Servicing a car radiator fan motor

  • How do you service a car radiator fan motor? This motor was scrapped as 'not working', likely because the brushes were somehow stuck, away from the rotor.
Do not hit your motor with a hammer, you'll probably break the magnets like I did. Also be very gentle if it's an aged motor, the PCB substrate holding the brushes can be very brittle.
I was able to release the stuck brushes by adding oil to the spring and use a small screwdriver to poke on the carbon component until it came loose. I guess you could potentially replace the brushes all together.
I added oil to the bearing to make it spin smoother. Opening the motor up and releasing the stuck carbon brush did get it spinning but in the process of shooting this video I managed to cause enough damage to make it broken again.

Pro tip... don't hit your motor with a hammer. You can push the brushes back and then insert a wire at the side of the brush holder to keep them in place. This will make it much easier to insert the rotor.

Thanks for the video. We are getting a Bronco back on the road that has been sitting for 23 years. It only had 3k miles on all the parts when they parked it- so we are going to try this on the fan.

The ridge on the worn commutator broke those brush holders. You have to remove the rotor carefully otherwise you cause more harm as we just saw.

As far as I know, this is the most updated list: Bacolod, Iloilo , Cagayan De Oro, Metro Cebu, Metro Manila, Laguna, Bulacan, Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Pangasinan, Benguet, Rizal, Cavite, Davao. But even inside those areas, I imagine some places will get better signal than others. You might want to go to your local mall and try it in person before buying, to make sure you can get a signal in your area.

Sooo this video was pretty much pointless as you didn't even fix the motor and the actual steps you did show were not proper procedure because you said you wouldn't recommend doing it this way.
