    Thanks, Jim your video and replies were very helpful. I've got a 1999 Civic. I noticed the temp gauge climbing today (1st hot day since I replaced the timing belt 7 water pump. I read your replies to Jjay Troche. The fan runs when jumpered. I checked the fuse. I opened radiator cap, turned on heat and ran car for about 10 minutes. The fan never kicked on. I'll be ordering thermostat(for the fan - Honda PN: 37760-P00-004). Thanks again.

    Hey Jim, I did the following troubleshoot and with a wire shorting the coolant sensor, the fan came on. So that indicates that it's either the temperature sensor or the thermostat to me...does that sound right to you?
    As an aside, I now can't get the wiring clip to slide back on to the sensor. Do you know what would cause that? Did I bend the prongs in the clip when I put the test wire in? Any advice appreciated. Thanks!

      I am not sure. If you find all the same connectors, it should work. I would call your parts guy at the Honda dealer, and ask him how many coolant sensors your engine has, and what they go to. If it is 3, then it should be the same. Here is another video that talks about the 3 sensors the Civic engines from 96 to 2000 use:

    I just bought a 1994 Delsol and my radiator fan comes on right when I turn on ignition and or stays on when the car starts. So basically it's always on and does not work properly as per temperature. I asked previous owner if they bypass the fan but they said no. I disconnected the tempt switch and the fan still come on or stay on when car is on. It's not allowing my car to get to normal operating temperature so I guess I am failing smog test. The top radiator hose is HOT while the bottom stays cool, which is not normal. What you think might be the issue? I replaced the thermostat already.

    • @tubejim101
      @tubejim101  4 года назад

      Check the battery, the alternator. You could also have a pocket of air in the cooling system. If they did not maintain the coolant, it may have eat up the water pump.

    Can I leave my jumper wire plugged in and leave it that way so that it's always running? I'd like to leave it that way so I never have to worry about it not turning on Is it safe or no ?

    • @tubejim101
      @tubejim101  7 лет назад

      You can do that. Honda designed it with the switch, so your engine can
      come up to operating temperature quickly. By just turn the fan on from
      the start, it will take longer for your engine to warm up to operating
      temperature. Pretty sure this will also make your gas mileage go down.

      If the paper clip works the fan, then it is the thermal switch. Most likely you have an air pocket in your coolant. You can test your switch: ruclips.net/video/Lcx_TlOKkFU/видео.html

      tubejim101 Air in my coolant? Elaborate on that one for me please lol Are you referring to a possible head gasket problem when you say that?

    • @tubejim101
      @tubejim101  7 лет назад +1

      Hondas are known for getting a pocket of air in the cooling system. You have to "burp" them, to get air out of the lines. Will find a link to a video. A thermostat not working when it should, can cause your coolant temp to do strange things too. As for the fan not coming on. If you short the connector as in the video, and the fan does not come on, it is either your wiring (not likely) or your relay (most likely). Or the fan, but you tested that good with battery voltage. So you have two problems. Temp acting funny (thermostat or air), and fan not coming on (relay bad). Hope that helps.

It is a bit tricky, but if you can figure out the relay pin out, you can pull the relay, and should be able to jump, or supply voltage to the fan, where the relay would.

    I have a 99 Civic LX car was running great till a while ago car started to over heat and i noticed the radiator fan wasn’t kicking on. I check the fuses and relays swapped them around and nothing fan wasn’t kicking on. I did the paper clip test boom fan kicked on so i Replaced the thermostat and the Fan Switch. Immediately i saw when it got to operating temperatures the fan would kick on for about 30s then turn off for about 2-3mins then kick back on for another 30s I found that odd even when engine was starting to over heat the fan would not stay on constant. I've replaced the switch and the relay and fan and it still doesn't turn on. The Fan comes on if i jumper wire that connector but I've put 2 switches on it and it still isn't coming on.

      Yea I was wondering the same thing.. I have two fans, and I thought one of them was spinning, but now it’s not.. but after reading, it sounds like it only kicks in when the engine is hot enough to need the fan.. is this correct?

    Ive been looking for this vid the past 3 yrs jaja so Im having this problem of my fan not kicking on the strange thing is when I jump it as you did, it kicks right on.. But my switch and thermostat is brand new? so??? did they sell me a bad switch? new thermostat new switch, new relay yet the only way I can get the fan to kick on is when I jump it, its driving me nuts jaja sorry D15b 91 civic

      If you jumper it, and the fan comes on, that means the coolant temp switch is bad, or you have an air pocket in the coolant.

    I've replaced the switch, was told the thermostat was replaced. And I've done the paper clip method and the fan turns on. What could be making the fan not work normally?

      If the paper clip works, and switch tests good, then you most likely have an air pocket in your coolant.

      If your fan comes on when you put a wire in it, but does not come on when the engine is hot, it is most likely that coolant switch that is bad.
