How to Cut Down Plywood Sheets--Using a Circular Saw

  • I've had a lot of questions lately on how I cut down plywood sheets for furniture and cabinet building. It's actually a really easy task if you have the right tools.
    I use a circular saw to quickly and easily cut down my plywood sheets. And I combine the circular saw with a Kreg Rip Cut to rip my sheets to the correct width and a Kreg Accu-Cut to cross cut my plywood to the correct lengths.
    In this video, I explain how I use these guides and a couple FAQ about the process.
    You can also find a step by step written tutorial here:

    In this video, I'm using the following tools:

    I noticed you are missing the stop block that should be in place on the baseplate to accurately reset the saw location if it's removed. I remove mine all the time & never had an issue with it's repeated accuracy. I have both guides & love them. I use mine to rough cut sheet goods so they are easier to handle & cut to final size on the table saw.

    Excellent explation and demonstration! The Menards near me has fairly decent plywood compared to some of the other nearby box stores. Unfortunately, they don't have a panel saw, and I don't have a truck, which means breaking sheet goods down myself before I head home is a must. The Rip-Cut on my 20v circular saw is part of my parking lot lumber breakdown kit. The saw paired with a clamping edge guide and some rigid foam insulation (for backing the cut) makes it easy to get the sheet cut either to final dimensions or into oversize primals that I can finish up at home. The Accu-Cut could replace the edge guide in my kit, but I have a track saw at home and the added cost just isn't worth it for me. Still, not a bad option if you already have a dedicated Kreg sled saw.

    Have you seen the Build Your Own Track Saw videos where they essentially take leftover sheet goods and make a custom circular saw guide with them? Seems like it would work just as good as the Kreg guides and also account for the kerf of the blade too. This Old House has a video up where they do the same thing as well.

    Looks like you're using the older version of the Ripcut (there's no finger hole on the guide), but on some other videos I see you also have the newer Ripcut guide. Are they any different (other than the physical appearance)? I have the old one and I never could make the sled stay solidly on the saw plate. I have Dewalt 7.5. and the saw plate on this circsaw isn't flat/smooth. It has ridges molded at the top of the plate so the sled screws don't have flat surface to grab. If I tighten the sled screws, the back of the sled separates from the plate, making it hard to make a clean and straight cut at the beginning. Frustrating. But I guess it's the saw's fault not the guide and the guide was a gift so I didn't lose money.

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  3 года назад +1

      I suggest putting the saw and sled on the accucut and adjusting the alignment tab on the sled so it’s even with the edge of the accucut. Then you just align that red mark on the rip cut ruler and it’s already set up even with the blade

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  2 года назад

      The rip cut cuts a line parallel to an edge. It assumes the factory edge (like on plywood) is straight. That’s why its main purpose is for use on plywood…which comes with (for the most part) straight edges.

    I've been noticing a few issues with my cuts. First, My rip cuts on the jig always ends up not being squared. There's a slight angle in the cuts --even after I align my blade. Second, I keep messing up the last inch of my cut when the saw finished the cut. When tye sled goes off the wood, the saw veres towards me and leds to a curve at the end towards me. Any advice?

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  4 года назад

      When you start and stop your cuts, you have to be very careful to keep the edge guide flat and square to the plywood. Because the ends only allow for a small section of the edge guide to be on the plywood, it is a little challenging, but you have to pay careful attention to keep it as flat as possible to the edge. I usually have that problem more with the start than the end of the cut.

    7:56 I think the Accu-cut has to be on the stable side of the plywood, not the falling part...🤔

      @WoodshopDiaries  3 года назад +2

      I use both it on both the waste and the good side of the line. As long as you know what you’re doing and which side you’re cutting on, you can cut directly on the line, a blade width off the line, or just flip it around to cut the other direction.

    With the sizes of the accu-cut and rip cut are there any sizes of cuts on plywood you can not do?

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  3 года назад

      Nope not really. The rip cut goes to 24” so if I needed 36”, I just rip 12” off with the rip cut to leave me 36” on the other side.

    if i leave it on can i change the widths back and forth 6" to 8" is all i need i already bought it just gotta set it up on the saw

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  4 года назад

      You can cut any width between about 2”-24” on the rip cut. So you can set it to cut 6” and 8”

    Do you sand the plywood pieces before assembly?

      I always sand everything before assembly 👍 I talk about why here:

    Was that birch plywood? Have issues with chip out when I cut it.

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  4 года назад

      Yes it’s birch. It could be that your blade is dull or you need a finer tooth blade or it could be the quality of the plywood you’re using. I don’t have issues with chipping on rips, but have occasional small chipping on cross cuts. That’s when I know I need a fresh blade

    Sacrificial scrap blocks? I'm just glad there was no sacrificial dog on a leash. Grain sacrifice, blood sacrifice, or a sacrifice of thanksgiving. We'll just go with the grain sacrifice today, thank you very much.
