I love that he takes himself unseriously as he takes his music seriously. It's an awesome combination. I've even seen him hold his guitar out to let children in the front row strum some notes and push the effects buttons.

especially among guitar players.. When I was younger the EGO was so thick some people wore it like a cloak and you could actually watch it flap in the wind as a breeze came along. I ignore it today though.

A fine tribute to Eddie. When I was in the military back in the late 70's a black friend of mine played Maggot Brain for me when he found out I was a HUGE Jimi Hendrix fan. To say the least I was absolutely blown away. I was stationed at March AFB in California at the time and immediately began searching for my own copy of that Funkadelic album in dusty old record stores in San Bernadino. I was eventually able to find it, and still have it. Back at the barracks the commanders and first sergeants office was down the hall in my barracks on the same floor. One day I had Maggot Brain literally blasting as loud as hell and noticed that the mirror on my door was shaking from someone banging on it. I had it so loud I couldn't hear the banging. So, I turned it down and quickly opened the door. To my horror the first sergeant was standing there. I thought I was in big trouble and then he told me that he heard it down the hall and just wanted to know who that was. I explained to him that it was an older album by the Funkadelics and that it wasn't in print anymore. He wanted it for his son. HOW COOL IS THAT. To top it off, years later I posted that story on an Eddie Hazel web site and got an email from Eddie's widow asking if she could use that story. Of course I said YES. Eddie and Maggot Brain will live forever. One of the greatest guitar solo's of all time.

The story behind this incredible performance can be found in Wikipedia. "Maggot Brain" was recorded in one take when George Clinton, under the influence of LSD, told guitarist Hazel during the recording session to play as if he had been told his mother was dead. Clinton explained "I told him to play like his mother had died, to picture that day, what he would feel, how he would make sense of his life, how he would take a measure of everything that was inside him. Though several other musicians performed on the track, Clinton largely faded them out of the final mix so that the focus would be on Hazel's guitar.
Buckethead is awesome but that song totally belongs to Eddie.

I think buckethead has some sort of fan in his bucket so he can stay cool while on stage during the summer. Perhaps a cool suit or something. He is absolutely stunning to see live if you ever have the chance to see him just go! It's worth it.

Never heard Maggot Brain, but this is AWESOME. Huge fan of prog rock bands like Genesis and Pink Floyd. This song feels like a trip. No need for vocals! Just great music!

This rips! Back when Bonnaroo was at its best.
I was at the show but I have to admit I didn’t know Maggot Brain at the time. I was a P-funk fan but mostly knew their more popular funk tunes. I heard someone else play the song live so I bought the Maggot Brain CD a while ago and was blown away by the song and the fact that I didn’t know more about it. It’s stunning and this is a great cover.
