, the original wave started to feel heavy. So I tandem carry a Leatherman P4 and Victorninox Manager on my keychain. Both of them supplement each other very much. But the P4 pliers are so light duty that I can't do much real work with it. I ended up with a SOG powerpint. In a nutshell the size, weight and usability plus locking tools hands down the best tool selection I have seen in the market right now. I cut off the nail notch of the bottle opener to covert it to a flat screwdriver/pry tool making it complete. Although it has the best tool section, they are not the best expereince. It gets the job done, but the experience is terrible. I don't like the knife shape, poor screwdrivers, poor scissors, etc. Again given the weight and tool selection I accepted the limitation and lived with it. As it's job is to get things done in a pinch. If leatherman made a tool the size of the SOG powerpint I would definitely be getting one and throw away the SOG. Now comes the Arc. It is already perfect except for the price. And given the taste of the SOG powerpint's portability I no longer desire the size. I am going to take my chances and wait. I believe an Arc P2/Curl version should come out. An updated skeletool Or the best of them all a revamped Juice series as this is the only thing missing in Leatherman's current line up. Put locking tools on them and I believe they will be the best selling EDC replacing the powerpint/powerlitre. I have been waiting for 22 years so waiting a few more years shouldn't matter. Come on Leatherman. I have feeling that starting this year will be the release of the next generation leathermans. So I will wait.
Great collection of multitools mate. We jealous.! The first multitool that we handle was a 3 in 1 and it's part of mum's kitchen utensil. It has a cork screw, a bottle opener & a can opener. It was facinating then but looks premitive with current & mordern version. Designs have progress since then so have the prices. Only collectors has more than one multitool as for the rest of us, we just can afford one, maybe two & make it the "best" multitool of all. Great memory lane matey. Cheers.!
I wish they had had a tool like that when I was a boy. Making sand castles etc. with it like you did, would have been so great. I had to be satisfied with butter knives and forks and the like.
What a great video! I was expecting an SAK just not one made by play doh. I still have my very first pocket life my father gave me with the pouch he made for it. Good stuff!!
I'm getting my Dad's military issue Gerber for my birthday this week, it will be my frist mulittool out of El cheapo busts in 2 min bracket. So even if it's not exactly what I really want I'm not getting rid of it.
Just found a cool set of pliers from engineer online. The Engineer PZ-79, they appear to be purpose built lineman pliers with an extra wide plier head.
OMG! I had one of those playdoh SAKs as a kid, or at least a similar model. My brother and I both loved it and fought over it constantly. :-) Great memories.
I did the same thing I used to fish all the time !! I always had a mutitool for years and years!! My favorite for a long time was the Gerber suspension with the bit kit LOVED that tool I still have it but lost the bit kit piece.
I had multitools here and there but I only really got into edc the last couple of years after I joined the military and decided to stick a freebie pst knockoff I had lying around in my pocket for boot camp. That tool is long lost now and I didn't even look back for it. My crunch however, which I got exactly a year ago as a birthday gift from my parents, was stolen from me just this last week. I'm still really bitter about it. It was my best pocket tool by far. Pretty much unstoppable and indestructible. I really miss it.
Those memories are key and so important! I have three sons ages 12, 10, 7 and I try to take them on adventures as often as I can and I’ve introduced them to multi tools and knifes and teaching them to try to be as prepared for whatever whenever and I always smile when I think of the stories their going to tell their children and the things their going to do with them 😎 recently we’ve been taking weekend day trips to abandoned asylums and learning the history which is usually terrible and exploring what’s left of dead sites that once was very much alive. Love your content sorry for the rant🤓 take nothing but photos leave nothing but footprints and make memories!
@@maxlvledc the leap? Is that what the playdoh multi tool was called? Also to add in to that story I was very fortunate that just before my father passed in January he had passed down a simple Kershaw pocket knife to my eldest son and he cherishes that knife which is awesome 😎
Why did they discontinue the Juice? I have been into knives for decades, but multitools for only a few months... Trying to find the perfect one for me, but haven't found it yet. The Juice looks to be the one, but of course you can only find them used and guys are charging 3x-5x MSRP for them, which I won't pay out of principle...
I ran an assembly machine for 10 years...Carried original Leatherman PST for about two years....then 1st Leatherman Wave for 8 or nine. Used every day. But the tool I have been carrying every day for over 20 years....is a Victorinox Rambler.....Hardly a day goes by that I don't use someting on it...
My first Swiss Army knife has a mark on it when I stuck it in an electrical outlet (I know I’m very smart). Definitely a memory tool as I don’t have a use for it
I miss having a Juice S2. But It broke, was irreparable, so I sent it into leatherman and it was replaced with a rebar. The rebar is okay, but it's a shame they no longer make the Juice series. The S2 is basically the perfect EDC tool for many people. (I willfully accepted the rebar replacement though. Better to have a tool I can use than one I can't)
I've been carrying an S2 for 15(?) years. One of the springs for the pliers broke on my first one. Good to know that Leatherman won't repair it. I think i'll repar mine with a couple of pennies wedged into the slot and then smooth them to the handle.
Yeah. Leatherman have completely lost their way with their smaller multitools. I still have a CS4 and am always nervous using it now… in case it finally gives up and I have to replace it with one of their current, less sophisticated and less fully featured offerings. Why on earth did they stop the juice series. Which idiot at Leatherman is making their decisions for them?
Thank you for the great video! That's why i enjoy edc so much. Yeah, sure, being able to do some specific tasks, to fix something, to help people is amazing. But as i get older I`m starting to appreciate this possibility to carry specific tools, i mean just physical objects that have this magic ability to absorb memories, events like crazy, and thats just pure nostalgia fuel. Also i would like to say, thanks to your videos i bought style ps. And i enjoy it every day since. I had a problem, i used to break my nails all my life (anxiety thing), and it was just casual thing for me that constant pain at the finger tips. I mean i I've been carrying my victorinox, but only with style ps, and its easy access scissors i was able to quit this habit. And now i try not to leave home without style hanging on my belt loop. Thanks again, keep up the great work!
I’m also into multi tools. I didn’t see one on your table, but lately I’m carrying the Gerber Armbar. It gets bad raps. But I’m attracted to the screwdriver and blade. And the size. The scissor is fair.
My multi tool Journey Started thanks to my uncle woring on his Farm growing up in the 90's .He on my 13th birthday got me my own wave as I was carrying his old PST while at the farm All through Highschool I carried that thing on me School got mad at me one time over carrying it cause I used it to cut something at lunch . They only told me not to open the knife part in school anymore . I have my second og wave cause my first was lost in a accident .
My first multitool tool was the Carolina tool by Fiskars, I still have it and use pretty much daily in my work pouch. Now I have many more from Leatherman, Gerber and SAK. Cheers 🇨🇦
Take a look at the Leatherman Leap, marketed to kids as they're first multitool. Has an optional Knife blade. Bin carrying one since my s2 is hiding on me.
MacGuyver’s Swiss Army knife was my introduction. Mod question: For a while now I have wanted a Skeletool with large scissors place of the knife… do you know if the Surge scissor be a drop in fit?
My first actual multitool next to a similar toy to that was a cheap imperial Ireland multitool from Walmart. I hated it because the handles curved outward uncomfortably when open, but it was all I had so I used it and got the job done. For me I consider the best of all time to be the Sebertool M4 because theres just nothing else like it, no other mini offerings besides really any of the Serbertool models that are actually sturdy and robust. That's just a preference / opinion though, and my most used / carried was my old fuse.
@@maxlvledc Btw my multitool had an actual magnifying glass, and a compartment in the side which held a pretend little set of blue prints for a treehouse.
I really wish we could post pictures on here ,, my collection is really huge from Leatherman , Gerber, USA Sog’s, Bucks like you have , I have 3-4 of those , 3 KF4’s , 20 of the Juice series old and new. I’m guessing around 150 total in all. Love my multi tools 👍👍
Damn I was actually hoping this vid would talk about a multitool. Totally got me. Had to check that it was April 1st or not. But hopefully you can make another video actually showing what 1 item (we can all purchase) would be your best multitool. If it was discussed already I didn't see it, I only saw a literal toy.
Noooo such thing lol. Context is everything. If you have a situation or context I could give you a top 5..but it will be completely different for each person and situation.
@@maxlvledc Ah!! I'm the same with audio gear and someone asks for 1 headphone, 1 mic, 1 interface. :D. There's no 1 to rule them all. . Ok, let me ask a question. If based purely on aesthetics and function and non-gimmicky and small real estate (EDC), what would you choose or an effective pocket screwdriver? (For context my knife is the Rambler, pliers is Knipex, flashlight is OLIGHT, wallet is Bellroy Slimsleeve, USB drive is Samsung Bar, precision is also HOTO, headphones are Blessing 2. But looking for the 1/4 inch screws. I'm now debating between the Everyday Screwdriver 2, Bit Inline , James Cache River, discontinued Swiss Army Tool Bit Kit Wrench. For me, the Bitline seems incredibly similar to the PokitPak - which also can screw in and I actually found the Bitline too large compared to the other 2. But yip, for looks and/or small size, what would you choose? (For additional context I have no interest in bulky knives like Leathermans since imo the pliers aren't as good as the Knipex -- and I don't care about a big knife and hate the bulk --which removes most of the reason to get those knives)
@@Dracomies hmmmm, for a pocket screwdriver? I actually love the bitbar..but check out the levergear bit vault at have the cost..it's got similar versatility And switch from rambler to manager..the pen come in clutch imo😉

First knife i owned was given to me by my grandpa. He is a hunter and we just fooled aroind in the woods . He was like here you go , this is a pocket knife. This was around the time when i was 3 or 4 years old.
Hmm, great question...my instinct says Leatherman Free P4 as a stand alone, but I think the Dual Force is a good build around me tool If you can manage the grip..for a smaller one you can carry all the time the Leatherman squirt is surprisingly useful
Not at all where I saw this video going lol

An updated skeletool
Or the best of them all a revamped Juice series as this is the only thing missing in Leatherman's current line up.
Cheers.!
That old 3in1 was legendary.
You betcha mate 😜!
I wish they had had a tool like that when I was a boy. Making sand castles etc. with it like you did, would have been so great. I had to be satisfied with butter knives and forks and the like.
Awesome video!! Thank ya for showing us a part of your life!
What a great video! I was expecting an SAK just not one made by play doh. I still have my very first pocket life my father gave me with the pouch he made for it. Good stuff!!
That big red multi-tool is adorable! Thank you for sharing it.
I'm getting my Dad's military issue Gerber for my birthday this week, it will be my frist mulittool out of El cheapo busts in 2 min bracket. So even if it's not exactly what I really want I'm not getting rid of it.
My grandfather had a small shop with a locking vice, files and hand saws that I can remember when I was 4 💯
Leatherman Wave for me. I have been daily carrying it for 8 years now
In the end, isn't our mind the most important multitool?
You could say..... It was inside us all along.
Touche!
That is a terrible thought. At this point in my life that would make my most important tool, rusty, darn near rusted completely shut. 😂😂😂
Yeah matey, we all get outdated sooner rather than later..!
Just found a cool set of pliers from engineer online. The Engineer PZ-79, they appear to be purpose built lineman pliers with an extra wide plier head.
I had one of those when I was a kid, played with it all the time.
OMG! I had one of those playdoh SAKs as a kid, or at least a similar model. My brother and I both loved it and fought over it constantly. :-) Great memories.
Oh wow!
I had a chuppa chips kit pop tool when I was growing up and now I’ve got hooked on multi tools and Swiss Army knives 😂
Fuck! That sucks...I'd be pissed.
Thats it!! That was great!! Im a fan for life!!
This made me smile. Good tool, dude
Wholesome af. Thanks for sharing
Not at all! Thanks so much for the story! I wish the Leap still existed to give to your kids..that was such a great tool.
@@maxlvledc the leap? Is that what the playdoh multi tool was called? Also to add in to that story I was very fortunate that just before my father passed in January he had passed down a simple Kershaw pocket knife to my eldest son and he cherishes that knife which is awesome 😎
This is SO awesome man- God bless
That's it exactly...imo the rambler/manager is the true EDC champion. Did you know the rambler philips fits the Leatherman Rebar adapter??
@@maxlvledc If I remember...the straight screwdriver/file also fits it on an angle?
I just picked up a brand new leatherman core but i can't find any information on it do you happen to know anything about it
Yep! It's one of the most ergonomic tools ever made...it's the precursor to the st300
@@maxlvledc Thanks very much I can't wait for it to arrive and get to using it
I had that exact same one.
Managed to actually saw through a stick with the fake saw
Im struggling between buying the crunch and the surge...what are your thoughts? :)
Great Point,..My favorite is the Juice S2 in Granite Gray..When mine broke,..I had to overspend on Ebay to get a replacement
So happy it worked for you! That's one of my favorites
I’m also into multi tools. I didn’t see one on your table, but lately I’m carrying the Gerber Armbar. It gets bad raps. But I’m attracted to the screwdriver and blade. And the size. The scissor is fair.
I'm such a snob.. the lack of lock on the driver really bothered me.
Noo!😥 i feel your pain, but love the story!
That's a really cool toy. I'm going to buy them for my kids.
My first multitool tool was the Carolina tool by Fiskars, I still have it and use pretty much daily in my work pouch. Now I have many more from Leatherman, Gerber and SAK. Cheers 🇨🇦
Wow, cool video. I forgot about that Gerber multi tool. Forgot to remove it from a car I traded in, when buying a new one.
I just ordered the Play-Doh multitool set via your link for my goddaughters son. It will be a Christmas present!
Very fun video. Thank you for sharing.
Awesome story / video! Thank you for sharing! 😎👍🏻
Very cool. I had a similar toy growing up. Hopefully I can find it to give to my son
They still have them! And Victorinox makes one too!
Came here for some Leatherman bias confirmation, but I'll take nostalgia over that any day. 😊😊
Didn’t come to mind at first, but Play D’oh must be TSA friendly, too.👍
the crunch by far is the best coolest most functional
This is a FANTASTIC story and a great collection 👍
Thank you for sharing 😆
I love this video, its wholesome
Great vid ❤
That Buck tool looks like the Schrade ST1NB multitool.
My first true multitool was the Fiskars version of the Gerber Multilock.
It's a little different as it folds one handle on each side. Cool design...not practical
@@maxlvledc first multi I bought! Such a odd design I didn’t get another multitool for years.
Thanks for the advice, I will gift toy multi-tools for the children of my friends
Haha, it's a blast, and Victorinox has one too!
Take a look at the Leatherman Leap, marketed to kids as they're first multitool. Has an optional Knife blade. Bin carrying one since my s2 is hiding on me.
Ooops, I see you already did a video on it.
Been Discontinued for a while sadly
I love this video!
I’ve seen a Schrade model at an Auto Zone that looks like the exact same as that Buck multi tool.
Nice toy! I want to buy it for my son!!!!!!! 👏👏👏👏👏
Didn't see that coming 😂😂😂 Nice, I want one 😁 the search begins 🤭
They still exist! I think I linked them
MacGuyver’s Swiss Army knife was my introduction.
Mod question: For a while now I have wanted a Skeletool with large scissors place of the knife… do you know if the Surge scissor be a drop in fit?
Nope, it won't, but a Victorinox 91mm with a hole drilled out is a possibility
+1, I know a guy that took that exact 91mm Vic and made a larger hole and put it in a Wave, good luck!
So cool. Inspiring a generation. Playdo is base.
Awesome! Thanks for the story...that's been the coolest part about this video
@@maxlvledc
Btw my multitool had an actual magnifying glass, and a compartment in the side which held a pretend little set of blue prints for a treehouse.
Love the watch!
The juice though 😍. Looking at getting a crunch, will wait for the vid. Did you have fisher price tools?? Cmon. 👍.
No! Wish I did they didn't come out till I was a little older
I actually love the bitbar..but check out the levergear bit vault at have the cost..it's got similar versatility
And switch from rambler to manager..the pen come in clutch imo😉
@@maxlvledc Ooh thank you! I'll check these out! Oh my pen is the Tombow MONO drawing pen size 01 and that's always on me :P I used to use Pilot G4 and Sarasa pens and Muji. But I'm very particular of my pens haha. Thank you for the suggestion!
What kind of watch are you wearing ? I like the look of it.
Casio Dro
My favorite was the Sog pocket toolkit
Excellent, thank you!
Very cool multi-tool.
I bought my kids Leatherman Style and Leatherman Squirt. Both are well-used
Good choices! The Style ps is a great tool for basically everyone
Great video! I did a similar video on my other channel (The Singer’s Toolbox) about the most important scores and books to start building a music library. Sometimes we have to go back to the roots, you know? Also, thank you generally for your channel! It makes me want to dig in on my dual life as a tech and singer on the other channel. I’ll be restarting my life as a stage hand and audio tech, so my multitools and tool set will figure more into my life again. Looking forward to the Crunch video!
Wow that sounds awesome!
I see you're rocking a modded Worldtimer, Casio Royale. A good sign that this'll be good. 😁
Hehe, funny enough it's one of my least favorite casinos because I keep hitting the buttons accidentally. Love the design though.
So sentimental❤
First knife i owned was given to me by my grandpa. He is a hunter and we just fooled aroind in the woods . He was like here you go , this is a pocket knife. This was around the time when i was 3 or 4 years old.
omg i remember having one of those too!
Priceless
I think so, maybe I frame it!
Very pleasantly surprised w/ your fav. 😆😆
👍🏼to your mom.
Hi great video and story, which one do you recommend for a woman that fixes little stuff around the house?
Hmm, great question...my instinct says Leatherman Free P4 as a stand alone, but I think the Dual Force is a good build around me tool If you can manage the grip..for a smaller one you can carry all the time the Leatherman squirt is surprisingly useful
Victorinox has a toy plastic SAK, that I've already ordered for my son. He won't get it for a while, but it'll be waiting for him
I linked it in the description as well, wish it had existed when I was a kid
I love it!
Nice memories !
I had that one too!
I carried that in high school for years.
