You are the best. I've been following all your Cyan Lets Plays for many years. Don't care for the battle games. I was a backer of Obduction and got this 2015 iMac to play it. Still have and use it. It's not good enough to play New Riven. Thanks for taking your time and walking us thru it so we don't miss anything. Thank you I'm 74 Mac all the way
Of all the areas that got extensively changed, I think the changes to Jungle Island are my favorite. The whole island feels much more like a place where people live, rather than a village that's been built around puzzles.
After the live actors, probably the thing I miss most from the original is that jolt in the maglev ride from Temple Island to Jungle Island, when you go over the rock. I get why they removed it, but it makes me sad. It was so fun!
I know, right? I swear I could feel that little jolt in the pit of my stomach when playing the original as a kid, I would've loved to see it remastered and in VR.
The sunners were my favorite part of the original Riven. I think i had a save right before you see them so I could watch them over and over again. So happy to see them again!
They stick around a lot longer in the remake, if you just keep moving slowly enough. I managed to explore the entire beach area while they napped the afternoon away.
That's one thing I never understood in the original, why place the classroom on a cliff that can only be accessed via underwater train that seems like can only hold one person at a time? At least here it is more accessible.
No little one running away. It was the cutest thing in the old game. I already finished the game with the worst possible ending though. 😅 Going to start again today and take my time.
I've always wondered if the Stranger learned a bit of D'ni between Myst and Riven. Maybe Atrus mentioned an D'ni to English book tucked away in the fireplace of Myst's library. Even just learning D'ni numbers would give the Stranger a huge advantage here.
Wait, you were at Mysterium last year? No way, I was there too! Hope you had fun. I got to very briefly talk with Rand Miller about the Myst series being a bit of a metaphor for game development, which was probably the highlight of my year.
I saw the painting and was able to deduce the symbol by process of elimination despite not finding the actual totem. I went back after completing the game and found the totem, it was amazing!
In 1997, with the original Riven, the devs dug some permanent holes in the water, literally blowing my mind. And now, in the remake, they closed them. I’m stunned, awestruck, discombobulated! ;)
22:20 When I first saw this on my playthrough I immediately burst out laughing at the thought of Gehn giving angry Hitler speeches to the people of Riven every morning.
I've been out of touch with the Myst fandom for a while, and I'm more surprised than I should be that Rium+ has once again surpassed Atrus in ingenuity
Did Rand or Robyn ever do a riven walk through with commentary like Sven? If not, Sven, you are the closest thing to an official cyan let’s play! Love your videos man…they bring so much joy. Thank you. I know Rand did one for myst: ruclips.net/user/livecS7eXVn00sg?si=6Lm_VPDb-R9W8sqA
On the Cyan channel, one of them has done a Dev talk, but only as a back drop to a qna session. They did a mini tour of the start, and climbed up channel wood, but no story
So on the 'link' vs 'create' side I am on both. I think some Ages are natural, crafted by the Maker in the setting, and others are Written into existence by those with the Art. But just cause an Age was made via the Art doesn't make its people any less real and such, and thus they should be treated with respect. Thus one should treat them like Atrus does. Also, I LOVE how deep the lore is and how fandom has had so many years to discuss and think about things. Its such a great universe, one I hope we get more, new stuff in. Hopefully things like 1-4 rather than like End of Ages which was honestly meh to me. (Uru was cool because its fun to walk the Cavern.) Great series so far! Fun stuff.
I absolutely love how they kept the original maglev sounds but I prefer the ride from the original game. I miss the shakiness of the wires and how it catches air while going through the tall guard ring.
The frame-blending artifact is completely fixed (gone), thanks! How did you do it? One of the few things I remember clearly from playing Riven in 1998 is something that can be heard in this village (or one just like it, if there's another) when you walk up to one of the huts. I won't be any more specific for now (to avoid giving spoilers to people reading the comments who haven't played the game) but I wonder if it's the same in this remake.
I was on my way to write a comment on the first video of this Let's play. But I obesly got destricted. Yes I was so happy when you said that there was something missing from the original. Because you're the only one out of all the 20-something content creators who touched that they removed the number balls. Which disappointed me more than replacing the FMVs with 3D models. And while I understand that you want to finish your walkthrough while the game is still fairly new on Steam. So can you take as mutch time that you need for me.
I feel like the water near the beginning WOULD be safe-ish to drink. It's drizzling down through a bunch of limestone deposits and stalagtites. It's flowing and clear. The real question is how much gravel and limestone has it filtered through before falling down?
Has someone done fanart on what The Stranger might actually look like? Personally, in the case of Riven, I like to imagine some sort of jungle explorer.
Well... I guess I spent to much time pondering the number system in the end, so I suppose my comment will be on that. As such, based on that 1 = 1 and 5 = -- symbol wise, as well as that ) = 2 and the arch on the bottom is 10. I'm guessing the number system is a 5 digit system. No 0 symbol is given and may or may not exist, but ignoring that detail you can cover 0 to 4 with the symbols given. And if you rotate them you get the same number times 5. So thus why 1 -> 5 and 2 -> 10 I guess. In their number system those might just be 10 and 20 really, and so you're counting. 1-2-3-4 - 10-11-12-13-14 - 20-21-22-23-24 - 30 etc And so obviously in our number system they translate to smaller numbers for the most part. Considering that at least for the numbers shown they basically mix the symbols together, I guess when you see them put together it's basically additive as well and not multiplicative. For numbers higher then these I'm currently not sure how they'd handle it. So based on that reasoning the symbols that looks like numbers on the second piece of paper would be... 32 and 40. Which I guess could be a grade, 32 points out of 40. Or with in our number system 17 out of 20. The only other option that comes to mind to me as an option is that it represents a larger number, but I'm not quite sure how to read it then.... I guess if enough larger numbers come by elsewhere in Riven I might be able to figure out how they exactly write those out.
I also never got a 10 during my play through, and I've tried it many times. Also I watched lots of twitch streams, seemingly no one rolls a 10 there. Maybe Cyan has a off-by-one-error there?
The lip movements of the 3D animation does not match up with the original audio. I hope they make a path that cleans up, enhances, and enables the use of the original animated video.
On the debate of creating worlds vs linking to existing ones I don't see hard prood for either side and as a writer myself I don't see the point in writing anything if it ain't something I myself create. On the other hand, if you write something, and exactly what you wrote springs to life in the form of a (new) world, does it really matter if it was already there or if you created it? I mean when you link to that world you can still ultimately pat yourself on the back and say "f**k me I've good a good imagination", because whether that world already existed or not, YOU had the imagination to write and link to it.
If i recall - and I'm not sure where I heard it, probably one of the novels - the D'ni had fairly compelling evidence that they didn't create worlds only linked to them but it was still a subject of debate among their scholars. That said, you make a fair point. The distinction between finding and creating worlds is largely irrelevant. You still need to envision the world then put in the work to write the descriptive book.
now this is what i was really looking forword to. the rides particularly the underwater train and the minecart. are daily uploads not going to be done anymore?
Here comes _another_ suspension-of-disbelief-straining number system... D'ni numbers at least follow a natural internal logic and allow cursivation (which seems to have become their script). And can be easily written if you have any way to put lines on a surface
I don't fully understand the system, but at least the method seems reminiscent of cuneiform. And anyway, lots of number and writing systems throughout history were somewhat improvised; the D'ni number system was likely standardized thousands of years ago.
@@micahbush5397 I was kinda referring to the oddly specialized stick with the sector shape and the circle. What do you do if you only know this number system and you need to write a number (let's use a super dramatic example) with your finger and someone's blood? Not very versatile, if you ask me
