Say hello to Storm Eunice, the storm of the century! Portreath, Cornwall

- Storm Eunice arrived early this morning, February 18th 2022, here in Cornwall. The headlines in the newspapers described it as the ‘Storm of the Century!’ with Cornwall sitting directly in it’s path in the red warning zone.
We visited Portreath on the North Cornish coast to see how it compared to previous Winter storms which regularly batter this stretch of coast. Eunice lacked the driving rain but certainly packed a punch with some incredibly strong winds which whipped up the sea.
Here’s our video from a storm battered Portreath, it’s called ‘Say hello to Storm Eunice, the storm of the century!’

Didn't the monkey hut get destroyed in 2014?
@@English-Lassthe hut on the end of the pier was destroyed in 2014 but has been rebuilt. The hut he was standing by in this video was Dead man's hut'. Managed because it used to be used to store bodies before they were picked up.
A buddy of mine got stationed in Cornwall after a tour of duty in Vietnam. He said it was the best place he had ever been in his life and always talked about it when he got a few mud slides in him.😎

Thanks for posting we always used to stay in portreath when we were kids! If I remember quite a few people have died in bad weather there! Looked bad!
As locals we have a good idea of where will be safe. Porthleven Pier and Mullion have seen fatalities over the years, unfortunately. We stay well back! Sarah :)

Hello! I've just come across this video and your channel after reminiscing with one of my work friends how bad Storm Eunice was where we live!
You got some incredible footage that shows just how powerful this storm was (nearly a year ago now omg!)
I had an, experience shall we say, after going out in what must have been 80-90mph winds, probably more!!
I'm a bit of a lightweight but never have I ever been physically thrown by a gust of wind! Absolutely unbelievable.
No beaches where I live but some incredible hills that overlook a valley for miles around.
Venturing up there in winds like this, I must have been mental. They literally BLEW ME AWAY.
I couldn't walk and was being knocked over with nearly every step I took. Was genuinely a little scary haha
Luckily I had the help of my work friend after managing to drag her out with me, so I had some help staying on my feet because I genuinely needed it!!
So glad she was with me or I would have ended up on the news having flown to some far-off county.
Glad you guys got to experience it too, and let me relive a crazy memory I had honestly forgotten about!
Keep up the videos, and keep storm chasing!! Get those winds (and you two fighting them) on camera :)

Thanks for posting, can't believe how wild it is down there. We visited Portreath from Glasgow on January 2nd and done a section of the south west coast path, it was a beautiful day. Take care. 🇬🇧

Oh my goodness I was so worried you were both going to get blown away. That was certainly a different side of Cornwall that I haven’t seen before. I suppose your doggie was sitting at home in front of the fire. Thankyou for braving the weather to bring us another video,
We have rough weather frequently in winter, with a lot of string winds. And yes, our little brown dog was safely snoozing at home, Sarah :)
I was at Trevose Head , incredible winds and sea .

@@CornishWalkingTrails thanks Sarah, I tried walking to the top of the headland but impossible, managed to get as far as Constantine Bay . Incredible sea.
So exhilarating! Thanks for braving the winds. That poor seagull! Here at La Jolla, a curved protective seawall (built in 1930 to create a safe place for children to swim) juts out into the Pacific Ocean, similar to the quay (key?) there in Portreath. I love walking out to the end during a storm (there is new railing), waves splashing my feet. Kindred spirits, you two. :)
The quay in Portreath is shut to pedestrians now, although I remember walking along it as a child! Sarah :)
We all can say , we've seen worse , don't panic Captain Mannering !!, I remember 2005 at the castle at Perranporth , up on the cliff, the waves were huge, and October last year at Chapel Porth the sea was evil.
I love the Norman Collier bit at the end 😁, .
I do wonder what the people in charge will come up with next to panic about ha.

You're mad, I tell thee, mad! You must be to go out in that weather. It was bad enough over here near St Austell but I hear the north coast was much worse. Still some high winds to come apparently but not as bad as today's. I won't be venturing out until it's calmed right down. Stay safe x
I hope you survived in St Austell! We count ourselves lucky that we had no damage. My 70 something Dad was fixing his shed roof on a ladder - must be where I get it from!! Sarah :)
@@CornishWalkingTrails I'm up near Roche Rock and the wind was howling horribly around here but we seem to have survived unscathed, thanks. The large storage box I use to store my recycling bags and boxes took a wander around the front garden and the neighbour's larger one was blown over but everything else seems ok here.
Good heavens! Your Dad's a brave man. I'm in my 60's and haven't left the house since it all started to kick off! Still a couple of days of high winds to come apparently so take care and stay safe :) x
Thank you so much for posting. I really wanted to go out to my local beach today where I knew that I could be safe, but there are a lot of tree lined lanes on the route there, so I decided to watch it on the webcams instead. Unsurprisingly they were almost all down. Your footage really captures the atmosphere and the power of the wind and waves. So glad you got home safely!

You are a mad pair for sure. Had a sneaky feeling you would be out chasing the storm! Unlike my poor husband who is currently getting home from London on 4 buses as no trains running down here in Kent. Every one of them cancelled. Think he'd rather be on a wind-torn cliff getting blown away than sitting on 4 London buses taking hours and hours and hours and....(you get the picture) trying to get home. At least you have blown the cobwebs away this morning for sure! x J x

Yikes!, hope you two were OK. The sea looked like a surging tsunami coming in ~ just shows the power of the elements at full force!
It is truly humbling and, despite all of our computer modelling and forecasting, we are mere matchsticks compared to nature! Sarah :)

Absolute terrible weather. You were both really brave to go out in it.
Chaos here in South Wales too. Lost fences this time but others so much worse off. My 35ft Sycamore tree came down in 2017. It was awful. Luckily nobody hurt but my neighbours house had part of my tree in his garden for a couple of days, until I got people in to remove it.
Another bad day of it forecast for tomorrow as well. Hate wind more than any other type of weather. Can be so deadly and destructive. Hope you got home safely. 🏡
It seems buildings and trees pose a huge risk in storms, and can be so devastating. Days of mizzle is my worst weather, getting wet even though its not properly raining! Luckily we had not damage at home, Sarah :)

Hi Sarah and Andrew. Love seeing the effect Cornwall had with this wind. Was it raining or was it the wind blowing the waves as they broke? Either way it was very dramatic and interesting.

OMG. I might have known our Intrepid walkers would be out storm chasing, it looks pretty wild and windy, rather frightening I would be worried about flying objects, I felt sorry for that poor seagull that was getting battered, Andrew couldn’t catch his breath long enough to recite any jokes either! I should go home now and have a cup of hot chocolate In front of a roaring fire 🔥 and thaw out, it’s certainly livened me up anyway! thank you 😊

@@CornishWalkingTrails Yes Sarah I was thinking about little brown dog at home by the fire, I think had he been out in that storm he would have become airborne, I was nearly blown off my feet in my conservatory, the wind found all the unsealed joints I didn’t even know I had! and it whistled a lovely tune as it passed through! 🤗

We get a lot of stormy weather here in Cornwall too, probably because we stick out into the Atlantic, Sarah :)

We generally have stormy weather in the winter, the weather systems come across the Atlantic and we are the first landfall, so maybe that's why. Also they have started naming storms and maybe that makes them more interesting, Sarah :)
