    I read where a RUclipsr said to take a small hammer and tap the switch...lightly.
    BINGO...IT WORKED.
    Thank you very much for your info...glad it was a simple fix.
    DREADED THE THOUGHT OF TAKING HER TO THE STEALERSHIP!!

      I just did the same thing on mine: light taps on both switch housings with a small hammer. I also noticed the vacuum hose on the transfer case was cracked so I trimmed it back and reinstalled it as well.
      I think I'll make sure I go in and out of 4WD once a month to keep it from seizing up again (hopefully).

    Super helpful video!! Mine (just got it 3 days ago!) was stuck in 4x4, the front switch on the transfer case actuator was bad. I took it out and it had no continuity with plunger in or out.
    To confirm, I turned the key on (motor off) and all 4 wheels were green, with a blinking orange center. So I pressed the 4x4 button, and all 4 green wheels lights turned off, but the orange center light was still blinking (this was the main symptom).
    So then I unplugged the bad sensor, and used an unpainted metal paperclip bent into a "U" as a jumper, plugged it into the bad sensor's plug, (again, key on, motor off, green wheel lights off) and everything clicked and disengaged! Woo hoo!!! So relieved!!
    Just need to replace the sensor now, but thanks for the great video!! Wouldn't have tried this without your explanation!

      So awesome. you're describing my exact problem- were you ever able to replace the switches, and if so, where did you get them?

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101 6 лет назад

      Yep, got it switched out. Still have a problem up front, 4X4 won't engage fully and honestly haven't had a chance to climb under and smack it. It's new to me, and the previous owner never exercised it. Oddly, the bad switch worked again after having it out and pushing on it a lot, but I wouldn't comfortably rely on it. If you're in a pinch, take the switch out and push the plunger in and out, and see if you get any continuity from the switch.
      I replaced the bad switch with this: Toyota 84210-52050 Back Up Lamp Switch from Amazon. Worked like a charm, not stuck in 4x4 anymore and we've been driving around ever since. I just need to get the front dif resolved. I'm sure it will be easy, I just need to get after it.

    Man you saved me a grand++ I'm sure. I found 2 (yes two) faulty plunger switches that I didn't even know about. One was 200-300 ohms, the other was wide open. That cost me $275 at the dealer. My back diff lock was ok after pulling it out and cleaning it but the front (ADD) 2x 4x shifter was afu. I finally got it working and now everything is DNO. Just tapping on the front ADD got it to cycle. I know how everything works now and exercised it multiple times in some deep snow on the mountain yesterday. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.

    Thanks for this video. I was able to determine an issue with my ADD as I was unable to manually rotate it but I was able to manually rotate the transfer case back to 2 high. I had read in my owners manual when I got my 2003 sequoia in 2016 and had ran the 4wd monthly. In fact that's how I found out this problem. I wish the ADD was a bit more accessible. Thanks again for the information!

    EXCELLENT Video!!! It really helped me understand the Toyota 4WD system, and components, and how to TS my Sequoia's problem. Just about everything that COULD be wrong, was wrong, including both transfer case switches. THANKS for making this!!

  • @infinitevoodoo
    @infinitevoodoo 4 года назад +4

    Thanks for the excellent video--your instructions on how to manually rotate the two actuators through their various positions is extremely helpful. I am working on a 2001 Sequoia. I was able to cycle both the transfer case and the ADD through all of their positions manually. I did not note any hesitation in the operation of the motors. Several times I tried rotating both actuators to the 2wd/free positions and starting the vehicle. The flashing orange diff light disappears until I attempt to engage 4wd with the button, after which I hear an engagement noise. However, the flashing orange diff light will now come on and stay on until I manually rotate the transfer case from 4wd-Locked back to 2wd. The ADD appears to stay in the free position. I have checked both transfer case position switches and replaced the front one, which looked like it was not achieving full continuity, with no result.
    I have read that the wheel speed sensors provide information to the 4wd ECU. A couple of months ago, I experienced the issue common to these trucks where the ABS/traction control system randomly locks up one wheel at speed, so I tore out the ABS fuse. The 4wd system has been non-operational since long before the ABS issue became serious. Is it possible that these two issues are interrelated, and that my manual cycling of the actuators and replacement of the position switch are not fixing the problem because of a sensor elsewhere in the system? I suppose I could check the L4 and Neutral switches. Is there a test procedure for those? Or is it only the vehicle speed sensor that has input to the 4wd ECU? I suppose it's possible that my ECU is bad.
    Is there anything else to check before I dive into the 4wd ECU?
    Thanks.

    I had this exact same issue. My 03 sequoia got stuck in 4WD locked diff. Center diff light flashing. I tested both transfer case postion switches and found the front one to be bad. After replacing it I disconnected the battery for about 15 minutes and then reconnected it. I started it and the blinking light went away. I would start with the position switches if you’re having similar issues. The part was $61 with tax.

    Great video. Saved me a lot of time of having to go through it myself. All said and done, my ADD motor was toast on my 2003 Sequoia. In my case, the actuator breathing tube had snap off. I had never realized it had a breather until now. Years of corrosion from road salt and a few flooded streets, did the motor in. $470 after taxes in the Chicago area. I could have bought one a lot cheaper online but this issue was discovered less than a day before a trip to CO.

    A real good video for sure. We have a Tacoma 2001 that is a huge headache. With the 2 front wheels off the ground, pushing the 2-4 selector does absolutely nothing...no light, no 4x4 engagement. You can spin front driveshaft and if you turn a wheel by hand only one wheel spins. If I disconnect the ADD connector at actuator and then push the 2-4 selector button you hear the transfer case motor spin and the front driveshaft locks. In addition, both front wheels now spin (opposite directions). What the heck is up with that? lol

    Great video. I have flashing light w/4 green tires every time i start my 03 sequoia. I can push the 4wd button and the green tires go away but light still flashes. I had to replace one of the position switches at the transfer case actuator. Didn't fix the issue. So I want to spin the actuator manually just a little confused with the pin orientation and I don't want to damage the transfer case actuator. I don't hear either actuator spin and it won't engage 4x4H but I can get it to go into 4x4L .

      So I got the pin configuration figured out now. I have continuity at pins 4&6. So thats High 4 lock. So connected my wires like in the video and got the actuator to spin from 4HLock to H4 so I turned the key to on position and I heard the actuator spin the orange light and the 4 green never left. I checked the continuity and is was back to 4H lock so I wired it to spin to 2wd and it did spin and once again when I turned the key to on position actuator spinned right back to 4H lock again. Can the front add be causing this? I previously have stated it does ingage into 4x4L but not 4x4H.

    Question, I'm in an 03 Sequoia am I looking at an expensive fix or what? My center differential light flashes. I have never been off-road. I took it to toyota they actual road tested it with me in it. The codes that were listed are C1203,C1223, C1247, C1360, I called a private 4x4 toyota specialist and he said to check the plugs in the actuator. So if its just faulty plugs is it expensive? Should l get rid of the car? Thanks for the camera work, THAT WAS HUGE I got under there and saw everything.

      Seems like the switches are the easiest to start testing. My problem on my '04 is the center diff and it's intermittent, so I have some work ahead of me. Once I got mine unstuck once before, it's worked fine ( did this by tapping on it). After driving a couple thousand miles, it stuck again when I engaged it and won't respond, just blinking on the dash.

    Help! Does the vehicle need to be fully in the air to do this? Mine is currently on the ground. Tcase actuator is good by bench testing it and confirming the motor spins both ways and both tcase switches referenced have continuity. I'm 90% sure the issue is the ADD. I'm flashing, and vehicle acts like 3/4 wheels are locked, or maybe all 4. Can I do the manual rotation of the front diff as described here on the ground, or does it need to be in the air and in gear or neutral?
    Thanks!

      I don't know for sure, that is for the vehicle skid control. I think it probably does the same thing because when I push mine a light on the dash comes on that says "vsc off". You could check by getting it into 4wd, park it, then press that button and listen, if you hear the transfer case actuator motor run then I would say it is the same thing because it is shifting the transfer case into the locked position. but that's just a guess? sorry I can't help more for sure on this.

      smashsackett having trouble with the transfer case motor am going to use much of your information to get it out of 4wd the front motor works after I reset by disconnecting battery terminal for a few hours I still have to check the switches and may get gutsy and pull the transfer case motor. Brad Goodrich so the jumpers and battery work perfectly (once i got my pins numbered correctly) tested the two switches on the transfer case motor the appear to be ok tho i get different readings on each one they cut off the current when not engaged. Now when i plug in the two plugs the front goes back into 4wd. for now I have the plugs undone and taped the ends and sockets any idea what would cause the front motor to engage when vehicle is started?

    • @scottsackett7411
      @scottsackett7411 10 лет назад

      Brad Goodrich So if I understand you correctly you can get the transfer case motor to run using the battery and jumpers, if so this is good. Also you need to verify the readings of the actuator at each position. 4H, 4L, and 2wd. using the continuity tester, and same for the front actuator, in free and lock position.
      What happens when you push your 4wd button?
      Is the diff lock light currently flashing?

    For my 2003 Sequoia, the only way I can get INTO 4WD is to shift into N and use the lever that switches between 4L/4H. I leave it in 4H in general. I shift into N and then put the lever into 4L and then shift into 4H and that gets me into 4WD. I use the button to DE-activate 4WD, but it WILL NOT WORK to get me INTO 4WD. I hope this helps someone!
    I replaced a bad plunger switch. I also replaced my rear actuator because it was badly corroded.
    I was still unable to get into 4WD and I was looking at the front actuator. I took it off and was looking at it. It appeared to be in like-new condition, no corrosion or anything. I opened the motor portion and it fell apart and I couldn't get it back together, so I bought a new one from China.

    I got a diagnostic on my sequoia and the dealer said it had low ohms. Something like 0.001 ohms when it needs 0.5 ohms. What should i do.

    When I took the cap off the gear came out how do I align it to the right position on the transfer case actuator ? So the motor spins it to the right position

      +Dylan i This is tricky! I probably will not be able to explain it very well but essentially using the diagram that I made in the video starting at about 12:20 you can get that gear put back on the correct tooth. When you rotate that gear you will be driving a rod in the transfer case from front to back. you will need to grab the gear and manually spin it all the way from one direction to the other, clockwise and counter-clockwise. I can't remember which way does which but all the way in one direction will put you in H4wd and all the way in the other direction will put you in 2wd. so pick one of these directions, spin it all the way (you may need to rotate your front driveline a little so the gears in the transfer case will mesh) once you have it completely rotated ( I would use the 2wd direction) then using the diagram on that yellow piece of paper in the video, just make sure that when the cap is screwed back on the fingers on the back of the gear will line up where they are supposed to be, use the bolt holes to orient the fingers. You will need to pull the gear out and reinsert it on different teeth in order to get it to the proper rotational orientation. Sorry I diddn't make a video of this but once I got mine back in and the cap siliconed back on I didn't want to disassemble it again, now I have since totaled that sequoia and got an 05, and the 05 uses a completely different setup.
      hope this helps

    If you hate yourself and think that you need to be punished, then by all means make your own cables to connect to the 6 pins of the 2 actuators. Otherwise, just buy some alligator clips. My self-made leads fell off time after time wasting so much time and money on this project. "Why isn't this moving the motor!?" Well, because the connectors fell off of the pins. Or they detached from the end-connector, etc.

      There can be a number of issues preventing proper function of your 4WD and he does a pretty good job running through most of the common issues and how to effectively troubleshoot.

    2003 sequia Avoid all this , first put it in 4x4 while moving forward for about 20 to 30 ft if it doesn't go into 4x4 then while rolling forward put it in neutral, then repeat backwards to go back to high two wheel drive , thats how I do it evertime
    just to save on the where and tear anyway .

      This didn't work for me. I do agree that doing this when the system is working would help reduce wear and tear though (good best practice).
      What did work was light taps on both switch housings with a small hammer. I also noticed the vacuum hose on the transfer case was cracked so I trimmed it back and reinstalled it as well.
      I think I'll make sure I also go in and out of 4WD once a month to keep it from seizing up again (hopefully).
