    Much can be said about this remake, but I love the elaborate redesign of the fire marble puzzle. In my opinion, THIS is what doind a remake of something should be used for: elaborating (graphically and functionally) on something that wasn't possible in the original.

    3:45 yeah I think both doors to Gehn's lab are locked in the original game, forcing you to go through the fan vent in order to unlock the path from Jungle Island to Survey Island via Boiler Island.
    Another thing that has changed from the original Riven with the firemarble puzzle is that you no longer had to guess which symbol and color were Prison Island's. Since you can visit as soon as you open Temple Island's dome, you also get the symbol pretty much immediately. In the original there was ambiguity as to what Prison Island's color was, since you didn't know the symbol, and until you accessed the waffle iron, you didn't know what the sixth color was (since one of the wahrk lights was burned out). You can easily just trial and error it, since you have unlimited tries for the firemarble puzzle, but I think there was also a way of figuring it out logically, but I can't remember what the process was right now :p

    So in the remake it's easier to finish the marble than the animal puzzle. Or at least to get to it quicker as long as you don't guess part of the animal one.
    I had the feeling that in the original it was the other way around.

    12:38 Check out 42:49 of "Let's Play The Riven Demo with Cyan's Harrison Pink and Claire Hummel." I interpret those comments to imply that not only was it the intention that the intermediate symbols on the domes represent intermediate colors, but for any color of the rainbow, you could write a symbol corresponding to it.
    49:30 Is it possible to go back up and manually reset the puzzle to the state you found it in, causing the book to lose power? It didn't occur to me that a single set of fire marbles could be exploded more than once. Either way, I guess Gehn wants you to find him *only if* you are smart enough to solve the puzzle yourself.

    Say... weren't you supposed to get your trapped linking book back first? With out it you lack a 'bargaining piece' to use with Gehn.
    Beyond that... has Gehn made a single standard elevator in any of the islands at all? They all seem to be their unique implementations. Actually now that I think about it, every technological device of his seems to use some what different controls, looks, etc... I'm getting the feeling Gehn isn't much one for standardization. At least he didn't use different solutions with in the same systems though, like all the transporters are the same, if even those had been different his non-standard approach would be even more extreme.

    If the intermediate cat's eyes are intermediate colors, then the one for orange shouldn't be a "main" color, logically. It's not a very obvious color to strictly differentiate from everything else and usually comes late in the history of naming colors in a language. Unless the D'ni color vision is not human

  • @HalaBasinah
    @HalaBasinah 2 месяца назад +2

    Yeah, official sources mentioned (in either the demo LP or the State of Cyan video, I forgot) that Richard Vander Wende designed the symbols to blend into each other so they could express a color gradient.
    I'm also glad they changed the waffle iron from 25x25 to 5x5. The larger grid didn't make the original puzzle more challenging, it just made it more fussy. Once you understood the principle, figuring out the exact placement of each marble really just amounted to pixel hunting.
    I only wish they'd retained the requirement that you figure out how the placement of the marbles corresponds to the location of the spinning domes. But I am pretty sure that was the original plan; like you, I feel like they intended for Survey Island to turn out differently than it ended up.

    A thing I wonder with Linking Books, is why it has to be a book in the first place? I mean with a Description Book I can understand: you need to be able to write in it, hence a book. But all a Linking Book contains is a panel on the first page... so why contain it in a book of all things? Wouldn't any flat surface theoretically suffice? Is there a piece of Myst lore stating that books are especially good "linking vessels"?
    I believe it was mentioned somewhere how the link between a Description Book and Linking Book is even made, which may hold the key to my question, but I don't remember what it was.

    • @meddlerfilms2585

      Yeah, It's definitely one of those mechanics that you weren't supposed to think too hard about and besides, in 1993 there were a lot weirder premises to take at face value(Like everything in Cosmic Osmo for example).
      That's what makes the reimagining of the Golden Dome so nice, It shows that Cyan was thoughtful enough address people's questions with something other than "it's just a game, bro"

    • @ScooterBond1970
      @ScooterBond1970 2 месяца назад +1

      If you've played/seen Uru, you'll see that some linking books can have multiple linking panels, on separate pages, linking to different areas of the same age. So that's one advantage of using a book as opposed to a single sheet.

    45:00 As the sliders can't pass each other, the order of the symbols with the offsets in Ghen's journal and the order of the coloured sliders must be the same. So the information obtained in the chair on map island isn't really needed.

  • @Jellepepe

    I feel like this (the fire marble puzzle) is by far the weakest point of the remake.
    The grid solution being used immediately on the elevator is weird (why even move it from its original location?). Combined with the colour coded sliders means survey island is pratically useless from both a narrative (survey what? pratically just a whark tank now) and gameplay standpoint other than giving you a solution basically for free.
    I think removing the colour coding from the sliders, removing the 'lock' from the elevator on survey island, and perhaps making the survey puzzle/mechanics a bit more complicated (something that perhaps involves the dome locations again?) Would make this much better again.
    I agree that the 5x5 grid vs 25x25 is a decent change, and I love the new marble/dome stuff otherwise, but survey island needed a bit more love.

    • @roberthickman4092
      @roberthickman4092 2 месяца назад

      I aggree with this, and the changes you note also make it feel much more 'gamey' and less like a believable real place. Though survey island wasn't that functional in the original either, the only reason to go there is an 'information lock'.

    • @Jellepepe
      @Jellepepe 2 месяца назад

      @@roberthickman4092 thats true, but most of rivens original puzzles were information based, that was what made it so good.
