I don’t have a multiplicity of multi tools. I need one that does the most. That’s why I have a Leatherman Surge, a bit kit, a Wiha 13 bit pack, a cute little 711L ratchet handle and a few other accessories. I do wish the Surge had a hammer and a precision screwdriver. I do also have one of those tiny little Swiss Army knives on my keychain for the tweezers and the toothpick.
A friend asked to see my Buck 110 one time and when I handed it to him, he used it to hammer a nail and marred the brass, then handed it back to me. He couldn’t understand why I was unhappy about that. That’s why I want a multi tool with a hammer. Maybe I’ll get a Signal at some point. Most likely I’ll just find a small hammer, maybe a silver one like Maxwell’s.

Dominic, your channel is the best on RUclips regarding EDC. It is because you don't just talk about the tools but you talk about making them better, why you carry them, how they function, and how they fit. Not many people (if any) are doing it like you do it. Keep it up.

Well I have a video suggestion for you then. I have watched a lot of multi-tool videos. I love gadgets. I have so many solutions to "probems" with the various brands. My video idea is to be the first multi-tool reviewer to fully disassemble and modify a Swiss tool or Spirit. I think upgrading the knife steel and changing the tab to a raised spidey hole is a good start. Next get rid of the rivets and replace the pivots with fasteners so the tool can be tensioned as it ages and wears. This way tools can be swapped between models or replaced if you purposely abuse your tool. This way if you cannot afford to send the tool in for service. You can fix it yourself. After that, upgrade the screw that attaches the clip. I saw the clip's screw can be a source of problems. I can't find anyone willing to modify and truly customize a Victorinox muti-tool. Not in the way people do with Leatherman, Gerber, or even with the Chinese tools you seem fond of for tinkering.

My very first leatherman was the signal in coyote tan. I carried it with me everywhere I went.
3 years later, and I’m a commercial HVAC technician, constantly climbing on rooftops and working with my hands and the surge is my best friend.
I’ve used a few Gerbers and SOG’s, but none get the job done quite like my surge.

Always interesting to see someone else's philosophy on edc. My personal carry issue is less weight and more carryability. Most multitools are just bulky and don't really fit well into a pocket. I don't know exactly why but I have EDC knives that weigh just as much and are as big/thick as these multitools but which just fit into a pocket on clip better. Something about the clip location, weight distribution, and what not but I always find that multitools tend to twist and move in my pocket too much which makes them extra uncomfortable.

Great video. I work in ambulance. My staple tool is a decade old raptor scissors that I seldom used now but it is a must in case of real real emergency. I always keychain a SD classic with pen scales but recently upgraded to a rambler (just swapped the scales). Together is a skeletool interchanged with a wave. A bring PM2 plus wave but find it redundant so it stays at home now. Rambler has a good scissors so I usually use it on minor cases as they are sharper than my raptor in cutting precisely. I use wave scissors and it was not bad but any victorinox has better scissors which includes the 58 mm ones except for the evo models which I find to be me.
    1.Raptor
    2. Rambler
    3. Skeletool
    4. Wave
Most used work and oustide work will be my rambler. I would replace it with a mini champ if I have one maybe just swap the scales as pen and scissors is number priority for me.

I'm kinda seeing Leatherman getting into the Victorinox world when it comes to creating new multi tools. Meaning that they're getting to where the tool selections are just switched around, or deleted, from model to model like SAKs. Eventually they will run out of options unless they brainstorm new tools that aren't available on any model. Albeit, I'm new to the Leatherman world, but I'm not in the world of Victorinox but I'm already seeing the similarities between the two in regard to the trap that both have fallen into. Granted, imagination is key to the user but it's also key for the longevity of both companies. I know that they can only do so much. I'm just taking the outside viewpoint as I am starting to walk through the door. What they come up with next just might involve going directly to the consumers and asking a lot of questions. Assumptions are what hurts both companies. Sales only show a small percentage when you factor in the 'settling' from consumers, not to mention the modders of products from both companies. What works for Joe Bob may not work for Billy Bob. Sometimes Billy Bob just has to make do with what is given and fill in the blanks from other companies. 'Pairing' works but the question of "Why?" in this day and age is not a moot point. I could go on but this covers most of my important points considering multi tools.

For me, I only choose multi tool with a belt cutter. That could be used in urgent scenario and it is useful to open boxes every day. So, I carry the charge tti. Anyway, all these are just toys. A tool could be heavily used should not be so expensive. There is a Chinese Roxon s801 on Amazon. I think so far that is the best. It is really well designed. The only disadvantage is the material. But it is cheap. And the material is actually strong enough.

Right now I carry a wave + and love it other than the weight. I also wish it had an integrated pocket clip.
I’m a knife fanatic so always have some sort of folding knife one me, right now it’s been the Vero frame lock Axon and always have a microtech ultratech or combat Troodon in my back pocket. I have a problem just throwing a multi tool into my pocket and let it slide around in my pocket. Especially if it lays sideways. So pocket clip is needed when it comes to a multi tool for me.

I've never seen that Victorinox before, but I can say that I really, really dislike the look of it. Why? Because Victorinox has always suffered from one, to me, fatal flaw that they share with the cheapest gas station SAK.
The flat head screwdriver tips are rounded. Victorinox rounds those, and a lot of other corners on their tools, in their pursuit of that purdy high polish. Having used too many craptastic worn, aka rounded flathead screwdrivers in my day, I just have to say "nope."
One thing I don't quite understand is why you put such a high priority on the saw. I think I've used the saw on my multi-tools maybe 3 times this century. The file gets used multiple times every week.
I will be rethinking the Signal though, it's one I don't have. Enjoyed the video, thanks for sharing with us out here.

Very sensible selections for sure. I guess as most of us would probably agree it all depends on your daily needs. I personally find a plier multitool to be just too heavy and bulky especially when I hardly need a needle nose plier unless I'm working and then I've got Knipex to handle the job. The Victorinox One Handed Trekker is my multitool and after I add my other edc on person items like my (Fenix RC05SE)flashlight,
(B3 Aviator)multipen, (Sharpie Twin Tip)marker, (Milwaukee Fastback compact)utility knife, (Galaxy Buds) wireless ear phones, smartphone, and wallet, my pocket weight and space pretty much has me relegated to cargo shorts or pants with a good belt to hold them up lol. And has me thinking about the old NutnFancy way of edc carry. But still haven't broke down and bought a fanny pack, Yet lol.

      @clintwestwood3539 Год назад +2

No idea Why, but i abused (literally) victorinox cutters for 13 years straight now and they are still in perfect shape. No nick no dent.
I do believe that they are making better cutters right now, comparable to Knipex’s one. Leatherman probably had less duration (either soft or too brittle like Gerberg) and they were forced to make them replaceable for that reason. Replaceable cutters are good if the quality is low from my experience.
Reason why forged cutters will last you a life time and will cut down everything you want. You don’t find replaceable cutters there lol.
If victorinox started making replaceable cutters, I’d take it as a downgrade in quality, something victorinox is not known for from what I know.
