I had crazy good luck with this combination as well. ruclips.net/video/JngUOFQOMlo/видео.html The funnel video is here if anyone is interested. ruclips.net/video/sc5S8gub30g/видео.html It is certainly the right tool for Reloder 26. I love this bullet / powder combo, it is extremely effective on deer. Great video as usual.
Johnny's Reloading Bench Well, I swore I'd not get back into reloading. Two recent billet lowers WIP, work in progress. One for .308 and now, 6.5 Creedmoor. Delta Tactical has great deal kits and complete upper. WE HEED THA CREED.
Imr 4350 and 120gr Hornady gsx make a very good combination in my Savage long range hunter, I can't give you the exact load number because one of my buddies would love to know my exact load details. I would also love to see you do a 22-250 series as well.
Great great job. I wonder what the RL 26 & 80 grain sp 223/5.56 Ive got 24" 1-8 twist. Probably 3000ish fps? Thanks Johnny. I wonder what state you in. Bless u brother
Primers are very, very important, and they can produce very different group size and velocities. R#26 loves a cci 250 and a Federal 215 primer in this case. I reload at the rifle range, work up my best powder charge, then change seating depths, then switch out Primers, tiny bug holes are the result. While the Small rifle primer case has a stronger case head, sometimes the Extra fire of the large rifle primer is needed. IN the case of the Creedmoor with small rifle primers, I would only opt for a CCI 450 or a Tula Small rifle magnum primer and Pray. I use a 10" drop tube on cases with a lot of powder in them, and have made longer drop tubes out of Arrow Shafts. Johnny, your video's are great.
Johnny, thanks for your videos. I've been reloading for 30 years and haven't been thru the combinations of bullets, powder and primers as you. This is a great learning tool for me. THNX I watch you, Elvis and Bacon and right now your the top of my list! Now don't get over excited (lol) The reason???, the PID controller. This device has helped my bullet casting very much and I enjoyed building it! I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas. And please keep those videos coming!!!!
I reloaded .300 Rem Ultra Mag with RE-25 (the predecessor of 26) IMR 7828 SSC, and Retumbo. 28" target barrel. using 180-200 grain SMK projectiles. It smoked back then too. I wouldn't worry too much about it. I am sure your weather didn't help, but I live in the southern desert, and it still gave off smoke.
Merry Christmas! I doubt the smoke is unburned powder because you were still getting good velocity jumps between kids that tells me it's still burning. Thanks so much for putting out these videos for the holiday. It's a great escape from the fam damily!! Lol
I went to a gunshop that sold custom Bows and made arrows. I had them take a 12" arrowshaft, flare the end, then epoxied this in the end of the powder funnel, this dramatically dropped powder level. Also, Johnny, while you have the funnel still on the case, tap the case with a pencil...get ready for a shock. Primers made a tremendous difference with R#26 depending on the case. CCI 250 and Federal 215's often get the very best accuracy and low Standard Deviation. For guys shooting a Rem 700, have the gunsmith install a Wyatts mag box that gives an additional .125 in OAL, it is a life saver. When loading up rounds with compressed loads, I will usually seat long, then seat them as I need them, loading 100 rounds at a time, bullets do seem to creap out over time. Rockwell hardness does vary over a lot# of brass, thus the grip on the bullet will vary somewhat on brass with the softer Rockwell hardness.
Made my day to wake up to a new video! That barrel definitely likes to be shot cool. Should be getting my 308 Compass on Wednesday. Will be out shooting it a couple of days later. Merry Christmas to you, JRB!
I've had great luck settling a compressed load by turning on the dry tumbler, put your finger over the case mouth and hold an edge of the case head against the lid of the tumbler. Settles the stick powders nicely.
Loading a powder that takes up the case capacity I take the funnel and offset under the powder measure. It swirls in. Then in the load block, which are wood, u take and jiggle them until they are all the same. I also at times use a long drop tube. I use redding benchrest powder measure. Works for me. The other issue you should check on very compressed load, it might rebound the bullet out some. Great video. Thanks for the evaluation of RL26.
So I tried this powder with the 129 Accubond long range. LR primers, Fed 210M, with a OAL of 2.825 in my 20 inch AR. I started and stopped at 48. as I got flat primers and ejection marks but I also got 2930fps!!! I’m dropping it to 47 and if it looks good 47.5. I only shoot 3 shot groups and it printed MOA. I’m thinking that a little slower will make for an outstanding deer/hog/coyote load!
Great video. When I have a case charge level that is up into the neck, I use my Tumblr which vibrates with the top off of it and then take the case and just set it against the rim while I’m holding it after about five seconds the level drop from mid next to mid shoulder. Give it a try.
The most interesting thing to me is sometimes you get the best groups with the worst standard deviations. Seems to go against common knowledge/thought. Love the channel and Merry Christmas!!
YES! I'm still trying to wrap my head around that. We see it A LOT. I think the standard deviation numbers from 5 shot groups are only really good when taken as a group. Like, in this video...it was obvious that AR-Comp was displaying more consistent velocity than Accurate 2520. It was clearly a trend. But I am hesitant to say that the SD number we get after 5 shots would stay the same if we shot 50 of them. I bet that crappy number on that one AR-Comp load would drop with a larger sample size.
Not the only video on RUclips that's happened on. It's a major head scratcher. Maybe playing with seating depth with the most accurate load will bring these numbers down.
Cool barrel with a mix of 50/50 Rubbing alcohol and water. Wet a wash rag, rub on the barrel till the solution is dripping off of the bottom of the barrel. You can bet your house that the magneto speed is altering groups, acting as a tuner. I like your video a lot.
Wow. You and Mopar both go you're best groups at 49.3-49.5 grains. You both shot . 75 moa and under. Pretty interesting if you ask me. Definitely looking forward to exploring that range. Great video thanks
Lol I had my first compressed loads the other night. Heard a little crunching and got freaked out. Quickly out came my Lyman manual to make sure I wasn’t going to blow my face off
On the velocity printouts are the lower numbers ES or SD? If repeatable, interesting that 49.3 gave the tightest group, yet with not the tightest ES/SD. Barrel harmonics. I believe that harmonics may not always align with best SD and this is an example of that. A good node on my 22" barrel is produced at 2857 sd 9.5, with 48.3gr. GM210, range gathered Hdy brass, FL sized of course. (When using brass fired in another rifle you should ALWAYS FL size the first time you reload it!)
I’ve shot this powder, brass, primer and bullet combination quite extensively out of a 26” bbl custom rifle. Your results are fairly consistent with my experience, insofar as where u saw the accuracy Node at about 2900 fps. In my 26” bbl, it’s running 100 fps faster at 3000-3010fps, about 25 fps per inch of bbl with sub 0.50 MOA accuracy. The chamber, particularly, the free bore was cut 0.188” with a non SAAMI Match chamber reamer, which is somewhat shorter than MINIMUM SAAMI specs. With this in mind, I found the seating depth “sweet spot,” was 0.015” ogive jump to lands. Further in my rifle the RL-26 load was 48.0 gr. I suspect the one (1.0gr) lower charge than the 49.0gr load in your 22” bbl rifle is due primarily to the press. increase caused by my load’s close proximity to lands (0.015”). In conclusion u should find accuracy nodes at both
(Cont.) ...at or very near both 2800 and 2900 fps. I further recommend u try a 0.010” to 0.015” jump to lands, and if so, lower your charge by a 1 gr. or as much as is necessary to keep velocity in close proximity to the 2800 or 2900 fps Node velocity, whichever u may choose.
Did you ever figure out if the smoke from the barrel was due to weather or unburnt powder, I will be loading for a 22" barrel and was curious whether this smoke continued to happen on other range sessions with this cartridge
I contacted Alliant asking for any loads they had for the 6.5 CM using Reloder-23. They sent me all their loads for 6.5 CM. Using a Speer 140gr Spitzer SP with a COAL of 2.760", CCI200 in Hornady brass, they list a MAX compressed load of 45.8gr and a velocity of 2799. Hope this helps! Thanks again for your videos.
Looking at your target, bullet impacts and velocity suggest the upper node is going to be in the 49.1 range which would put your lower node around 47.6.
Dig your vids man, pretty in-depth. A little curious, as I never see guys shooting the Nosler ballistic tips or Accubonds. These are really accurate bullets, that perform well on game, and are reasonably priced. I shoot them in my .260, and 6.5x 284 with awesome results. Anyway, keep the good vids comin!
135 grain bullets are too light for RL26. I recommend using 147 or 150 grain projectiles. RL26 also burns much hotter and you should allow more time for the barrel to cool. One of the forums stated the flame is twice as hot as RL17. The smoke was from using bullets which were too light.
David Peterson the smoke was due to atmospheric conditions. Not the lighter Bullets. RL26 is great for all Bullets in 6.5CM and most other overbore cartridges.
Good day. I just bought myself the Howa 1500 6.5 creedmoor with a 26" varmint barrel. I am very interested in the results you got from the Reloder 26 powder, unfortunately I can't seem to find it in South Africa. I tried to look at alternatives and found a chart on ADI World Class that shows the Hodgdon Retumbo is similar to the Reloder 25. Is it possible that you can either do a video on that or give me a bit of advice on what other powders I can try to get hold of?
What benefit are you getting by going with small primer? is the brass stronger/better if you go small primer pockets and would you prefer the small magnum primers youre using over a standard large primer cci 200 or cci br2 large?
Johnny I've got one metric butt ton of reloader 22. I haven't seen any data for the creed and RL22 but I see some for the .260 Rem. can I use this powder for the creed? In you words will I "blow my face off" if I try it?
If you send a message to the bullet company usually they have data for more powders but only print the best grouping and most efficient powders in there manuals. It should be a good place to start for data. Also you could see if anyone you know has a program like quick load or there are others that predict the performance of different powders in different cases. several writers use these programs to do the same thing you are trying to do.
So I have a tc compass in 6.5 creed and I want to get into reloading for it. Why did you opt for the small primer vs large primer brass? Also can you try berger vld bullets? I've been very interested in those
Looks like it's slower than H4831 (a powder I've always wanted to play with in a 26 inch creedmoor) - Also, I've really had good luck with Superformance powder.
Great Video, do you think this powder would work well with Nosler Custom Competition 140gr. Bullet. And if so where would you start your Powder Charge at?
I want to try that powder in 300 win so bad it's not funny but right now I can't get enough o an order to cover the hazmat for shipping for just one or two pounds. But I really like 23 and just can not wait to try 26 have had very good luck with 22 and 25 both bit that stuff just seems like a screaming powder
"Using your favorite sex toy to vibrate the powder down"..... followed by: "I've never tried it but I've seen other people do it, and it works" LMAO!!! Keep up the great vids, you're awesome!
Just a thought... With most of my rifles, they absolutely HATE the Magnetospeed bayonet being on there. I've seen many many many times that the rifles will shoot much much tighter groups without the MS. I generally will only use it to get my Avg Speeds, SD, and ES, then go back and shoot another group without the bayonet to see what the real group will actually be. Just my opinion, but I would suggest going back out and shooting without the MS now that you know average velocities. (Im deep into ballistics, and barrel harmonics is probably my #1 per peeve)
Slammed305 with the can on the end and the thin barrel having the magnetospeed on the end as well will Definitely give false data. Now that he has his velocities for charge weight he needs to repeat the test again without the magnetospeed to look for any changes then go from there. With that pencil barrel I would shoot no more then 3 shots before a 5 minute cool down at least.
I have to ask, would you feel comfortable using this powder with other bullets? The 129 Accubond LR or the 120 Barnes TTSX? And what about using LR primer brass?
Gene Itzkowitz I know, but for how MANY loadings?? The small primer pockets have proven to be stronger in higher pressure loads to help withstand pocket and head expansion. That's WHY Lapua did them from the beginning and Starline followed due to people asking for that. It's all to do with having extra material to beef up the casehead. The ballistics between the two sizes will be negligible at most, but longevity of brass is better with the small primer pockets.
I completely agree with you! However in my case running an AR, case life will be shorter due to the need to full length size after every firing. My concern is safety. I'm not sure the primer size will make much difference.
gsitzkowitz you don't need to full length resize just because it's a semi :) you can adjust your resizing die to just allow cases to chamber then bump shoulder another .001-.002" and be good for your gun. That's what I do in my AR Creeds and my AR Grendels. Have not had a failure to feed or chamber yet in them
Today, using 49 grains of RL26 behind a 143 ELDx I got 2892 FPS, and sub MOA accuracy. 3 FPS ES and 1.6 SD. I imagine this was a fluke and more testing is required. Tikka T3x lite stainless, hornady brass, CCI250, and a LabRadar
I was using a 143 ELDx, out of a Tikka T3x lite stainless with a 24.3" barrel. I shot this load over a Labradar. verified it 2 or 3 times. blew my mind..... another tenth i would be at 2900 with a 143 in a 6.5CM.... go figure@@kencleg7721
I would try 49g is what I would try 48.3 is thousand scatter node shuts seating depth don’t worry to much about your es your just looking for cosistency
I have an interesting challenge for you. measure your powder weights for a mk 262 clone load but make the measured loads + or - .05 grain and see if you can tell the difference. Then load up 20 more + or-.05 and mix them up and shoot two more ten round groups. See if it makes a difference you can tell. My feeling is too many people shooting at 1 and 2 hundred yards are obsessing over what you cannot see.
I had crazy good luck with this combination as well. ruclips.net/video/JngUOFQOMlo/видео.html The funnel video is here if anyone is interested. ruclips.net/video/sc5S8gub30g/видео.html It is certainly the right tool for Reloder 26. Really cool to see that your best group was 49.5 and mine was 49.3. Maybe that's the sweet spot. I'm looking forward to more testing with this combo.
Johnny's Reloading Bench
Well, I swore I'd not get back into reloading. Two recent billet lowers WIP, work in progress.
One for .308 and now, 6.5 Creedmoor. Delta Tactical has great deal kits and complete upper.
WE HEED THA CREED.
Do you think this load would be good for long range shooting. 1000 yd to mile?
Imr 4350 and 120gr Hornady gsx make a very good combination in my Savage long range hunter, I can't give you the exact load number because one of my buddies would love to know my exact load details. I would also love to see you do a 22-250 series as well.

That group at 19:40 😂. I’m really wondering if that barrel is getting a little too warm. My weatherby seems to do the same thing.
Merry Christmas Johnny. Enjoy your family time, we will be here when you get back.
Primers are very, very important, and they can produce very different group size and velocities. R#26 loves a cci 250 and a Federal 215 primer in this case. Johnny, your video's are great.
Merry Christmas Johnny!
Don't push yourself if time gets short. Family is more important than a bunch of RUclips strangers!
Ah, a video from Johnny. Don’t worry if you can’t get your next video done for Xmas. Just have a Merry Christmas and don’t blow your face off!
After a barrel cool off, that 49.3 was tight.
That thin barrel heats up quickly and groups open up or string.
Johnny, thanks for your videos. I've been reloading for 30 years and haven't been thru the combinations of bullets, powder and primers as you. This is a great learning tool for me. THNX
I watch you, Elvis and Bacon and right now your the top of my list! Now don't get over excited (lol) The reason???, the PID controller. This device has helped my bullet casting very much and I enjoyed building it!
I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas. And please keep those videos coming!!!!
Merry Christmas Johnny thank you for all you do!
Ordered my Thompson center compass yesterday in 6.5 Creedmoor
Same here
These bullets have peaked my interest and those velocities for where I shoot would make a difference. I will be on the lookout for some!
Just ordered my first 6.5 cm rifle. Great video. Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas I'm so glad your making videos my family is already driving me nuts lol
Made my day to wake up to a new video!
That barrel definitely likes to be shot cool. Should be getting my 308 Compass on Wednesday. Will be out shooting it a couple of days later.
Merry Christmas to you, JRB!
Spend your family time brother we will all be here waiting on Tues for your 223 video Merry Christmas from the foley family
I've had great luck settling a compressed load by turning on the dry tumbler, put your finger over the case mouth and hold an edge of the case head against the lid of the tumbler. Settles the stick powders nicely.
Merry Christmas Johnny! God bless you brother!
Loading a powder that takes up the case capacity I take the funnel and offset under the powder measure. It swirls in. The other issue you should check on very compressed load, it might rebound the bullet out some.
Great video. Thanks for the evaluation of RL26.
How about a video on the hornady 135 A tip with RL 26 in 6.5 creedmoor !!!!!!!
Joe Dirt yessss do it please
So I tried this powder with the 129 Accubond long range. LR primers, Fed 210M, with a OAL of 2.825 in my 20 inch AR. It would be interesting to see what you discover o.2 around that great printed one.
Should I use FGMM, CCI 200 or CCI 250 primers with RL 26 in 6.5cm and 143 eldx ???? 🤔🤔🤔
Great video! Merry Christmas everyone!
Sharps rifle says they use a drop tube for some of their super compressed loads.
With as cold as it is, 26 may need mag. primers....
Imo, the superior grouping using 49.3 came AFTER your barrel cool down.
Before you give up on 49.8, try cold barrel group.
Merry Christmas brother. Thanks for the interesting videos and bang on information
Lol I had my first compressed loads the other night. Heard a little crunching and got freaked out. Quickly out came my Lyman manual to make sure I wasn’t going to blow my face off
Are you going to do a video on the 156 elite hunters for 6.5 Creedmoor With H4350?
Could the cheap stock represent some of the inconsistent accuracy?
ok I know it's 4 yrs old but can you use that recipe in a AR-10 with a 22inch heavy barrel??
On the velocity printouts are the lower numbers ES or SD? If repeatable, interesting that 49.3 gave the tightest group, yet with not the tightest ES/SD. Barrel harmonics. I believe that harmonics may not always align with best SD and this is an example of that. A good node on my 22" barrel is produced at 2857 sd 9.5, with 48.3gr. GM210, range gathered Hdy brass, FL sized of course. (When using brass fired in another rifle you should ALWAYS FL size the first time you reload it!)
I reached 2929 fps out of a 24 inch barrel with a 140 grn bullet. I was using HBN coated Bullets which slow it down a bit.
I hope you have a couple videos for this Xmas. 2019
I’ve shot this powder, brass, primer and bullet combination quite extensively out of a 26” bbl custom rifle. Your results are fairly consistent with my experience, insofar as where u saw the accuracy Node at about 2900 fps. ...at or very near both 2800 and 2900 fps. I further recommend u try a 0.010” to 0.015” jump to lands, and if so, lower your charge by a 1 gr. or as much as is necessary to keep velocity in close proximity to the 2800 or 2900 fps Node velocity, whichever u may choose.
I did the same here with a 26 inch barrel with a 1 in 8 twist and 49.8 grains and it shot 3/8 at 100 yards
Got me a 6.5 compass today. See how it goes.
would love to see a tea of the 130gr vld in 6.5 Creedmoor as well as the 6.5 grendal!!!!!
I wonder how RL26 will work in a 16 1/2" barrel?
You can actually buy tools to make that ring on the bullet. It should increase stability???
Also have you done a 153 Amax 6.5 Creedmoor testing with h4350?
Did you ever figure out if the smoke from the barrel was due to weather or unburnt powder, I will be loading for a 22" barrel and was curious whether this smoke continued to happen on other range sessions with this cartridge
Like to see you test IMR 4451, I get better velocities and groups. Still testing OAL but I am seeing 1/4-1/2 moa at 200 yards using 2.800" oal.
Who among us doesn't have a suction cup vibrator on there reloading bench ????? 🤔🤔🤔🤔. I tried it, didn't do shit for me 48 gr of rl26 ...
You should explore 48.8 and change the seating depth.
I knew 23 would work less powder than 22 and same velocity my Swede likes 23
I blew a primer with 48 grains RL 26. 143 eldx ....😩😩😩
The 49.3 were shot after the prolonged cool off. Would that account for the tight grouping?
Looking at your target, bullet impacts and velocity suggest the upper node is going to be in the 49.1 range which would put your lower node around 47.6.
Wow! What a great channel. I’m a new subscriber.
All I can find is that it's between RL22 and RL33.
Dig your vids man, pretty in-depth. A little curious, as I never see guys shooting the Nosler ballistic tips or Accubonds. David Peterson the smoke was due to atmospheric conditions. Not the lighter Bullets. RL26 is great for all Bullets in 6.5CM and most other overbore cartridges.
I'd be interested to try some slower burners in my 243??
This stuff works in my 6.5x06 I’d say 50 grains tops u can’t go wrong it lowers the pressures
Merry Christmas to you sir great. Shooting
Do you use a special die for the Berger Bullet so it doesn’t get the ring?
Good luck on tomorrows vid!
Will you be making a vid showing groups out to 200 yards?
What benefit are you getting by going with small primer? is the brass stronger/better if you go small primer pockets and would you prefer the small magnum primers youre using over a standard large primer cci 200 or cci br2 large?
Do you have any plans to try Reloader 22 to see if there is a happy medium between RL 17 and RL 26?
Johnny I've got one metric butt ton of reloader 22. I haven't seen any data for the creed and RL22 but I see some for the .260 Rem. can I use this powder for the creed? In you words will I "blow my face off" if I try it?
If you send a message to the bullet company usually they have data for more powders but only print the best grouping and most efficient powders in there manuals. It should be a good place to start for data. Also you could see if anyone you know has a program like quick load or there are others that predict the performance of different powders in different cases. several writers use these programs to do the same thing you are trying to do.
YOU ARE THE MAN!
If you took your suppressor off and put a muzzle brake on it you might group better or get more fps
Try a drop tube(s) with your powder funnel?
"I should use tooth brushes and sex toys to get the powder to settle" I just spit coke out my nose and all over the damn when you said that one!!!
So I have a tc compass in 6.5 creed and I want to get into reloading for it. Why did you opt for the small primer vs large primer brass? Also can you try berger vld bullets? I've been very interested in those
Why are you not using your Lyman Gen6 Powder Measure?
since you are using magnum rifle powders, have you thought about superformance powder?
I like your show!
Looks like it's slower than H4831 (a powder I've always wanted to play with in a 26 inch creedmoor) - Also, I've really had good luck with Superformance powder.
Is Reloder 26 on a burn chart that anyone can find?
nope lol. best guess is between rl22 and 50, so slow burning
Your node should be in between charge 2-4
How are those velocities gonna effect the life of your barrel?
Do you think the humidity might have effected your grouping?
Do you anneal your cases ever?
Get you some of them 125 grain NP !!!!
Hey really enjoy your videos ! Please try imr 4451 I have used this powder for my 6.5 and have had really good luck with it . Thanks
That magnetospeed hung off your barrel affects accuracy. Try shooting for accuracy without it.
I've been thinking about loading 147gr. ELD-M using 4831SC in my Creedmoor. Have you tried that powder with 147gr. ELD-M? Merry Christmas BTW!
How long does a T/C allow to seat?
Big Gee 2.900 inches
jake4x41982 Thank You
what program are you using to measure MOA on your shot targets? Thanks for the great videos
I have to ask, would you feel comfortable using this powder with other bullets? The 129 Accubond LR or the 120 Barnes TTSX? And what about using LR primer brass?
gsitzkowitz large primer brass won't be as strong in the case head, that's why they've made small primer brass.
jimhans1 ? Moparnadman ran the same test with LR brass and exceeded the max using Fed 210m.
Have not had a failure to feed or chamber yet in them
You could go to a slightly faster powder like RL17 and see if you can match those velocities.
I don't think it would work without dangerously higher pressures 🤔
Today, using 49 grains of RL26 behind a 143 ELDx I got 2892 FPS, and sub MOA accuracy. 3 FPS ES and 1.6 SD. I imagine this was a fluke and more testing is required. Tikka T3x lite stainless, hornady brass, CCI250, and a LabRadar
Swap to fed 210 gmm
And bump to 50
Not the 143 Sierra pro hunter 140
I was using a 143 ELDx, out of a Tikka T3x lite stainless with a 24.3" barrel. I shot this load over a Labradar. verified it 2 or 3 times. blew my mind..... another tenth i would be at 2900 with a 143 in a 6.5CM.... go figure@@kencleg7721
Wish I would have seen this video first...I started at 46.6 and went in .3gr increments...wasted 135s, which are scarce these days.
Great video. I would love to see you test some of the lead free 6.5mm offerings out there like the 127gn Barnes LRX or 122gn Lehigh Controlled Chaos.
I would try 49g is what I would try 48.3 is thousand scatter node shuts seating depth don’t worry to much about your es your just looking for cosistency
Sorry i ment 48.8 is the scatter node and 1.5% above that is your ocw which is 49g
