In this video we take a walk near Newquay starting from Trevarrian, a village on the busy Padstow to Newquay road. Our destination is the popular resort of Mawgan Porth, a couple of miles along the South West Coast path. It is a few hours before Storm Arwen will hit the UK and the winds build throughout the afternoon.
Reaching Mawgan Porth was challenging with strong, northerly winds beating us against the cliff. Once we arrived, the tide was out and we had a fantastic beach to explore. The northerly wind was whipping up the sand and creating ripples in the standing water on the beach. It was difficult to stand up, let alone talk to camera!
Our video takes a look at the development of Mawgan Porth, with a couple of older photographs for reference, and it is possible to track the changes over time. We also explore some local stories gathered by the WI, involving a skeleton, a shipwreck and crazy golf!
The standard description bit…
We are Sarah and Andrew and we film our walks around Cornwall and publish on RUclips, usually weekly. Sometimes we stay in accommodation in Cornwall and upload our vlog. Sarah is fascinated by sea glass and likes to collect it so there may be the occasional sea glass video too. The channel is a hobby and we both have normal day jobs!

Thank you both for another excellent video. My wife and I have some wonderful memories of our holidays in Cornwall over the years. Mawgan Porth is lovely, as are St Ives, Carbis Bay, Porthcurno, Lizard, Sennen Cove, St Mawes etc,. We have both enjoyed a few cream teas at the Porthmeor Beach cafe, and Minnack Theatre not to mention the Cheese and Onion pasties from the Prima bakeries near Redruth. Kelly's ice-cream and also the ice cream from Jus, Desserts in St Ives. 😋 Very nice. Sadly I am 68 yrs old now and my wife is also 60+. Our last visit was in 2019 Mid May always (quieter) then. We live in Scotland and it is over 500 mls, to Glorious Cornwall, a bit too far to drive now. You are both very blessed to live where you do. Please keep the videos coming. Take Care God Bless.
Ahhh! You are making me long for summer evenings and long days! Sarah :)
Mad you were the only ones out Thank you again for entertaining us house bound people. Take care.
Yes - mad!! Sarah :)
Doggy walking sideways in the wind was cute. He so loved the beach.🐕
So cute!! Sarah :)
You are both real troopers! We live in FL and we don't go out during named storms. :) We tried not to laugh, but Sarah being blown away was too funny. It was a good idea to cut the walk short. I am impressed at how well the microphones worked in those conditions. We also loved the cave segments.
Don't apologise - I was laughing while editing this one!! I think the storm was arriving ahead of the forecasters time! Bonkers! Sarah :)
Wow!!!!! Glad your dog didn't get blown away. Thank you for the great video.
Nearly!! Sarah :)
Taking A Good Brisk Walk With Sarah And Andrew Is A Perfect Way To Keep Yourself FIT, Not Only That, It Broadens The Mind, Educates And Entertains. Forget Going Down To The Gym, Everything Your Health Needs Is RIGHT HERE.
Cheers! Sarah :)
Loved puppy crab walking and digging holes on beach. He's so funny and I love him so. I think you made the right call cutting the walk short as it was getting dangerous.
He had a great time! Sarah :)
Actually love those windy coastal walks and gives you a great appetite and thirst for a nice meal in an old pub👍
Agreed! With a roaring fire to warm you up! Sarah :)
Thanks for the wonderful stormy video you did well. It is nice to see your viedeo over a cup of tea while having breakfast. Stay healthy, best regards Günter
A good way to watch! Sarah :)
Wow such a dramatic walk along this stunning area. Makes us miss Cornwall so much. ❤️👍🏻👍🏻. Thanks so much for sharing and taking us with you. 🙏🏻🚶🏻♂️🚶♀️.
Love a good wind storm, great scenery, beautiful sea colour. Poor you Sarah, you didn't look very happy in all that wind (LOL). Enjoyable video to watch.
I was glad to go home! Sarah :)
Wow, I love the Cornish coast on the stormy days. Gorgeous waves.🌊 Brilliant idea to stage a "Cave" talk session to teach us about this area.
Mad dogs and English men may go out in the midday sun but the Cornish brave the wind and mizzle. I remember once in Marazion seeing the horses in a raging sea and there was not a sound from it. Very eerie. Loved the video. Always entertaining. 👍
A raging sea at Marazion? Or have I missed the point here - lol! Sarah :)
@@CornishWalkingTrails it's true . It was wild but not a breath of wind. Very spooky. 👻
Enjoyed the cosy cave chats 😁👌. Wow, that was some wind and thought your gorgeous dog was going to blow away 💨🍃...not to mention yourselves 😉. Good day for blowing the cobwebs away. Really enjoyed watching again 👍😁💝😘
It was a great day! Sarah :)
NO walk unwalked,,, in all sorts of weather,,, well done,, love from OZ
Indeed! Sarah :)
That was a very brave walk in wild windy weather, how about ‘Stormy Weather’ for the background choice of music, plain and to the point, you always come up with some wonderful history of the places you visit like Mawgan Porth, the story of the wine barrels drifting ashore reminded me of ‘Poldark’s’ encounter with the sinking of Warleggans ‘Queen Charlotte’ on Hendrawna Beach, at one point the wind almost blew your canine cutie away, and I don’t think he thought the coastal path seemed like a good idea as he clearly wanted to go home, Andrew ever the optimist thought it would be ok.and of-cause he was right up to a point, but as you say Sarah you won’t forget that walk in a hurry, thank you both for a bracing breath of fresh air! 🤗👋
One for the memory banks! Sarah :)
Now that was entertainment ! Watching you trying to stand up reminded me of some of our many visits to Mawgan Porth. We had a few days like that, sideways dogs and all !! Great stuff .
Did you get any snow ?? We had a good 6/7 inches of it up here in Lichfield.
I went up Cannock chase and it was amazing watching the deers and especially the stags.
Great video both of you 👍🥟👍🥟👍
Ahhh! Thank you! No snow for us - too much salt in the air!! Sarah :)
Well done Sarah and Andrew with coping with the windy conditions brave on you both very good video to share enjoy them as always cait wait for the next video take care both Helen and family in Huntingdon shire Farcet
You're welcome! Sarah :)
I really enjoyed this video. I used to live at St. Eval and as kids (late 70's early 80's)we would often cycle down to Mawgan Porth for a day at the beach. This brought back many happy memories. Thank you. I love your videos and always look forward to new ones. 😀❤❤☠
Well done for coping with the wind noise. I can't imagine it's easy making good videos in those conditions. It was very enjoyable and your efforts are much appreciated.
Thank you! Wind noise has always been a challenge - one we are very aware of! Sarah :)
Enjoyed this video very much - like I always enjoy your walks !!!
Fun and informations = 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
(I am so happy you didn't fly away 🌬🌬🌬)
Thank you! Amazing walk!
Our pleasure! Sarah :)
Oh, how I love a walk in a windstorm, especially by the sea! So much fun to watch this adventure, though I felt for your poor puppy with cold, wet feet. It's such a treat when you provide photos of the places you visit from different times in history. I kept thinking of Poldark, with the smuggler's boats coming into Nampara Cove in a storm. While it's also fictionalized, the TV series The Last Kingdom (based on books by Bernard Cornwell) provides a glimpse into the history of Alfred the Great, his son Edward, and his son-in-law, AEthelred, Lord of Mercia. In that version, AEthelred and his army were in the wrong place when the Danes attacked, and showed up after the battle was over. Cheers to you both. Hope you warmed up with a good pot of tea.
Oooo! Now that is very interesting, we must look it up! Sarah :)
‘You gotta laugh’ love it sitting in my arm chair
Lucky you! Sarah :)
Well that was a walk on the wild sideAn area I know well and hope to visit in April.
Wonderful rough seas , hope you got back safely.
Cheers! Sarah :)
What a hard time, well done, there will be many more opportunities to finish it under better weather
We are looking forward to it! Sarah :)
That was a rough one! Poor puppy was being blown sideways 😂. Glad you cut it short. I’ve watched a few videos on Arwen.
Storm Arwen certainly left an impression! Sarah :)
@@CornishWalkingTrails Did storm Barra come your way?
A very brave walk in that weather. Lovely sea.
Yes it was! Sarah :)
That was a windy walk 😳😊 Thank you for making this video in spite of the struggle. Your dog was almost wept off his feet on the beach and you Sarah, on the cliff. I am glad you called it a day. But apart from the wind - you had a lot of interesting facts. I will watch it again and learn it better. I once stayed overnight in Mawgan Porth in a B&B run by the lovliest elderly lady. I had no idea the place was so "young" and uninhabited less than 90 years ago. Thank you 👍🏻🥰
Hi Torunn, I love finding out about the history of a place and we were amazed at the speed of the development, from nothing to what it is today in 90 years (exempting the war years!) Sarah :)
Well, that was exhilarating to say the very least! I had to giggle at you and Mr. Scrumptious (the doggy!) trying to stay upwards and failing spectacularly! Done a few of those sort of walks myself & was glad to get home! Do go back and have a look at the fort at some point. Loved the old pictures of the area. Well done! x J x
Exhilarating is the perfect word! Sarah :)
Looked a fantastic walk and lots of history thanks for all the info.A lovely beach and cool caves , captain caveman that made me chuckle.Great share 🙂👍
Ahh, Love you three. Thanks for all the Great walks and entertainment you share with us. Lots of Love xxx
Well Done! Well Done! It was invigorating for you to say the least! The Sea was looking fabulous and the colours...... They were spectacular and "Boy"..... he did so well.
Thank you Sarah and Andrew💕
Glad you enjoyed it! Sarah :)
Although HAYLE is my go to holiday destination, in 2017 I did stay in Mawgan Porth. Your windy walk, in part is where I walked. Never again. Gale force winds and hardly any track. Going up - past "the shops" (I think there was a gate and you went up besides someone's house) was deceptive as soon you were very high up and the path very narrow! Despite this I sat down with my packed lunch but getting back was difficult as my rain mac kept filling with wind! I was scared & gripped onto the grass and came down most of the way on my bum! It's cool though that you've both walked on some of the same areas as me!
What an adventure and a tale to tell too! Sarah :)
We drove back home from Cornwall in that Gale, tree down in Truro, large detour and wandering all over the road when the wind hit the car, as you said wont be forgotten for some time.
It's very dangerous to drive in those conditions, don't you know?
I'm glad you made it home safely in those conditions! Sarah :)
Very nice video once again! Thank you :)
wow that brings back some great times i used to have in mawgan back in the 60s and 70s.we used to stay at trevarrian on the farm (then owned by the lobb family)what lovely people.quite sad how the area has now built up,beacon cove was allways known to us as bens cove(dont know if that was a local thing or not).to think when i was knee high to a grasshopper(now 60) i used to stand and play in those caves its kind of weird, not been back there since 1978,i must return.well done on a great vid.
Just watched your latest video and I must say how brave you were to take it on, well done Sarah and Andrew. Nevertheless l found it very informative and interesting. Again thank you for sharing that with us.Stay safe.👍👍👍
You're welcome! Sarah :)
So glad that you chose the safe option. Watch out though, don't rely on Google maps it will take you over the edge of the cliffs. Did you stop at the Travellers Rest? We always enjoy your pub visits. Brings back memories of Cornwall and Devon!
Pete & Liz , Bay of Plenty, New Zealand
We didnt visit the pub but there is always next time!! Sarah :)
Love your videos and information on lovely Cornwall ,thank you .
You guys are so funny I love watching your videos ❤️ well be visiting in may a few nights in perranporth and a few nights in Looe hoping to find some nice walks around the areas xx
I live near Looe and there are some lovely walks around.
@@cynthiastogden7000 that's good to know 🙂❤️ I've only been there once before but it made a lasting impression. Once I've finished college I'm hoping to move to Cornwall it's my favourite place 🙂❤️ x
Have fun! Sarah :)
Brrrrrrr I feel cold watching lol last time I was in Mawgan Porth I was pregnant with my son, he is now 41 lol lovely history xx
So you must spot the changes! Sarah :)
Yes I did, there were far less buildings then, we stayed in a little B&B bungalow, I was looking for it but it has changed so much, hope you got some good footage of storm Barra 😃😃😃
Fantastic video, Sarah and Andrew. Your doggie always looks so happy whatever the weather! There are some great walks in that book.
I think we have all of the walk books and a splattering of the mining history ones too! They are getting harder to come by! Sarah :)
@@CornishWalkingTrails The Exploring Cornish Mines books are great, cos they combine a usually attractive walk with fascinating mine ruins. They can be a bit anoracky in places, going into details about cylinder sizes and engine types, but they are walks which are well worth doing.
Hi both lovely windy walk wish we were with you
Ahhh! it nearly blew us off our feet!! Sarah :)
oh wish I was there!
Hi Sarah and Andrew. Loved your winter windy walk along the coast. Really enjoyed the drama of the sea with the waves.
The sea looks amazing with a swell! Sarah :)
that is some wind
Sure was! Sarah :)
Done the walk many times remember so stay clear of the edge, Dont want to have to cal the Emergency services As many are Volanteers And you dont Want to put them at risk.As you say blows cobwebs away,You dont want to be blown off the edge
Ello!🙋♀️
Storm barra is on its way guys that was funny
Did you notice at .30 how the map is shaped like a dog?!? 🤗😃
Glad you guys were sensible calling the walk off before it got silly. There's too many people taking risks at mo on you tube for the sake of a few likes.
The walk will be there another day 😂😂😂😂
We are too old now! Know our limits!!! LOL! Sarah :)
have you ever considered a t shirt of good quality with cornish walking trails on it ... i would wear this with pride when visiting Cornwall
Half a walk, a wise move. I have out a link on the Trewan Hall camp site FB page.
Cheers! Thank you! Sarah :)
With the approach of storm Barra, if it becomes a really ( Wheely ) bad storm, will it be a Wheelbarra storm. Just in case " Wheelbarrow storm.
Very funny!! Sarah :)
'SICK"
LOL! Sarah :)
My Jack Russell Terrier is named : FAXXON. This is an ancient ANGLO SAXXON word for FOX!
Clever - I like that! Sarah :)
In 50 years time the native Cornish will be dead and gone.
Their descendants will be around and thriving, surely?
Very possibly priced out!! Sarah :)
@@mikeoglen6848 Most have to move away. Or they marry Anglos.
@@monkeyon777 Omg you don't mean Anglo-Saxons, do you?
